What to Do in 24 Hours: Cleburne Texas
Need a quick trip away to recharge or just get away from it all – without going too far? Cleburne Texas slows down the clock so you can enjoy the good stuff.
What to Do in 24 Hours is a series of our favorite ways to experience a city when you just have one day.
Thank you to Visit Cleburne and the entire community for making sure our 24 hour trip what we needed.
When you live in Texas you often think, “Oh, I’ve been there!” But when asked if I wanted to check out Cleburne, I realized that wasn’t the case. I didn’t have any recollection of Cleburne except a few signs to turn right if I wanted to go. But after a long hard few weeks, I needed a breather. The kids needed a breather. And anytime I can squeeze in a chance to share Texas, especially with my kids, I’m down.
I just wasn’t sure what all we were going to find to do.
What we would discover is that Cleburne, once the center of railroad hayday in the early part of the 1900s that brought many people to enjoy the city as a stop on their journey, is worth the stop still today as you see how history and fun is featured in this Texas small town.
The railroad is what really put Cleburne on the map and you’ll see testaments it’s what is worth the stop today.
Where to Stay in Cleburne
Liberty Hotel
205 S. Caddo Street
website
So without a plan in the least, we packed our bags and headed out, which is just a short drive from DFW (like less than hour.) Arriving at our lodging for the evening, we were greeted by the beauty of the Liberty Hotel. A gorgeous historic hotel built in the 1920s, the hotel was originally developed as a luxurious stop along the Santa Fe Railroad. Due to changes in technology the hotel wouldn’t survive the changes and became run down. However, in 2004 the hotel underwent a serious renovation bringing the shine back to the hotel, while integrating many of the modern conveniences guests expect today. While some say it may be haunted, the Liberty Hotel is a must for those who appreciate history when you stay in Cleburne.
Where to Eat in Cleburne
La Cima Mexican Cuisine
736 N. Main St.
website
Pulling in to Cleburne, there was not shortage of places to eat and definitely many great Tex-Mex places (believe me I asked and had tons of recommendations.) But no matter who I talked to, La Cima was always top of the list. From the apps, to the tacos and definitely the drinks, La Cima was a must! And I’m so glad we did. From the moment we walked into this casual Cleburne mainstay, we were met with smiles and ice cold margaritas. And to add another great not-to-miss dish is the Bacon-Wrapped Chicken Balls. While it doesn’t seem fitting in a Mexican restaurant, after a bite, you won’t care where it’s on the menu – as long as it’s there.
DON’T MISS: Order the Prickly Pear Margarita
Loaf n’ Dog
208 E. Chambers St. Suite E
website
When you have kids, anytime you can find a place where eating with your hands is considered a must and there are tons of things to look at while you dine is considered a super plus. So it was super fitting after a morning of museums (there are plenty), we found this little gem right off the square. Much like La Cima, everyone was smiling inside Loaf n’ Dog and the menu was full of well-recommended options with common female names. Let’s just say if you like hot dogs, this is your place (veggie included!) And they have thought of it all on this menu – and several things that aren’t hot dog-related, too including beer, wine, and the root beer float. If this place doesn’t make you happy, nothing will.
DON’T MISS: Instagram-worthy mural on the back patio or throughout the building!
Where to Go in Cleburne
Cleburne Railroaders at The Depot
1906 Brazzle Bvd.
website
Even if you aren’t a sports fan, you must plan to experience a Cleburne Railroaders Game at The Depot at Cleburne Station, May – September! We had been to several baseball games at other stadiums and had a good time, but when you go to a Cleburne Railroaders game, you are part of the fun from start to finish.
There’s something to do throughout the game for everyone – from the moment you get there from taking your photos in front of the railcar. Or head right in the entrance where there is a baseball museum sharing the history of team that begins.
There are fun promos for every game, so no one goes home without something fun to remember the game – but you don’t even need it as you’ll be smiling at the photos you took! From their mascot, Spike, taking the time to meet everyone, rolling on The Berm (the open seating on the grassy knoll at the stadium), or just the serious baseball grub like the funnel cake fries or the Desert Pear Lemonade! And when you catch a foul ball like my daughter did that night, you have a fan for life!
DON’T MISS: The owner of the Railroaders or the Cleburne mayor cheering their team on amongst the fans!
