Make a New Holiday Tradition with the Lights at Daystar

November 21, 2018 By Autumn Rose Reo Leave a Comment

Make a holiday tradition that you will all love with the lights at Daystar. Visit Santa, take photos at Christmas Town and experience the meaning of Christmas. #DaystarChristmas

Thanks to Daystar for the invitation and the opportunity to enjoy the lights with my family and not just taking the photos!

DFW is home to many amazing light displays. Each has its own unique experience and we love going back year after year to see what’s new and to visit our favorite parts. But this year we had the opportunity to add a beautiful new-to-us light display to the list – and it was just around the corner from our home at Daystar TV in Euless.

Daystar

The lights at Daystar actually aren’t new – they started them in 2005 as a nice way to celebrate the season. But the beauty quickly caught on and the display grew two-fold with one million lights and now 1.5 million in 2019 with the addition of a new beautiful light drive-through tunnel along with more fun in  Christmas Town, an area dedicated to entertaining children by bringing in their favorite holiday characters and a lighted gazebo surrounded by toy soldiers. Children can also see a 6-foot tall Olaf joined by his two penguin friends, Santa’s workshop with elves, and a gingerbread house filled with gingerbread people. And don’t miss a moment on the Santa Sleigh!

Daystar

We were able to park right at the displays and take a look around and visit each area at our own schedule while taking photos and singing along the way. The kids LOVED it and what I loved is it was just the right size – without lines, without traffic, and without any costs.

And when we left we had that warm and fuzzy feeling that you want at Christmas.

Daystar

Daystar

While the event’s activities are over, you can still check out the light displays until Jan. 6. Also please make sure to Save the Date for next year – it’s definitely on our short list for years to come. You’ll be able to experience the Living Nativity, visit with Santa and take a beautiful shot for your own Christmas cards. Each year more than 100,000 cars drive by the network’s international headquarters everyday, and by adding new additions like Christmas Town and pictures with Santa, hopefully more people in the community will come and enjoy the holiday fun as they spend quality time with family and friends this Christmas season.

Thanksgiving Pairings for Everything

November 18, 2018 By Autumn Rose Reo Leave a Comment

Thanksgiving isn’t just primetime for turkey, it’s time for wine, too! With so many dishes to enjoy in one meal, here’s a guide for winin’ and dinin’ for Thanksgiving Pairings from Messina Hof.

It’s not everyday that you get invited (again) for a private wine tasting with the owners of the most-awarded winery in Texas, so when it happens, you say yes (again.)

Thanksgiving Messina Hof

Pulling up to the Main Street in Grapevine, I was all smiles (and a little bit of anxiety) to spend the afternoon with my mom getting to know Paul and Karen Bonarrigo, the other half-owners of Messina Hof. The couple hails from the 40-year-old Messina Hof legacy began by Paul Vincent and Merrill Bonarrigo in Bryan, Texas, which has expanded to produce 130,000 gallons per year and the leader in the Texas wine industry. Paul also is the president-elect of the Texas Wine and Grape Growers Association (TWGGA), so to say this “pairing” knows wine is an understatement.

Thanksgiving Messina Hof

Thanksgiving Messina Hof

However, about two seconds together, as the first ounce hit the bottom of the glass, it seemed like four old friends were catching up as we enjoyed several of the newly released wines. But that’s exactly the best way to describe Messina Hof – and it’s line up of more than 90 wines from 30 varietals – you can taste the family and tradition that has made it the name it is today. And each taste we enjoyed took on a new taste, but with a familiar feeling you just wanted to continue to enjoy.

Thanksgiving Messina Hof

So just in time for Thanksgiving, an event heralded for spending time with great food, great friends, and great family, there’s no better winemaker than Messina Hof to help you pair with the dishes you’ll have around the table. From turkey, to green bean casserole, and even your cranberry sauce, there’s Texas’ own Messina Hof to pair perfectly.

Thanksgiving Pairings

Holiday foods are usually bigger than life – big flavors, heavy textures, rich ingredients, and lots of herbs and spices. Those complex dishes make for dynamic wine pairings that can flex in different directions. Plus, your guests will have different palates and will enjoy different elements of dishes. So, have multiple wines available for sampling.

How to Handle the Germ Season (with Kids)

November 7, 2018 By Autumn Rose Reo 6 Comments

This post is sponsored by and SheKnows Media.

When you have kids, you have illness. While it’s never convenient to be sick, here’s How to Handle the Germ Season (with Kids.) Just remember help is just one click away with CareNow.

