Rock it: Best Tips for Getting Back to School

August 26, 2018 By Autumn Rose Reo 7 Comments

Got back to school under your belt? Now’s the time to get the rest of your school year rollin’ with these tips for getting back to school!

Affiliate links may be included.

Back to school.

That time of the year when you’re just about to start enjoying the summer time and then you look at the calendar and see that “Meet the Teacher” is next week.

Back=to=School-JCP

That time of the year when you’re out to scavenge through all your kids clothes to see how many more days you can make that one pair of shoes work before your kid’s toe actually peeks out.

That time of the year when you have to all have to get back in a routine of the morning marathon to get to school before the first bell rings.

So we’ve put together the Best Tips for Getting Back to School to help you make the rest of the year rock and roll!

You Go First

This may seem to contradict everything, but before you the fire drill started, make time for you! Yes, get yourself up, get dressed, get your coffee and then press go. If you are hitting the floor feeling like you’ve already lost the game, you will. Start off the day ready to take it on full steam and the rest of the family will take that on, too.

coffee

Make Time for Meals

Don’t skip breakfast!

Without a little healthy fuel to get things going, you’re setting up their day (and yours) for full-on suckage. So make sure they get something in their belly – even if it’s eaten in the car or walking to class.

Here are several of our go-to recipe favorites for back to school breakfast.

  • Use your slow cooker to create breakfast the night before. Oatmeal, egg casseroles, and even french toast are A-MAZING in the slow cooker. (Actually, the slow cooker is a super friend for every meal!)
  • Use Sundays to make your breakfasts and then freeze them for the whole week including pancakes, muffins, and even donuts!
  • For those even harder mornings, have a few items around that are you’re go-tos. Go for easy items that you can grab and go or even leave in your car (great for snack times later.)
    • Jimmy Dean Egg Scramblers make morning meal time easy – all the ingredients are together, so you just cook and go.
    • GoGo SqueeZ applesauce and yogurtZ that don’t have to be refrigerated, so you can keep them in your purse for those last-minute surprises so you always have something healthy handy.

Added Nutrition: Banana Bread made with yogurt or applesauce (Check out this Banana Bread recipe)

Plan for lunches and snacks in advance!

Don’t ever wait until the last minute to fill up the lunch box.

  • I have the kids immediately after school make/ their meal for tomorrow so we don’t forget for the next day.  When you’re done, I check it to ensure a healthy lunch box.
  • When it comes to snacks after school, have healthy ones stocked up so the kids make good choices. Preparing healthy snack stations in the fridge, in the pantry, or even your car will help keep the kids sustained until dinner. (A lunch/snack station is a handy way to put it all together and teach them how to do it – with a little guidance!)

Prep and Plan

Prep the Wardrobe

  • Start off the week by setting out clothing or working with your child to pick outfits for the whole week. Place them in an organizer like this to make it easy to pull out each day. They not only learn responsibility, but also team work with you. Plus it will save you so much wasted time during the week with “what do I wear mom?”

Closet Organizer

  • Since kids need to change sizes almost every three months, what’s the need to stock up the closet more than one season in advance. Buy what they need for that time and alternate. Also, save lots of dollars by sharing with other families who have kids only a year older than them to pass on their clothes with they outgrow them and always make use of consignment events like Just Between Friends Fort Worth.

Plan your work, work your plan

I cannot recommend to you more the importance of a good planner to organize your family’s schedule. Whether it’s paper or electronic, having a planner that works for mom and the rest of the family is crucial. This also includes organizing all the important info you need in one place like a family binder to keep your information at the tip of the finger.

  • I like online organization including Google Calendars (I have 12) plus always having a notepad handy when I need to make notes and keep thoughts organized.
  • For the paper people, there are so many options available. This planner has people buying it left and right! And planning doesn’t just mean putting in the appointments. You’ll want to meal plan, I suggest this Meal Planner from Carrie Elle with perforated lists, meal plans and much more!

Get it Together

Homework It

Homework isn’t fun for anyone, so streamline the fights and keep it focused with a Homework Station. This will make this less-than-fun activity easier for all of you. Outline expectations, have an area set up with pens, paper, sharpener, light, and with no distractions. If the kids have to be on the computer, make sure there’s no way to have them get on other activities like YouTube or another social media. And remember, if they’re old enough, take away the phone.