What to Do in Cleburne
To begin – 24 hours in Cleburne is not enough! There was so much to do and see, we really didn’t have a chance to do everything we wanted as long as we wanted. The Layland Museum alone at activities to take you throughout the community so that you could win prizes for all your fun as you learned about art, history and Cleburne. And considering Gone with the WInd is my favorite movie of all time, I could’ve spent a day reading about each costume, doll or special edition print of the legendary novel. So I’d definitely suggest taking time to enjoy each of these with a little more time, especially considering who is traveling with you!
Chisholm Trail Outdoor Museum
101 Chisholm Trail
website
You literally can’t miss this the Chisholm Trail as it comes to life with the entrance of metal work of cattle as you enter the gates. This duo of museums found outside of Cleburne (actually icalled Wardville) was a wonderful walk (literally) through the hand-on history of the old west. From the schoolhouse, church, jail, stagecoach and even a real-life working blacksmith is available to see and in some cases even experience. The wonderful volunteers can guide you through history and help you appreciate how things really were along the Chisholm Trail.
DON’T MISS: During November, the public is invited to Pioneer Days by dressing up and really being a part of the cattle drive experience with food, fun and more. AND you can also receive real school credit by having class inside the school house the same way they did then with a teacher for a very small fee (like $7 for a full day with a minimum number of students.)
Big Bear Native American Museum
Also on site of the Chisholm Trail Outdoor Museum, see an excellent collection of Native American artifacts in the Big Bear Native American Museum. Opened in 2015 by Leonard “Big Bear” Beal, the “wigwam” was part of his vision of educating the public, additional artifacts supplement his collection to provide a complete overview of Native Americans in North America from their arrival over 13,000 years ago to the present.
DON’T MISS: The scavenger hunt designed for children to learn as they experience the museum and receive a very special handmade gift.
Gone with the Wind Remembered Museum
305 E. 2nd St.
website
Contrary to Rhett’s famous words, this is a place that I gave a damn. I was so excited to learn that one one of the most comprehensive and extensive collections of GWTW memorabilia in the world was so close to home (another one I’ve visited is in Georgia ) An avid collector, Vicky Lynn Rogers created the museum through her 30 years of collecting original one-of-a-kind pieces and replicas as well as items that are extremely rare. There’s a little theatre to watch the film as well as tons of history to take in like the many published editions of the book that’s been printed in 43 languages and in 53 countries.
DON’T MISS: One of the most iconic costume pieces from the movie, the mourning bonnet worn by Scarlett O’Hara.
Layland Museum of History
201. N. Caddo Street
website
This museum is quite gorgeous from the outside in. Gift in 1963 from a local businessman, William J. Layland, the museum “strives to collect, preserve, and interpret objects and archival materials of regional home and local life.” For my kids this meant seeing radio of the 50s, radial phone and several things that even in my lifetime are long gone. While we were there, each space gave the kids a hands-on activity to understand a technique, a historical lesson or art expressed in the museum. But it was on the second floor, where the theatre is found, that the kids were able to take the stage and let their real creative fly!
DON’T MISS: A Scavenger Hunt activity can be found at the front desk that gives kids tons of activities to do throughout Cleburne.
Cleburne Railroad Museum
206 N. Main St.
website
When my son was a toddler (not so long ago), he loved everything about trains. We sang about trains, we dressed like trains, we built trains, and of course, we rode trains. So it would go without saying that we would definitely visit the railroad museum. The museum is small, but its contents are rich with heirloom pieces of uniforms, history about the people who worked them, samples of what you’d experience on the train, and best of all, a working mini train set complete with a conductor (an incredible volunteer that shares his time bringing history to life by teaching kids about trains and running the track.)
DON’T MISS: Make sure you visit this free museum when Conductor Bob is there to greet you!
So this goes to show you that every place you see a sign that drive by all the time but don’t every turn, one day it’s worth the time to see where it takes you…especially in Texas.
Thank you so much to the Cleburne CVB / Visit Cleburne for sharing Cleburne Texas with us!

Kids and Cops
Kids and Cops: Knowing and having a good relationship with your local police is important for growing up and living in the community.
Thank you for the event invitation and this sponsored post McDonald’s of North Texas.
“Stop it!…or that cop will get you!” I had muttered to my daughter one day as she didn’t listen to my instructions while attending a public event.
The officer that was within earshot distance and I had smiled at as I said the threat to my daughter had grinned, but later let me in on a little secret. He told me, while they loved the respect taught to police, but that having the kids be “afraid” of them made it harder to be help them in times of need.
The little nugget sat with me for a moment and made so much sense. Why would I try to villainize the people who are supposed to help protect my family and my kids?