Before I had kids, I considered myself a reasonably healthy person. From time to time, I might have to handle the flu or a bothersome cough, but I rarely had to see a doctor unless it was for my annual exam.

Then I had kids.

Care Now

Now it seems like I’m sick, they’re sick, dad gets sick and then we pass it around for fun. It’s like a bad game of Cupcake Walk except there’s nothing sweet about it.

There’s those times when a little TLC, chicken soup, and a weekend in bed only result in your kid waking up on a Monday morning with the voice of a raspy old lady saying “mama, I don’t feel good.”

Unfortunately, just because someone in your family is sick doesn’t mean that life doesn’t keep happening…like work meetings, school projects, and all the other stuff in between.

Bottom line: you gotta stop the sick cycle in its tracks.

While washing hands, covering your mouth when sneezing or coughing, and the rest can do a lot, it’s not always going to the trick.

That’s why CareNow has become a bookmark on my favorites.

Care Now

When I feel (or see) something coming on, or need to arm my family for the upcoming flu season, I just check us in online and wait where we want to, in our home, instead of in a waiting room. Once we get the notice that the doctor is ready to see us, we head into our nearby CareNow.

Care Now

Upon arrival, we can check in, get almost instant access to be seen by a medical professional, and then get the care (and the prescriptions) we need. Then we can head home and begin healing. Best of all, if you need to grab an immunization or even get your kid’s physical for school, you can get it done at CareNow too.

Care Now

Care Now

Yes, it’s that easy.
1. Check-in Online (you can do it from your phone.)
2. Head to the clinic when you receive a call/message.
3. Check in at the nearby CareNow and wait shortly to hear your name.
4. Get the care you need.
5. Check out and get on your way with life.

The fact that there’s not much paperwork to complete (you can do it once online and then it’s stored in your account) and the waiting room has coffee and wireless, makes CareNow our go to for when we need care NOW and on our schedule.

Care Now

About CareNow

When you are sick or injured, the last thing you need is a long wait at the doctor’s office or emergency room. You deserve quality medical care that’s also convenient. That’s why CareNow is dedicated to reducing your wait while improving your health. Next time you or a loved one is under the weather, visit a CareNow urgent care clinic to feel better fast. With over 112 urgent care clinics around the United States and 30 locations in DFW, CareNow is ready to serve you near your home, workplace or school. Their clinics are open 7 days a week and stay open late to provide care when you need it the most.

Girlfriend’s Guide to the Toyota Music Factory

November 6, 2018 By Autumn Rose Reo 1 Comment

Toyota Music Factory makes it easy for friends + food + fun. No decisions necessary – just go and get ready for the fun to happen with this Girlfriend’s Guide to the Toyota Music Factory in Irving.

It’s no shocker anyone who knows me that I’m very indecisive about where I want to eat.

Whether it’s going through a drive-thru or headed out for something a little more special than a normal Friday night, I deliberate forever about not just where to eat, but what to eat.

Toyota Music Factory

Think that’s annoying?

Just get me together when one of my girlfriends and we might as well start talking about it at breakfast time so we have something narrowed down by the time it’s actually dinner. However, I’ve learned that it isn’t just us – it’s also most women in general. There’s something about making all these other big choices in life that a meal just stops us in our tracks (unless it’s Starbucks, well #becausecoffee.) And while the idea of making lists, creating jars with names to randomly pick, or just going off the first thing that comes to mind seems like it would narrow down the choices, it doesn’t.

Toyota Music Factory

However, Irving has figured out the secret for one-stop food + fun that can make us all happy…Toyota Music Factory. With a name like that it’s obvs that it’s a music place (one of the best in my opinion for both indoor and outdoor intimate concert experiences), but there’s also a movie theatre for your viewing pleasure AND tons of restaurants (from cheese and wine to ice cream like you’ve never had), it’s all in one place in the middle of the metroplex – easy to find, easy to park, and even easier to have a memorable and decision-free evening (or afternoon!) Each spot is only steps from the other and each experience is entirely different, so even if you can’t make a decision on one place to go – do a few like a progressive dinner (where you don’t have to make anything!)

Toyota Music Factory

There are many options, but I have some of my top picks – ready for you to pick on just a Monday night or a big night out before (and after) the concert (true story, I even went out one night by myself to see Matchbox Twenty and had a blast – with no one but little ole me.)