Then here’s the biggie: sign what you need to, check the homework, and then pack up the backpack for in the morning. This way all you have to do is grab and go!

Time it Out

Setting up a routine and assignment chores isn’t just for you – it will make it easier for them know when and what things are going to happen. Using this template, you can set up the rules and stick to them for bedtimes, wake up times, and chores!

Click here to download your customizable template.

However, the two biggest things you need to remember to really be a rockstar parent:

  1. Say no – there’s no need to try to do everything, everywhere and all the time!
  2. Sundays are your friends for making the other 6 days rock and roll!

Top 10 Free Things to Do in DFW

July 21, 2018 By Autumn Rose Reo Leave a Comment

Whether you’re watching your budget or just tired of watching the TV, you don’t have to look long or hard for things to in North Texas. Here are some of our favorite Top 10 Free Things to Do in DFW.

Trying to keep kids programmed all summer – isn’t just time consuming, but it can get expensive too. However, in the DFW Metroplex, there are so many things to do AND many things you can do for FREE. (Yep, one of my favorite words.)

So the next time the kids say I’m bored (or maybe it’s just you looking for something new to do with your weekend) or you’re just looking to change it up a little bit, here’s a good place to get moving this summer (and many of these are open throughout the year.)

Top 10 Free Things to Do in DFW

Kids Bowl Free – DFW

I’m all about getting the kids moving especially in the summer. With Kids Bowl Free – kids can get 2 free games of bowling all summer of the program from bowling centers across the country and many of them in DFW. All you have to do is get registered for free and they’ll send your tickets on Sundays for the whole week!

KidsBowlFreeAfterShow from Darin Spindler on Vimeo.

DFW Airport Founder’s Plaza – Grapevine

When we went, there weren’t just families there, we found adults of all ages waiting to see the planes take off and come in from a great vantage point. Dedicated to the founders of DFW Airport in 1995, the plaza provides convenient parking, picnic tables, telescopes, historic information, a commemorative monument and a radio that broadcasts air traffic control communications from the FAA tower. Bring a picnic and spend the afternoon watching airplanes.

LEGO Mini-Build – LEGO Store at Northpark Center – Dallas

Who doesn’t love LEGOs? Once a month at the LEGO store at Dallas’ Northpark Center, you can participate in a free mini-build!  This event has limited space and time slots are available on a first-come, first-serve basis. Due to safety and build experience standards, builders must be between the ages of 6-14 to participate. The mini model must be completely built in store. In order to sign up, guests must have a registered LEGO® VIP email address. If you do not have one you can create one for free at shop.LEGO.com/VIP. The August mini-build is a cute little snail!

CONCERTS

Addison Summer Series – Addison

Rockin’ the River – Fort Worth

Legacy Hall – Plano

Levitt Pavilion – Arlington

I’m a huge fan of outdoor concerts, enjoying the DFW sky under the stars (and in some cases under the stars) and listening to your favorite bands – and for free. From Addison’s Summer Series, Arlington’s Levitt Pavilion, Fort Worth’s Rockin’ the River and Legacy Hall in Plano (and more), you can almost find a concert every weekend. One of my favorites’ is Levitt Pavilion in Arlington. Downtown you’ll find a beautiful outdoor stage that accommodates more than 100,000 visitors for more than 50 concerts a year.

MUSEUMS

Dallas Museum of Art – Dallas

Amon Carter Museum – Fort Worth

I love a good museum and in the summer when it’s not just hot or a good rainy day in the winter, there’s no better place to retreat than to immerse yourself in learning. Two of the best museums with free admission are the Dallas Museum of Art and the Amon Carter Museum in Fort Worth. You’ll find American art as well as free tours even for the kids. So don’t miss an opportunity to enjoy the art of some of their own outdoor programs throughout the summer, so head to their website for more on times and dates.

Amon Carter Museum

Photo from Amon Carter Museum Facebook Page

Klyde Warren Park – Dallas

Right in the middle of Dallas, you’ll find a 5.2 acre deck park over the highway with tons to do all year long. Open anytime, you can check out the programming like this weekend’s STEM in the Park, from 9 am – 3:30 pm.