That’s why more than ever having a direct relationship with your police department is so important.
Recently, the Plano, Longview, and Fort Worth Police Departments each partnered with their local McDonalds of North Texas for a special family-focused event, Cones with Cops. Cones with Cops is new initiative with McDonald’s of North Texas and Plano, Fort Worth and Longview Police Departments to boost officer and community relations by providing families with the opportunity to interact with Police Officers working in their neighborhood. Officers of all levels – including Sergeants, Deputy Chiefs and Neighborhood Patrol Officers – talk with families to answer questions, discuss public safety and build relationships with those they serve.
The public was invited to meet members of their local police department and emergency teams as well as enroll children in a special safety program by the neighborhood watch groups. The program keeps a file of children’s photo with some personal details so in the event your child is lost and also issues a personal identification card with the child’s info to share with authorities. And of course, ice cream cones were shared by the officers as children were able to explore a police vehicle, take photos with the officers, and get safety information collected in the mobile unit.
Many families lined up for the special event, including a few young police-officers-in-the-making lined up to have the opportunity to see their heroes in action. And of course, like clockwork, members of the fire department also on site had to make an emergency exit for a reported incident, making for a special experience for those in the parking lot of their friendly McDonald’s to hear the siren go on while the fire engine left the lot.
And of course, after all that hard work, we couldn’t complete the day without having a Happy Meal break and a little trip around the world with the limited-time only cheese fries and the Chicken Tomato Mozzarella sandwich (The world wide menu is where it’s at!)
This event, along with several other community events and programs, are presented by McDonalds of North Texas, is designed to create an ongoing dialog with customers as a community destination for not just food, but the things we all share like police, playdates, and family time.
Now, of course, I’m not saying every group doesn’t have issues or that there aren’t cases of when people in this line of work haven’t deviated from the protocol, but what I can attest is that the first step in creating stronger, healthier and more meaningful communities starts with communication – and a little ice cream doesn’t hurt either.
COPYCAT Blue Bell Homemade Vanilla Ice Cream Recipe
Nothing is better than Blue Bell homemade vanilla ice cream. And we have a copycat recipe that tastes just like Blue Bell at home and tips to for making the best ice cream.
There’s nothing more Texan than a big bowl of homemade vanilla ice cream straight from Brenham’s Blue Bell Creameries in the middle of July. However, you often hear when someone moves up north, the sweet taste of BB is no where to be found (and everything fails in comparison.)
So in times like these (or during a little shortage catastrophe), I’ve worked to create the best version I could of the real thing using a simple and easy ice cream maker. Don’t believe me that it’s possible?
Make it yourself, take a bite and tell me I’m wrong. (Really, I want you to!)
Never made homemade ice cream before? Think it takes tons of work? You’re wrong! You just need a few tips and an ice cream maker. Of course, there’s tons of ice cream makers out there – you just need to find the right one for you! Check out my review of several on Good Morning Texas.
While I created my recipe for Bluebell Homemade Vanilla Ice Cream with the old school Hamilton ice maker (no switch is even on this baby), there are other ways to create a creamy treat – even some without using dairy! Take a look at these gadgets – especially the fun ones that have you take an active roll is making you scream for your ice cream.

Girlfriend’s Guide to Grilling a Steak
Love the idea of grilling, but think it’s too complicated? We’re sharing the basics you need to get your grill on with our Girlfriend’s Guide to Grilling a Steak!
Thank you to Market Street for helping all of us girls (and guys) get our grill on with this sponsored post.
Isn’t it funny that so many mamas take on the world (literally) every day, but when it comes to grilling think it’s too hard or should be left to the guys?
Just answer me this: Do you like the idea of biting into a juicy, sizzling steak? Do you like to entertain? Want to make a special meal for your special someone? Then you need to know how to grill a steak.
…But don’t worry, it’s not near as hard as you think it is. Now don’t get me wrong, grilling is just as much an art and a science as it is skill. I have the utmost for those that have mastered it, but we don’t have to be the best to have a really good steak dinner. And before you get any further down, here’s your real disclaimer: Grilling is subjective and everyone does it different.
However, we’re gonna give you the absolute basics to get your first steak from purchase to plate without much work, hassle, or slaving over a grill for hours. (Besides, who has time for that!)
Girlfriend’s Guide to Grilling a Steak
1) It’s all in the meat.