Don’t Miss This: Irving Music Factory Picks

Nosh & Bottle Market
One word: charcuterie. There’s nothing quicker to my heart than a meat and cheese plate…except a beautiful glass of wine to go with. So naturally this hybrid neighborhood market/wine spot is the perfect place to start a night (or if you are loving the mood, then stay until they send you home or they pull out a chair with you.)

Toyota Music Factory

Toyota Music Factory

Top Round Roast Beef
I wasn’t ready to love this place as much as I did – as roast beef isn’t normally my dinner bell. But I was quite taken – not just by the amazing “chef driven” food, but the hospitality of Top Round Roast Beef. There was so much to learn about the philosophy too and the customer service was off the charts. And yes, while you can get a great frozen custard, you can score a beer or glass of wine!

Toyota Music Factory

Toyota Music Factory

Gloria’s Latin Cuisine

This staple is always one of my favorites, which is why so many people go to it as their destination for a little somethin’ different than just Tex-Mex…it’s a mix of Salvadorian, Mexican and Tex-Mex dishes. And don’t miss the margaritas – especially since Gloria’s has happy hour ALL. DAY. LONG.

Toyota Music Factory

Pop Factory

Oh jeez – get ready for all your dessert dreams to come true, but even better – because they’re healthy (or at least healthier than normal when it comes to sugar.) Combinations with everything from strawberries, green tea, and much more exotic – you can get it customized, dipped, or whatever you want – on a stick.

Toyota Music Factory

Kabuki Japanese Restaurant

If you’re looking for a night to put on the heels, this is your spot (but they don’t care if you choose flip flops either.) The menu gives you both the old and new taste of Japanese cuisine – especially the sushi rolls. With many kids choices, gluten free and veggie options this is a great go-to for the whole brood, but I suggest leaving them at home and gathering the girls for the sangria. It’s worth the drive just for that.

Toyota Music Factory

Toyota Music Factory

Toyota Music Factory

The Pavilion at Toyota Music Factory

When I heard about the concept for this facility, I was giddy. But when I finally go to go and experience the place, I was ELATED. I’d always loved outdoor music venues with lawn seating, but of course, it does stink when it rains or it’s miserably cold. The Pavilion gives you both options – and just a few minutes down the road in the middle of DFW. And since you have so many places to go before and after a show, it’s a no brainer this place is where to to go.

Toyota Music Factory

Alamo Drafthouse Cinema

You’ll never watch movies the same way after an evening at the Alamo. Yes, you have movies, but there’s the mighty good food and drinks AND the super comfortable loungers you sit in while you watch your movie and have dinner. Or you can always skip the movie – and go for drinks after the show.

Toyota Music Factory

Thirsty Lion

Don’t be caught off guard at the Thirsty Lion – it’s definitely not just drinks. There’s food for days as well as room for groups – small and large. But the drinks are definitely worth the time…just be careful to not start there unless you’re going to stay there…because otherwise, you won’t leave.

Other Good Choices (for Next Time):

Grimaldi’s Brick Oven Pizzeria

Family Fun Comes to the Run: New Features at BMW Dallas Marathon

October 16, 2018 By Autumn Rose Reo Leave a Comment

Life may already seem like a race, but the BMW Dallas Marathon is the one all of you can win. Register now for new family events before the price increases! #RunBMWDALLAS.

Thanks to the BMW Dallas Marathon for creating more ways for families to be healthier together and this sponsored post.

BIG ANNOUNCEMENT: I’m running in the 48th annual BMW Dallas Marathon
…with my kids.

Crazy, right? Especially since we haven’t trained one little bit.

Dallas BMW Marathon

But since two years ago when I saw the look of so much happiness and so much accomplishment stretch across my son’s face as he crossed the finish line of his first race, I knew what running a race together can do for your heart, your mind, and your soul. (Talk about tear jerker!)

BMW Dallas Marathon

But let me be clear: We ARE participating in the BMW Dallas Marathon on Saturday, December 8 in the new Kids Races!

The Kids Races (100m dash, 400m dash, 800m dash and 1-mile) invite the whole family together to participate in all the races for just $10 for the kids (12 years and under) and parents can run with their kids for free. This is just one of the new Saturday events added this year that includes a 10K, 5K, 2-mile walk, and 2-Mile Dog Walk (even your dog can join!) Paired with getting a t-shirt and finisher’s medal the whole family can be a part of the fun.