Other activities you can do at Klyde Warren Park include:

  • Performance Pavilion
  • Savor and Relish
  • Walking trails
  • Dog park
  • Children’s park
  • Games area

Fireworks – Lake Grapevine

Nothing can make anyone feel like a kid again than watching fireworks. And Grapevine does a free 10-minute show (with a downloadable music soundtrack) every Friday night at 9:30 pm as part of their SummerBlast program, from Memorial Day to Labor Day. Viewing areas include Acorn Woods Park, the field next to Scott’s Landing Marina, Horseshoe Trails Park, Oak Grove Park (baseball, soccer and softball fields), Katie’s Woods Park, Lakeview Park and Rockledge Park for $5 a car.

Other great free places to enjoy in DFW include:

  • Fort Worth Botanic Gardens – Fort Worth
  • Sundance Square Fountains – Fort Worth
  • Fort Worth Stockyards – Fort Worth
  • River Legacy Science Center – Arlington

Cool Down with Unique Ice Cream Sodas

July 9, 2018 By Autumn Rose Reo 14 Comments

Before there was Starbucks…there were Ice Cream Soda shops. And there weren’t WiFi connections or grab and go. You waited your turn to get your special unique ice cream soda and just enjoyed it.

People gathered to catch up, go on a date, talk business and enjoy life’s simple joys of creamy, delicious, delectable concoctions with a straw and without a device. Just being able to share a Coca-Cola float sprinkled with a few peanuts atop a whip cream (considered the bees knees at the time) was a big treat and no one worried about calories.

Ice-Cream-Soda

Those were the days. And I wouldn’t mind a little moment in a poodle skirt to enjoy one.

While we can’t experience the fun of a soda jerk bringing your favorite soda to the table at too many places anymore, you can play the part at home developing your own unique ice cream sodas. All you need is your imagination to devise your own creations using some of those fun sodas like from Sparkling Ice or Mexican sodas like Juanitos, interesting ice creams in the pint section, and one super cold glass.

And don’t forget your fat pants (this is a great time to find your old maternity pants.)

Ice-Cream-Sodas

So cool off this summer with some of the best recipes for ice cream sodas like we’re making on Good Morning Texas.

All of today’s recipes were made with ingredients found at Tom Thumb/Randalls Stores. However, you can find many of these at your local grocery store in the soda and ice cream aisle (except the beer for our truly fantastic Grownups version of Chocolate Brownie Ice Cream Float.

Score: First Timers Guide to a FC Dallas Game at Toyota Stadium

June 22, 2018 By Autumn Rose Reo Leave a Comment

Dallas Fort Worth isn’t just home to the Dallas Cowboys and the Texas Rangers…there are several other national teams including FC Dallas at Toyota Stadium. If you’re headed to a game, then here’s our First Timers Guide to a FC Dallas Game.

Thanks to Toyota for an amazing afternoon kicking it with FC Dallas in my Toyota 2018 Camry and this sponsored post.

Being a Texas girl, I’ve done my time at the football game and many lazy afternoons at baseball fields. So I pretty much knew what to expect the first time I went to a Cowboys game at AT&T Stadium and headed to Globe Life Park (remember I used to be in walkable distance of there?) But my first professional REAL football (as called by the rest of the world AKA – soccer), I wasn’t quite ready at all.

FCDallas at Toyota Stadium

So my friends at Toyota decided it was time to school this Texas girl on all things “football” at Toyota Stadium – home to the FC Dallas for its opening day. If you may not have heard of it, Toyota Stadium and Toyota Soccer Center is a 145-acre multipurpose sports and entertainment facility in Frisco, Texas. Home stadium for FC Dallas and hosts the FCS Championship Game, the Frisco Bowl as well a variety of concerts, tournaments and other events, this venue will also soon be the home of the National Soccer Hall of Fame.

FC Dallas Toyota Stadium

The combination of a world-class stadium and a sports park make Toyota Stadium one of the best and most unique soccer facilities in the world. Included in the facility is the 20,500 state-of-the-art pro soccer stadium and 17 tournament-sized fields.

So we headed in a beautiful red 2018 Toyota Camry (talk about showing our spirit) to enjoy the fun…And man, the fun we did have as well as learn a lot about FC Dallas games.

Here’s our First Timer’s Guide to a FC Dallas Game at Toyota Stadium

Get Your Tickets

This might seem to be obvious but you actually can order tickets for the whole season as well as single games. There are several areas to also consider when purchasing your tickets including the East Field Box, Beer Garden and of course, suites as well as general seating. If it was up to me, I think hanging with the “real fans” on the field as part of the drum squad – they knew what was up. And our seats under the suites, but still in a covered shaded area were pretty sweet (because it’s HOT!)