No matter what marinade you use, what you cook it on, or what you pair with it, you need to pick a great piece of steak. I honestly didn’t have a clue except that there was steak and there was hamburger meat. So off to Market Street I went to figure it all out when the butcher came out to help me (he must have seen the scare in my eyes!) He explained the cuts of meat so I knew what I was looking at and how best to cook it.
There are three basic classes you should know when it comes to your beef: Prime (best), Choice (better) and Select (good.)
When it comes to flavor, it’s all in the marbling or the little white flecks in beef – is key to flavor. The higher the amount of marbling, the higher the quality of beef.
When it comes to the meat, Rancher’s Reserve is always a great choice with 100% Angus beef that is juicy, tender and full of flavor.
Now for the fun stuff, the cuts! These four steaks all come from the same general area of the cow – the short loin, tenderloin, and the ribs.
TENDERLOIN // aka filet mignon / Boneless cut from the short loin and sirloin. / Most tender and most expensive cut of steak.
T-BONE // aka Porterhouse / Bone in cross section of the unfilleted short loin with combo of f tenderloin and NY strip. / Great taste but difficult to cook with two different cuts.
NY STRIP // Boneless & sometimes bone-in short loin behind the ribs. / Fine grained texture with some marbling.
RIBEYE // aka Delmonico /Boneless & bone-in cut from the rib cage. / Lots of marbling and fat pockets for the juiciest flavor.
The Ribeye is by far the best choice for new grillers. It’s more tender than the other cuts of beef and has lots of marbling, which means lots of juicy flavor!
When it comes to the cut, you’ll want to aim for 1 1/4 inch – 1 1/2 inch cut.
Don’t see any in the case? Then ask your butcher to assist you! Market Street will cut it to your specifications!
2) Season and Sit it Out.
Alrighty…this is where there are all kinds of opinions on the best way to make your steak taste perfect. What you put on it, how long you let it sit on the steak and how long you choose to put the steak in the fridge or at room temperatures varies as much as there are different opinions on how best to soothe a crying baby. There’s been tons of research, experiments, and lots of hot-headed opinions but for this first-timer’s steak: we’re keeping it basic. You’ll find your own way after you do it for the first time.
Take your steak out of the fridge at least thirty minutes before you plan to cook your steak. Pat your steak with a paper towel.
Add LOTS of kosher salt and fresh ground pepper to both sides (it’s going to seem excessive, but this will add the simple seasoning your steak needs. (Put it in your palm and let it fly!)
Let the steak sit at room temperature for around half an hour.
3) Get your Grill Going.
The biggest question here is: How are you planning to cook this thing!
Gas: By far the easiest way way to grill is on a gas grill. Turn on the tank, turn the burner, ignite, and close the lid for around 10 minutes when the grill hits around 425-450 degrees. Now you’re ready to roll!
Is it time to cook? Hold your hand about about four to six inches above the grill grate, palm down. If you can hold it one to three seconds before you need to pull your hand away, you’re at high heat.
Charcoal: Yes, you’re going to have to light it up! Starting with a clean grill like this one, lay your self-starting charcoal (it has lighter fluid in the briquettes so you don’t have to deal with it) in a grid pattern. Then light each corner and let it go! Close the grill and either using a thermometer or the hand method (see above), wait until the charcoal has lost its flame and beginning to turn gray.
Pan-fry: It never seems to fail that you make plans to grill and Mother Nature makes another plan! When you’re in a rush or weather doesn’t permit outdoor grilling, go with the iron skillet! Just put it on high and let it go (I also like to add a little oil and butter to the pan for even more flavor!)
4) Let’s Get Cooking.
Alright, Alright, Alright! We’ve reached the big show!
If you’re making your steaks on the grill, then you’re going to wait to cook your steaks until they get to your specific level of doneness.
Rare // 120 degrees Medium Rare // 130 degrees Medium // 140 degrees
Medium Well // 150 degrees Well Done // 160 degrees
You can also use the finger test, but this isn’t always accurate as using this.
5) Dinner is Done.
To cut or to sit out, that is the question! One of the biggest controversies (yes, it’s that big of a deal) is whether you need to let your steak sit before serving. While there is all kinds of rationales for why you should and why you shouldn’t, but for me it’s simple: If you wait about 5 minutes after you take it off the heat, there’s less juice therefore less mess. So that’s my win-win.
Now let’s eat!
Review of The Lightning Thief: The Percy Jackson Musical
Whether you know every word of Percy Jackson or just know it’s a book, The Lightning Thief: The Percy Jackson Musical is great show for the family and helps to open up difficult conversations.