BMW Dallas Marathon

After the races, we’re headed to the second day of the FREE Health & Fitness Expo across the street at the Kay Bailey Hutchison Convention Center. With “more than 40,000 attendees with 50-60 vendors catering to the health & fitness community within 100,000 square feet of Expo space,” we’re gonna double our steps that day (and learn a whole lot of info and load up on some fitness freebies). Plus with bounce houses, facepainting and other fun activities, the kids may never leave – and it’s ok since it’s free!)

BMW Dallas Marathon Health & Fitness Expo

When: Dec. Friday (11 am-7 pm) and Saturday (9 am-6 pm)

Where: Kay Bailey Hutchison Convention Center (Hall C)

What I also love about the BMW Dallas Marathon is that the proceeds go to support Scottish Rite Hospital, which is something I can share with my kids that their participation helps other children just like them to get the help they need.

Actually there are many ways to get moving with the BMW Dallas Marathon:

BMW 5K Social Runs

I actually came across this last year when I participated in the one near my house. I wasn’t sure what to expect with a social run, but we (around 400-500 of my newest friends) got a shirt, had snacks, did a timed-run, and then got to celebrate with some liquid carbs (beer) and snacks. So this year, I was quick to sign up – because these social runs happen across the metroplex AND they’re free. They’re limited registration though, so it’s good to get on these fast – especially since they’ve already begun! Get the details.

Dallas BMW Marathon

The Big One(s) – The Marathon, Half Marathon & Ultra Marathon (50K)

I might not be quite ready for this one in 2018, but it’s definitely on the bucket list (who’s with me?) On Sunday, December 9, take on Big D in a whole new way by running in the marathon, half-marathon, or the new ultra marathon (50 MILES!!!) races (just

BMW Dallas Marathon

The BMW Dallas Marathon makes it easy for us to work on something together, be a part of huge event in Dallas doing something healthy as a family. While my bucket list still includes getting to the full 26.219 miles while day, this year is starting the path with both myself and my kids to do something together.

Make Vacation Last Forever – Flytographer

October 13, 2018 By Autumn Rose Reo Leave a Comment

Are you finally taking that bucket list trip and want to record it for the books? Take those once-in-a-lifetime photos with your own vacation photographer on demand.

This year I’ve worked hard to “enjoy the moment.”

Flytographer-Cabo

Seems a little ironic to work to enjoy anything, right? But after the longest year it seemed ever we finally got to go on THE VACATION. I didn’t plan much except the flight to get there and the hotel, but every day was a dream – as witnessed with what Mother Nature greeted us every day and wished us good night every evening. And of course the giggles, experiences and conversations our family was having.

I wanted to relive it every day for the rest of my days.

But at some point I was going to have to get back to life (at least until I win the lottery.)

While I would have photos I had snapped on my phone, I really wanted to be in them too, not to mention be beautiful enough that I could put on the shelf or mount on the wall in our home so we could be reminded of the experience every day while we walk by them.

Cabo Chileno Bay

Unfortunately, we only were only in Cabo for one more day and it’s not like I could find a good photographer and they could be here in 24 hours to take family photos. While I contacted our concierge and she had some amazing recommendations, in one day and at a price that wasn’t going to be more than our vacation in total.

So on to Google I went — it was worth at least looking (where’s there is a will, there’s a way, right?)

My way was – Flytographer. And viola! While sitting next to the pool, on my phone, I searched for Cabo and TOMORROW. I was able to view photographers and their portfolios to match the look I was going for to see if they were available. In just short moment, a concierge (Liss) matched me up and I had a photographer for less than 24 hours! An even better, there were a few packages available so I could not only select my photographer, but choose a package that was on budget. Then with my confirmation I had it paid for and literally the exact spot we would meet (with an address and a photo of the meeting point so there were questions!)

Now all I had to do was get my kids up the next morning and smile.

Flytographer-Cabo

And that’s exactly what we did.

Considering the best photos on the beach happen at sunrise or sunset, it was an early morning for us but our Flytographer, Fernanda, knew what to do to make us happy. She had a great personality, was bubbly and sweet, and even brown a princess crown for the birthday girl. (She was thrilled of course.)

Flytographer-Cabo

For the next 30 minutes she guided us on the beach for both a group of poised shots and candids so we had several different frames to remember our trip AND get that shot I wanted for the mantle. We played in the water, we hugged, we kissed, and we laughed. And best of all we were done before breakfast!

Surviving the First Big Accident

October 1, 2018 By Autumn Rose Reo 17 Comments

Motherhood is full of many firsts, unfortunately the first accident your child has is going to be one of them. However, you’ll both get through the first big accident with a little help from .