AND remember: Children three (3) feet and under are not required to have a ticket for admission but must sit on the lap of a ticketed guardian.

FC Dallas Tickets

Did you know you can also host birthday parties at Toyota Stadium or bring your work team for the game? FC Dallas can show ’em how team works happens – plus it’s a whole new way to kick it!

Drum Team

What to Wear

Like any sporting event, you want to show your spirit for the team with jerseys, shirts, hats, etc. Thankfully, many of us already have a red, white or blue clothing to donn for the day. You can always head to the Team Shop or FCDallasGear.com in advance as well, but whatever you do, just make sure it’s tasteful (ok to be around all ages that is!) Comfortable shoes and hat (to shield the sun) will be great. Also, make sure to throw on that first layer of sunscreen!

FC Dallas Toyota Stadium

What to Bring

In effect this year the stadium has gone to a no purse/handbag rule except bags that are clear plastic and do not exceed 14” x 6” x 14”. Of course there are exceptions which you can check online, but make it easy on yourself and just don’t bring it – unless it’s a flag – because those are ok (just check the policy first.)

FC Dallas Toyota Stadium

If you plan to tailgate, then you’ll need to load up the car with what you need for proper tailgating, but leave your open air grill at home because they’re not allowed. Stake your space early as well – parking here like any game can get complicated!

Most of all, make sure not to bring any of the following because you can’t bring it in with you to the facility:

Items NOT permitted:

  • Weapons of any kind (i.e. knives (including pocket knives), pepper spray, stun-guns, slingshots, concealed weapons, firearms etc.)
  • Fireworks of any kind (including smoke bombs and flares)
  • No glass and plastic bottles, cans, cups, coolers, containers, food or beverages of any kind
  • Air horns, whistles, seat cushions
  • Illegal drugs or chemicals
  • Laser pointers
  • Cups
  • Bags larger than 14x14x6
  • Inflated Soccer Balls
  • Umbrellas
  • Animals (except service animals)
  • Un-approved pamphlets, handouts, advertisements, etc.
  • Skateboards, roller blades, roller skates, etc.

Thankfully, the booths mostly take credit cards, but cash sometimes makes things easier too when it comes to make things go faster!

Where to Park

It pays to drive a Toyota — especially to Toyota Stadium. If driving around a NEW Toyota Camry to the game wasn’t enough –  if you have a Toyota you get the UPGRADE!

  • FC Dallas fans driving their Toyota vehicles to FC Dallas home matches will receive complimentary Toyota Preferred Parking located in the South Sienna Blue Stadium East Lot.
    • The reserved Toyota Preferred Parking spaces reach capacity quickly and are available on a first-come, first serve basis.
    • Fans are encouraged to arrive 60-minutes prior to kick.
  • Free parking remains available for all guests to FC Dallas home matches in all the Corolla Red Stadium West Lots, the Highlander Green Lots and the RAV4 White Lot.
  • Preferred public parking is located in the Camry Gold Lot. The Cost to park in the Camry Gold Lot is $20.

If you don’t come early to enjoy the festivities, then just know you’ll be walking a little bit to the other outlying parking. And it’s a bit of a trek with littles, so plan accordingly. (And remember, no bags and no rentry, so only take what you need!)

FC Dallas Toyota Stadium

What to Expect

Everyone goes through security – no matter the age and has their items checked. The process is easy and once you’re in – the fun begins!

FC Dallas

If you’re like me, you like to have a lay of the land – where the food is, where the exits are, and most importantly, where the bathrooms are. So take a look here to acclimated before you go. It’s easy to navigate once you get there as it’s an open space in a big circle.

Now what? Then let’s have some fun! Lots of red, white and blue (the colors of FC Dallas), lots of spirit, and a lot of Toyota love (of course!) This one is rather perfect, don’t you think?

FC Dallas Toyota Stadium

As for the festivities – get ready and come for the full game so you don’t miss them! There’s fireworks, chants, and much more that aren’t always at other games! Make sure to take in the whole experience.