Thank you to AT&T Performing Arts for sharing the arts in North Texas and this sponsored post.
First off: I’ve never read a Percy Jackson book in my life.
However, I have a truly committed fan in my 10-year-old son who has spoken non-stop about Percy and Greek mythology for months.

Photo: Jeremy Daniel
While he has always been my date/co-host for many movies, events, and even TV shows, we haven’t had a chance to spend as much time together…because growing up often means growing apart from your parents. At least in my two experiences (first as a kid and now as a parent.) Now we haven’t had any fights or issues, but he has interests outside of me and the ones I’ve presented and is beginning to cultivate his own personality. PLUS I’d be remiss to not mention just a few weeks ago he got to see “the movie” at school (you know the one where all the boys and girls are split into two rooms?)

So needless to say, it’s been a heck of a few months talking about the topics that honestly all parents and kids dread. So when The Lightning Thief: The Percy Jackson Musical came across the schedule at AT&T Performing Arts, I had a feeling it was time for the boy and I to have some time together. To do something he enjoyed and let him take the reigns as the expert. And that he did – and much more.
“See there’s a kid, Percy, he’s a half-blood, so he’s the son of…” he began.

Photo: Jeremy Daniel
About the Show
Anyone who does know Percy knows there’s nothing simple about the storyline (hence the very large novels in the library.) But even with the complex story, I would soon find during the musical (which should be noted is taken from the BOOK and not the MOVIE), would transcend into a myriad of starter topics of several conversations I’ve either wanted or have thought about talking with my kid about for months. And the cast just put it out there…easy for me to pick up and take home for later. And of course, many other opportunities to laugh, sometimes because I did and sometimes because I could see how tickled it made my son.

While I won’t put any spoilers in here (at least I don’t think), I will share that the story begins where Percy goes to Camp Half-blood, a place for those children of the gods to be protected and to learn their skills among each other. So like many coming-of-age stories, you have characters with different backgrounds all trying to find their way in the “odyssey” of life. The cast of The Lightning Thief is very small, but that doesn’t limit the number of very unique and interested characters you’ll meet along the show (including one from North Texas.) However actor Ryan Knowles (who plays Chiron and many other characters) is what kept me laughing throughout the show from start to finish.
What to Expect
Like the cast, the set isn’t overly complicated with a simple backdrop that is used throughout the show. But honestly, with heavy discussions about dyslexia, ADHD, feeling alone, etc., you don’t need all the other stuff to cover it up. And the “interesting” props and light effects do make a big impact on advancing the show. While only a few “light” curse words were uttered at all through the musical, I feel like there were some parts (mostly when the entrance of two big characters appear) that are a little less appropriate for the littles, but only if they scare easily. Some sword action also adds to a little bit of violence in the story, but honestly, we’re talking Greek gods, so this isn’t doesn’t hold a candle to any of those books we read in school at this age.

Photo: Jeremy Daniel
What Did We Think
As for my son’s review of the show, I was able to capture him to give his thoughts right after the show. But to say it in his words, “It was awesome.” (He goes into more in his Instastories.) “…It speaks for itself.” When asked how many thumbs he says – “27 thumbs up.”
But for this mom, what I appreciated more was our ride home. All of a sudden in talking about the show, he seemed so at ease about discussing things on his mind and some of those more “difficult” topics, just began to flow. And while I don’t expect every conversation from here on out to be as easy, it was great to be able to able to have Percy Jackson as a platform for us to talk, learn and share together.
A few notes: if you haven’t read the book, it’s ok, you’ll still be able to enjoy the story. If you have read the books and/or enjoy mythology, you’ll like this musical in a different way. If you don’t like musicals, well, it’s a musical, but it’s got some great acting and fun plot lines that make it enjoyable between the show.
The Lightning Thief: The Percy Jackson Musical is at AT&T Performing Arts from now – May 26 at the Margot and Bill Winspear Opera House. Get 25% off tickets to “The Lightning Thief ” with THIS SPECIAL OFFER!
Changing Face of Arlington: New Places to Visit in Arlington
Think Arlington is nothing but ball games and bumper cars? Actually this once-called suburb is literally in the middle of it all. Here’s our guide to some of our favorite Must-Go Places to Go in Arlington.
This is part of a #mamachallenge sponsored series to show that class, convenience and community come together perfectly at Park Place Motorcars Arlington.