This post is sponsored by CareNow and SheKnows Media.

As a new mom there are many wonderful “first” moments you get to experience.

The first smile. The first laugh. The first time you plainly hear “mama” cross their lips.

Unfortunately, there are going to be many other firsts that don’t make you feel all warm and fuzzy.

The first real cold. The first tooth (when it’s coming in.) And the first accident.

Hopefully for you, a bandage and a magic kiss from mama will make that “first” moment all better. However, there is probably going to be that first real moment (as evidenced by Facebook feed) when a kiss isn’t going to make it all better. You need real medical help because there’s blood, pain, or a broken bone that you can’t make go away all by yourself.

(Yes, this is the part of parenting that really sucks.)

For me, I remember that “first” moment like it was yesterday. I had been home with my son for an extended maternity leave (about a year) working from home, and the time had finally come when I needed to go to a meeting. Until then, my meets were playdates – Jackson, me, and a diaper bag. I felt so anxious – first to put on adult clothes (those that once upon a time fit me in the work world, but now didn’t look or feel the same) and second because I had to talk to people about something else besides my new kid.

I was so *beyond* nervous. And the meeting was just one hour – you would have thought it was a whole week the way I was acting.

My husband took off a few hours to watch our little baby while I was out, and then I would return home to reclaim my throne of mama.

Should be a piece of cake, right?

When I rolled out of my meeting and turned on my phone to let the boys know I was on my way home, I found a voicemail from my husband already waiting for me:

“Hi Honey, (all nervous and shaky sounding), Jackson pulled my razor on him and he’s bleeding. It’s pretty bad. Call me when you’re on your way.”

Are you kidding me???

I rushed into our house and my husband gave me the play by play:

He was getting ready for work and Jackson was in the bathroom with him. For two seconds he turned around to wipe his face, and in that time, Jackson (who was beginning to crawl at the time), pulled the cord to his electric razor and it fell on him – the side of the razor just graced the side of my son’s face to create a cut along his eyebrow.

All I could see was the towel dotted red as I reached to hold my son, I was just devastated. Then, my husband had to return to work, leaving me to figure out what to do for our baby, who while bleeding, seemed to be reasonably content and unbothered by the events.

All kinds of things were running through my head, but I knew we needed to see someone now.  I had often passed by a place nearby called CareNow. Although I wasn’t sure exactly how it worked, the name signaled that it was exactly what I was looking for.

CareNow

As I entered the clinic, I was greeted warmly by the woman at the desk and she asked how she could help. Even in my crazy anxious state, she understood my gibberish and assured me that the doctor would see us as soon as possible. We took a seat in the lobby and in just a few minutes, our name was called and we were lead to a bed for them to take a look.

CareNow

Once I was standing back from my son and the doctors, for the first time that morning, I took a deep breath.

It was gonna be ok.

The doctor let me know there had been no real injuries, just a small cut that required one.whole.stitch.

He was going to be ok.

In just a few minutes and a small bandage later, we were done and on our way home – all before lunch.

Thankfully, I was able to get the care now that we needed with a little help from CareNow.

See: A Star is Born

September 26, 2018 By Autumn Rose Reo Leave a Comment

If Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga together (and singing) wasn’t enough, there are many more reasons to see “A Star is Born.”

If the name of the movie “A Star is Born” sounds familiar, you’ve just aged yourself (and we are somewhat the same age), so you’re in good company. But if this is your first go around of this movie, that’s ok, because that’s the whole point: Every era deserves “A Star is Born.”

And while I could go on and on about comparisons to all the other versions before it, the one that remains constant is that it’s a timeless story on many levels that we all can “get” something from and move on with something to think about. For me on that evening of our media sneak peek at the film I was thrilled to see a film on my “can’t wait to see it list” that featured two of my favorite artists and that THE Bradley Cooper would be there *in person* to talk about the film. HOWEVER, when I left, I still wanted to talk about what I had seen, experienced, and as Cooper so perfectly said in front of the media-crowd, “I’m done with it, it’s now yours.”

“Music is essentially 12 notes between any octave – 12 notes and the octave repeats. It’s the same story told over and over, forever. All any artist can offer this world is how they see those 12 notes. That’s it.”

While I’m no movie critic, one of the biggest lines of the movie that stuck with me was when Sam Elliott (if you don’t know what an amazing actor he is, his voice alone should make you stand up straighter) repeats to Lady Gaga what Jackson (Cooper’s character) has said many times. “Music is essentially 12 notes between any octave…12 notes and the octave repeats. It’s the same story told over and over, forever. All any artist can offer this world is how they see those 12 notes. That’s it.”