What to Eat

This might have been one of my favorite things I discovered about Toyota Stadium. Most stadiums may have a beer sponsor, but at Toyota, we have a tequila sponsor – Lunazul! So the margaritas here are really good – especially when you’re sitting in the heat! But that’s not all my friends… There was other great cocktails to enjoy too all around the stadium including an Old Fashioned and of course, several beer selections!

FC Dallas at Toyota Stadium

We may have covered the drinks, but what about the eats? There are 10 booths serving food at Toyota Stadium. You’ll find your usual suspects like fries, nachos, and burgers. But keep looking – you’ll also find some killer street tacos, elotes and even smothered tater tots! The food was legit and also reasonable, so this stadium gets a two thumbs up!

I hope this guide to a FC Dallas Game at Toyota Stadium helps you take on the day like a pro! You’ll have a great time and get ready for a lot of fun!

Why Mom Needs to Play

June 1, 2018 By Autumn Rose Reo 9 Comments

When’s the last time you played with your kids? Forget the sidelines because Mom Needs to Play!

Thanks to The Crayola Experience and Dunkin Donuts for partnering with mamachallenge for some great giveaways.

When is the last time you “played” with your kids?

Not just watched them but played with them?

Playing

Studies show that moms that play with their kids vs. just managed, monitor, or act as the organizer are happier as individuals. And a bonus: seeing mom at play (and happy doing it) also creates a stronger bond with the kids to see you be happy.

Science also shows that the more productive and creative moms at play initiated the release of dopamine, the chemical that actually makes you happy.

Happy Mama, Happier Family.

Now this doesn’t mean you aren’t the parent, it’s more that you are involved in the process rather than administer it all the time. I remember as a kid, going swimming meant your parent watched you swim. And as a parent, I’ve done the same thing, but my kids have asked, can’t you go swimming with us? That’s parenting gold – simple request for such a simple thing to make them happy and it’s exercise!

PlayingintheWater

Another poll asked kids what invention they hated most and the #1 answer was cell phones because their kids were always on them! That says a lot, right?

I actually asked my Facebook friends what’s something they loved as kids and quit doing as adults. The list filled up quick – with tons of things they loved doing and hadn’t done in years. But almost every one of them couldn’t be done with the kids.

🚨 ACT NOW: Keep Public $$$ in Public Schools! 🚨

Click Here (takes less than one minute):
https://www.txpta.org/take-action

Tomorrow, March 11, the Texas House Committee on Public Education will hear HB 3. Let’s make it clear: Public money demands public accountability!

Texans have rejected vouchers since 1957—yet lawmakers are once again pushing them through with SB 2 and HB 3.

💰 Vouchers drain public school resources.
📉 They don’t improve student achievement.
❌ They aren’t about "parent choice"—private schools choose their students.
🏫 Texas parents already have school choice.

Governor Abbott is making vouchers a priority, but Texans are pushing back. Lawmakers are feeling the heat from voters who refuse to let public schools be undermined.

📲 Take 1 minute to make your voice heard NOW!

📷Jackson and Taylor are 2 of the 5.5 million reasons why Texas must keep public dollars in public schools. I was a product of public schools and had an amazing experience in a rural community with some of the best teachers. Change needs to happen, but taking away resources like these from schools is not especially when they ste already underfunded and our teachers’ morale is at an all time low. Communities work better together not when you separate them further apart.

Named after Bangkok’s legendary road of entertainment of all kinds (Sukhumvit Soi 11), it seems fitting this newly imagined destination would find its home in Arlington’s Entertainment District. Anchoring the NEW @loewsarlington, @soycowboytx (also from @bbbutchers / @berghospitality) recently swung open the curtain this summer with an opening that made heads turn at every corner of this 12,000 sq. ft. of sexy space - with 3 unique bars, patio, viewable kitchen and dining room.

To call it a “Pan Asian restaurant” doesn’t do it justice with its rich menu of fresh sushi, dim sum, caviar, truffle, lobster, waygu (all things you don’t find in the home of the margarita machine and ballpark nachos.) And if you’re looking for entertainment, just take a peek into the expansive kitchen and watch your rolls or omakase be made. The cocktail menu is just as extravagant with everything from mezcal to Japanese whisky, you’re eyes will be just as happy as your lips upon your first sip.

While we experienced live music, fashion show and more as part of the opening, the cool smoke installation and the people-watching is definitely just part of the menu at Soy Cowboy you’ll have to explore.