When I moved to Arlington over 15 years ago I had only two things on my mind: how close was it to the airport and that a drive down Green Oaks faintly reminded me of the hill country. So I got a apartment as a temporary plan until I figured out where I wanted to live for real.
And then I never left.
I admit Arlington has undergone some serious changes. I always loved that the Ballpark was here and Six Flags Over Texas was just out my front door (literally), but the times have changed. What used to seem like an escape from the big cities of Dallas and Fort Worth, we now have some of the coolest spots in DFW to go…and right here in A-Town. So now when people come to town or even those Arlingtonians that haven’t had a chance to try them out, I feel like I have to give them a run down of where to go.
Disclaimer: this list isn’t the full run down of everything you need to go when you’re Arlington, Texas. Consider it your starter list of what’s in North and Downtown Arlington…And there are more popping up everyday and many that will open their doors soon. So until you get to chow down on Hurtado BBQ at Urban Union next spring or lay by the pool at the new ultra-luxe Live! by Loews hotel this summer, get ready for fun in Arlington.
New Must-Go Places to Go in Arlington
Texas Live!
Head to the Entertainment District and you can’t miss this one! Right in the middle of AT&T Stadium (aka Dallas Cowboys home turf/Jerry World/The Death Star) and Texas Rangers Globe Life Park (and the new Globe Life Field in 2020) is Texas Live! Y’all 200,000 sq. ft. of food, entertainment, live music, games and more, all parties begin and end here. With 10 concepts, including a huge PBR Cowboy Bar, Guy Fieri’s Taco Joint, and two different eateries from legendary sports stars Dallas Cowboys Troy Aikman (Troy’s – known for it’s big ass burgers and margaritas) and Texas Rangers Pudge Rodriguez (Pudge’s Pizza.)
Candlelite Inn Restaurant
Since 1957 the Candlelite Inn Restaurant has been a mainstay in Arlington. Serving pizza, Tex-Mex and steak, this “eclectic” destination has many other claims to fame including its Guacamole Salad. So close to AT&T Stadium this gem should never be overlooked to host your own small party any day of the week especially with its schedule of live music.
Arlington Museum of Art
Yes, we have an art museum in Arlington. While it does house some cool exhibits, it’s also the site to some rather cool events like yoga and kids’ art camps. Plus you can rent space for your own event including a rooftop deck that looks over Arlington (yes, it’s pretty cool.) And don’t forget to catch the artwork on the outside too – including one of the cool “The Star of Texas” installations and this mural completed by KABOO.
{website}
Actually there are several murals throughout Downtown Arlington, so take your town when you ’round the corner because you’ll never know where you’ll find them (like this one at Urban Union!)
Urban Union
While Urban Union is technically at development, I like to call it a neighborhood of unique businesses all geared to making your life better and more enjoyable. There’s food (lots of food), there’s drink (there’s lots of drink), there’s art, there’s business, and there’s exercise – all in an renovated, pedestrian-friendly space found between Division and Abram.
Legal Draft
Anchored by Legal Draft Beer Co., if you officially are trying to find where the locals hangout when the tourists come to town, this is it. A true, working craft brewery by a former lawyer and a former medical logistics pro, Legal Draft has become the home of city events, family reunions, art projects, and everything in between. Not to mention the beer is legitimately really good, with several on tap and available seasonally. And the little ones (or DDs) can enjoy the mootbeer (one of several puns you’ll find inside this legal-industry space.)

The Tipsy Oak
Just as the name implies, there are trees here. And upon occasion, you may find yourself celebrating with a few adult refreshments while trying to land a respectable score of cornhole. I gotta admit, I somehow always find myself here. If the short rib grilled cheese isn’t enough to drive you to this “little cabin in the woods,” the bloody mary will. It’s actually not a bloody mary, but more of a cocktail and a meal in one with a thick slice of chicken fried bacon. MMM. Go for the poutine, too. Just remember if you do enjoy yourself, Uber is just a short click away.

Sugar Bee Sweets Bakery
This sweet spot may sound familiar as it was featured on the Cooking Channel. And one time inside this bakery and breakfast spot will help you see why you can never say no. Everything is almost too beautiful to eat, but one small nibble and you won’t be able to stop. From beautiful multi-tiered wedding cakes to cookies, cupcakes, scones, and more, Sugar Bees will keep that sweet tooth full. Thankfully they serve coffee too so you break between treats.