So of course on the first layer of that he’s talking about artists. But really it’s everyone. Everyone and everything. While we all think we’re out doing some new, different, etc…like “A Star is Born,” we may be putting our own spin on it, but nothing is new and for it to be good, it doesn’t have to be new. It just needs to be yours.

A Star is Born Dallas

The movie itself, as witnessed by all the different ages, demographics, etc. around me, will make you laugh, cry (a lot), make you anxious, and all that. And while I could go through the storyline, it too is not new, but the ageless story of a veteran celebrity that is on his way down (in more ways than one) and meets the new star that is on the rise. The issues between them may make the story progress, but it is a love story and one we all hope that will go differently than you know it already does in the end, but still hope will change if you just hope it to enough.

However, I’ll admit many parts of the movie I felt very uncomfortable. Not because of the topic matter, but more so, watching the cinematic angles used by Cooper (this movie is his directorial debut) make you almost feel like you aren’t watching a movie but you’re in it. Especially during the deeply personal moments where Gaga and Cooper are spending that odd, personal couple time together, you almost feel like you’re the third wheel and unfortunately Gaga is the only one getting “gaga eyes” from Cooper. His twinkle at her alone makes your toes tingle (among other things.)

A Star is Born Dallas

I love more than anything a good story about rock and roll (like the good stuff that used to play on the radio that DJs played and not apps) with guitars, drums and made the hair on your arms stand up when you’d hear the first few notes start to riff. So this movie totally delivers – and unexpectedly, Cooper kicks ass as that quintessential “rocker,” that’s one part outlaw country, one part Eddie Vedder, and one part I couldn’t ever put my finger or my ear on (at the time.) So when later when we had the opportunity to ask him about his influence in his voice and his character for the movie, he mentioned he spent three days with Eddie Vedder to create his character as well as working my new favorite, the in-movie back up band, Lukas Nelson and the Promise of the Real. But somewhere in there I saw a little Eric Church, a little Merle Haggard, and a touch of that Sam Elliott voice that “he stole” (which is actually part of the story line), that makes up “Jackson Maine.”

And I’d be wrong not to say that watching Lady Gaga was more “Joanne” and less Gaga, so for me, I was thrilled. Her voice delivers each and every time her, the real woman that we know as Gaga, shined through, just the way the film was meant to. But Gaga, or my preferred name of Stefani, wasn’t the only star that appeared in film that just continued to keep me sublimely happy and surprised…Sam Elliott, Dave Chappelle, Andrew Dice Clay, and Hamilton fans rejoice when Anthony Ramos comes on screen.

I would be remiss not to discuss the issues of addiction, suicide, fame, social media, etc. that really are the cornerstones of the film, but rather if it’s a main storyline for you or just part of this love story, that’s all in who is watching it.  But I think that everyone gets from “A Star is Born” what they want to get, which probably is why you might go see it more than once. If you read the reviews, it’s good. Damn good. Good acting, good soundtrack, good lessons, good entertainment – it’s good stuff. And this timeless screenplay that has transcended the ages is good. However, if this era actually learns a little something from “A Star is Born,” that might be the best thing that can rise from this film.

Say Hola to Chileno Bay Resort & Residences – Cabo Mexico

September 14, 2018 By Autumn Rose Reo 1 Comment

Searching for refuge for a family vacation that is equally enjoyable for the parents as it is the kids? Say Hola to Chileno Bay Resort & Residences in Cabo Mexico.

Thank you to Auberge Resorts Collection and Chileno Bay Resort & Residences for an amazing sponsored stay and experience.

Somehow summer has almost come to an end and once again we hadn’t gone on a family vacation.

Camp, work projects and and other family obligations had kept me from booking something we could do together AND to be honest, I just didn’t have it in me for a trip to a theme park, a road trip or anything that required me to be the director of fun for a full week.

Bottom line: we all needed to feel rested and refreshed when we got back. I needed a vacation, not a trip and I still needed to take my kids.

Cabo Chileno Bay

And considering our kids were both in bilingual programs, I loved the idea of having a chance to put their knowledge to the test all while having a vacay in the process. Plus, we’re huge fans of Mexico as we were married in Puerto Vallarta and it’s just a short two plus hour ride away from Texas. But then again who doesn’t love beautiful white sandy beaches, azul waves rolling in the background and a few margaritas served poolside.

I found a super amazing deal for four for airfare (you can save $20 each way with each passenger from this airline), I was elated to confirm our stay for four at Chileno Bay Resort & Residences. Immediately by email I was introduced to a concierge named Dulce who would help make our stay everything we wanted both before and while we are at the resort. She sent me ideas for activities and restaurants to visit in nearby Los Cabos, requested our food tastes and allergies, and let me know about all the fun opportunities available for us while we were at the hotel. If we had a request for an activity all I had to do was tell her and it was confirmed.

Cabo Chileno Bay

Chileno Bay & Resorts is nested on one of the only swimmable beaches in Los Cabos. Built in 2017, the resort is centered on the ideology of nature and holistic living from its architecture to its appetizers. With beautiful contemporary design aesthetic, exceptional service and premier location, this resort offers families an opportunity to experience Mexico together without anyone feeling a sacrifice of vacation (or in plain words – you don’t need a vacay after the family vacay.)

Cabo Chileno Bay

Welcome

Upon arrival (only a 30 minute drive to the resort from the airport), we couldn’t have been met with more beauty and hospitality. Best of all, we were met with a tour of the hotel and then to our room where the signature “Chilenito” with mezcal, poblano pepper liqueur and pineapple was handshaken and served to the adults and a special strawberry lemonade for the kids. This was the first of many sweet surprises that would meet us during our stay.

We spent the rest of the day doing exactly what you’d expect when getting to paradise: we spent it at the pool. But the pools at Chileno Bay is an adjoined three-tiered Infinity Edge pool with three areas designed for kids, families and adults. Lined with covered cabanas and service (yes, included), we ordered cocktails (#IgotmyChilenoColada) and a trio of tacos (pastor gringa, chicken and fried shrimp) to eat next to the pool delivered by some of the nicest, timely and attentive servers. Talk about perfection. So much so we’d repeat it every day (whether we were hungry or not) we were there (pool, tacos, sip, sleep and sun.) But that was just the start of the it.

Kids Club

While we loved the opportunity to swim with the kids and even play them in a game of chess, but when we needed a little break for mom and dad (and the kids a break from us), Pescaditos Kids Club and Teens Center was there! Operating daily with special activities including arts, crafts, and meals, they also hosted themed nights and PJ party events throughout the week for a small fee.

Cuisine

We dropped off our dynamic duo for movie night (in their 22 seat movie room) and we rolled over to Comal, the open-air onsite hotel restaurant that overlooked the ocean. If the scenery didn’t just make you want to sell your home and move, the cuisine would. Just because we were in Mexico, there was no Tex-Mex on this menu.

The Comal would also serve as our breakfast spot each morning. With the waves crashing over the rocks and the sun rising over the water each day, I didn’t mind waking up early each day just to enjoy the beauty (and the quiet!) I couldn’t resist an Egg Sandwich with gluten free bread (I would’ve never thought it was GF!) and just the freshness of everything including freshly squeezed juice fusions and the avocados with my eggs!

Cabo Chileno Bay

While I could’ve been happy with nothing but Comal and Tacos + Tequila (the name of the dayside taqueria), I can’t just be satisfied without trying out other offerings. Making it easy for us, we we took the hotel’s shuttle to its sister property, Esperanza, for dinner at Cocina del Mar. Recognized as Travel + Leisure’s 2018 World’s Best Top 100 resorts, we were in for a treat. Dinner overlooking the ocean, beautiful mariachi music in the background, and perfectly timed for my Taylor’s surprise tres leches cake with candle treated at the table from the staff, fireworks blasted out over the Pacific to make one little girl’s birthday one for the books.

Being a dork about food and cocktails, I was so excited to have a private Mixology Class with the Chileno Bay Mixologist and our family. Wonder what kids would learn about making cocktails? Plenty. We learned about local ingredients and their history as well as the science of how they worked together. The kids bellied up to the bar to make lemonades and fusions while mom and dad learned to make the signature Chilenito we had sipped many of and my favorite, a beautiful deep purple colored cocktail called a Humo de Comal with mezcal, chicha (fermented fruit puree), citrus and a smoky brown sugar rim.

Fitness Center

With all the tacos (oh, the tacos!) and Comal fare, there had to be some exercise. Thankfully, with so many options available, I really could do anything from the onsite fitness center to heading out on a paddle board. But what caught my eye was my favorite way to work it – spin. Water spin. (Yes, in the pool and working it for an hour was one heck of a workout with my own instructor.)