4 Kahunas Tiki Bar
Ever been to a tiki bar? It’s an experience in itself. This nationally recognized lounge is full of fun and surprises as these just aren’t drinks, but entertainment each time you order one with fire, flowers, fruit and more taking the limelight as its crafted by the mixologists that make them. Want to fire up a party – this is it. Need to get the flame burning? One or two of these will do it for you with juices, exotic flavors and liquors. (Remember, there’s a reason they call it a “Painkiller.”) But remember to keep the kids at home because this is a 21 year old and up. (And you can head next door to Cartel Taco Bar for some great tacos and queso before or after a stop here.)

New Way to Ride: Mercedes Benz A-Class
Lord doesn’t need to buy you a Mercedes Benz, you can now do it yourself. Get to the front of the class with the NEW Mercedes Benz A-Class at Park Place Arlington.
This is part of a #mamachallenge sponsored series to show that class, convenience and community come together perfectly at Park Place Motorcars Arlington.
Who wouldn’t want to drive a Mercedes Benz?
Actually, I can answer that for you…
There are basically two camps: those that don’t think they can afford it and those who can’t get over the dial vs. a touch screen interface.
I actually was both.
While I loved the idea of a Mercedes, it was only likely if I won the lottery or opted for my mortgage not to be paid for a few months:). Plus, trying to command everything inside the car from the radio to the A/C from on singular dial, was too much for my patience (and my dexterity to handle). A part of the ieverything generation, I wanted to touch the screen and it responds just like that.

However, until last month I didn’t think that both of these hurdles that kept me from my dream car would no longer reign true until the new Mercedes Benz A-Class rolled into town.
The New Face of Mercedes Benz: The A-Class
A new series to the American fleet, the A-Class is now first in line of the Mercedes brand. A four-door sedan works hard, plays hard and looks a lot like its predecessors at a more affordable price point. That’s not just compared among Mercedes, but also compared to many other car brands considered less luxury and more “reasonable cars.”
…Sounded dreamy…until I got inside.
That’s when I literally let out a school-girl, Taylor-Swift-style-shrill as I slid behind that soft, rich dark interior. I was in a Mercedes AND there was a huge touchscreen dashboard that I could touch with my index finger and magic happened.
Then it went next level.
Especially a new friend that comes with the car…perfectly named – what else? Mercedes. And she does whatever you need her too! Unlike those other unnamed auto assistants, you talked to this gal more like a friend and a lot less like a machine.
More Reasons to Love the Mercedes Benz A-Class
Described as “a new mobile device that’ll really move you,” the A-class is top of the class in many areas and in some ways I wonder if Mercedes has actually given some of us a reason to choose this automobile versus some of its other lineups. (I’m okay with that, right?)
Outfitted with the new Mercedes-Benz User Experience (MBUX), the A-Class is the first to give you the tech you want including intuitive speech that learns you for a truly customized ride every time you get behind the wheel (and even for your passengers too.
But of course there’s more:
- With ever-changing “seat kinetics” the A-class sedan is always modifying how your fit to ensure you’re comfortable but also riding at the optimum driving position.
- With wireless charging for your phone and five (count that) USB ports in the front and back of the car, everyone has a place to plug in.
- Need help parking? Yep, press the button and roll in VIP style with a multi-camera Surround View System with hands-free Active Parking Assist
- Yes, there’s an APP for that – and the app for this baby keeps it all in check. From keeping up with updates, autostart, unlock/lock and much more, you can work your car from your fingertips.
The best part – When it comes to performance, the A-class stands for “athletic, agile and active.” With turbo power, seven speeds, Dynamic Select four drive modes, and three suspension options, the A 220 and all-wheel-drive A 220 4MATIC Sedans turn 188 horses and 221 lb-ft of torque into rapid response and full-time fun.
And yes, all that starting at $32,500?
You’ll also be surprised with the new A Class. Not like “oh, that’s nice” surprised, but “drop your mouth and do a double take” kinda-surprised.
Just connect with Park Place Arlington to take a look for yourself. And while you’re there, check out the PRE-OWNED area, too.
While I personally love me Benz, you can take off in Land Rover, Lexus or other favorite cars from Park Place. The advantage of that is you get all the benefits of Park Place service and experience and in a car that you love that works with your budget.

How to Buy a Car the Smart Way
In the market to buy car? At some point most of us are, so learn How to Buy a Car the Smart Way.
This is part of a #mamachallenge sponsored series to show that class, convenience and community come together perfectly at Park Place Motorcars Arlington.