Cabo Chileno Bay

H20 Cave

The kids had their own requests for experiences in Cabo including snorkeling, playing on the beach, surfing, fishing…well everything was on their list. Thankfully the H20 Cave at Chileno Bay Resort offers guests all the water craft and activities you can imagine and even better – assistance to learn how! I didn’t know much about snorkeling, especially with my kids, so we had help to suit them up, give a quick training, take us out and even record the experience!

Spa Experience

After almost a week of enjoying the hotel, we couldn’t leave without a trip to the spa. But not for me. My son actually asked if he could get a massage. After reassuring me that my back rubs were always going to be his favorite, he wanted to see what a “real” massage was like. Thankfully, The Auberge Spa at Chileno Bay offers kids’ services including massages, facials, and more. So with a quick Facebook message to our concierge, we had an appointment. In addition to all the services available, the restorative spa offers “the ritual” to all guests that includes visiting several experiences from both a dry and wet sauna, salt inhalation room, hydrotherapy pool and natural refreshments designed to disconnect you from modern life and reconnect you to your more vibrant and vital self.

And that’s exactly how I would describe our entire experience with the Chileno Bay Resort & Residences. After such an engaging, intimate and enjoyable experience, we will not just be returning, but also look at more of the destinations included in the Auberge portfolio. From Napa to Aspen (and many more in your bucket list destinations), you know why the brand has received so many awards. More importantly to us though, they created memories and smiles to last a lifetime.

Tomorrow, March 11, the Texas House Committee on Public Education will hear HB 3. Let’s make it clear: Public money demands public accountability!

Texans have rejected vouchers since 1957—yet lawmakers are once again pushing them through with SB 2 and HB 3.

💰 Vouchers drain public school resources.
📉 They don’t improve student achievement.
❌ They aren’t about "parent choice"—private schools choose their students.
🏫 Texas parents already have school choice.

Governor Abbott is making vouchers a priority, but Texans are pushing back. Lawmakers are feeling the heat from voters who refuse to let public schools be undermined.

📲 Take 1 minute to make your voice heard NOW!

📷Jackson and Taylor are 2 of the 5.5 million reasons why Texas must keep public dollars in public schools. I was a product of public schools and had an amazing experience in a rural community with some of the best teachers. Change needs to happen, but taking away resources like these from schools is not especially when they ste already underfunded and our teachers’ morale is at an all time low. Communities work better together not when you separate them further apart.

Named after Bangkok’s legendary road of entertainment of all kinds (Sukhumvit Soi 11), it seems fitting this newly imagined destination would find its home in Arlington’s Entertainment District. Anchoring the NEW @loewsarlington, @soycowboytx (also from @bbbutchers / @berghospitality) recently swung open the curtain this summer with an opening that made heads turn at every corner of this 12,000 sq. ft. of sexy space - with 3 unique bars, patio, viewable kitchen and dining room.

To call it a “Pan Asian restaurant” doesn’t do it justice with its rich menu of fresh sushi, dim sum, caviar, truffle, lobster, waygu (all things you don’t find in the home of the margarita machine and ballpark nachos.) And if you’re looking for entertainment, just take a peek into the expansive kitchen and watch your rolls or omakase be made. The cocktail menu is just as extravagant with everything from mezcal to Japanese whisky, you’re eyes will be just as happy as your lips upon your first sip.

While we experienced live music, fashion show and more as part of the opening, the cool smoke installation and the people-watching is definitely just part of the menu at Soy Cowboy you’ll have to explore.

Food Nerd Note: SoyCowboy is on the upcoming @dfwrestaurantweek menu for just $39, so it’s a steal to take your own trip on a budget. (Make your reservation.)

Normally we’re always behind the smartphone camera, today we stepped out in front of the TV screen! The lovely folks at the new morning show Morning on Merit Street @morningonmeritstreet invited DFN for a little “roundtable” discussion about dining trends with our own Food Nerd @autumnreo / @mamachallenge and Bill Trevino of @craftandvinerestaurant CraftandVine along with hosts @dominiquesachse and @fanchonstinger for a little dishin’ on dining!

(If you’re able to take a look online, keep watching to see our new friend Pearl 🐶 and friends from @sweetpearlsicecream share their incredibly sweet story with @hungreehannah!)

✔️ And just like we shared on the show, we want to know what you think! What do you think about Table Limits on reservations? Yes restaurants should have them or no way?