I remember the first time I bought a car by myself. I didn’t realize at all what I was doing, but I felt that I needed to be strong and hopefully not get charged a crazy amount. Of course this was before I had a family, advanced technology and GPS entered the market, and there were so many resources so we could do some homework.
Thankfully, the situation turned out ok, but I’ll be honest there are so many things I could’ve done better and have learned since then to do and not to do when it comes to buying a car. And believe me – it’s not just about the car when it comes to making the best choice for your auto purchase…it’s also about the entire experience (and paying for it) that is important. With all your life-changing scenarios and needs, it’s important to reassess the process. So learn from this mama how to buy a car the smart way.
Let’s break it down to basics.
Define Your Need
To me this is the most important part and should be done before you even start looking at a car. If you can narrow down what you need vs. what you want early in the process, the rest of the other steps are a walk in the park. Depending on where you are in your life, you could have very specific needs (like lots of room for your little people) and perhaps you could really crave a car that looks good and drives fast.
So ask yourself these questions:
Size:
What size do you need? Who is going to be in this car and how is it going to be used?
Budget:
How much do you want to pay for a car and be comfortable with the amount (remember, there’s maintenance, insurance, etc. to consider as well?)
A rule of thumb is to spend around 20% or less of your take home pay on a car. However, that’s not always feasible for everyone depending on what expenses you have to manage. If you have kids, you know what I mean.
If you have a trade-in, that definitely changes the bottom line as well depending on what it is you have to pay. When you look at sealing the deal (see step below), you should know the value of your car by also doing some research (but take into consideration what condition your car is in, so you don’t always get the price it says.)
A rule of thumb is to spend around 20% or less of your take home pay on a car. However, that’s not always feasible for everyone depending on what expenses you have to manage.
Dealbreakers:
These are the things you NEED to have in the car like – needs to have four doors vs. two, must have lots of truck space, has GPS, is small so you can park it, etc.
Nice-to-Haves:
This is the WANT part – like the car needs to hav a sunroof, needs Apple Car Play, etc.
Then you have the hard part of prioritizing what you think is the most important thing to you (and these might change, too.)
If you noticed I didn’t ask two big questions here – do you want to buy new or pre-owned AND buy vs. lease. I personally think most people have a biased against both and a preconceived notion on how they work (often you replicate the buying tendency of your parents in this area.) Honestly, there are benefits and challenges to both.
A little note here: A lot of places will tell you to start looking at cars first. The reason I suggest you take the time to define your need is a lot like buying a house. After you start looking at several models, you’re willing to change what you need and what you’ll pay once you see what’s out there. And two things will happen: you’ll either settle for the most inexpensive version because you don’t want to pay much and therefore buy a car that ultimately won’t make you happy OR you’ll buy too much car and every month have to work at making the payment.
When you do the work you’ll be able to find a car that you’ll love and can afford (and yes, you can find that!)
Research
Now this is where you get to have some fun. This is the part of the process that you can get online, ask questions and research away. Once you’ve pegged down what you need (and what’s the icing on the cake), start seeing what’s out there. Visit a car show, get to Google, and ask your friends (they’ve already done some of the work for you so ask them what they like about their car and what they don’t.) Now what you find at this point doesn’t mean that they are your only options, but they give you an idea of what you’re realistically looking for and answer some of the other questions like colors, interiors, technology (this is a biggie for me.)
What I can’t just head to the dealership and start buying a car?
You absolutely can! But I’d at least have your needs, wants and how much you can pay in mind when you go. However, if money is you have huge deal breaker for you, you might need to look at your finances first (see next step below.) However, if there’s a range, you might be surprised by what you’ll find out you like vs. not like in a car when you go shopping. Your sales representative (mine is Ken and he’s amazing) is going to ask you what you’re looking for, so having your needs / wants list already set is so helpful, so they can really target what you needs vs. you having too much fun spending time driving a car you know you won’t buy in the long run (and wasting time!)
Which leads me to an even more important question: Where should you buy your car?
There are many options available to how and where to buy a car, but make sure to do your homework services like online-only car sales. While I know it’s an option for some, for me, I want a person to talk to about the car, to show me how it works (I once spent :30 minutes once trying to figure out how to open the hood), and a physical place to go when there’s a problem. That’s a dealership.
Dealerships
When choosing a dealership, you need to a little work there, too. It’s not just what’s closest or where you bought your last car that is an option. Some dealerships are much more invested in service than just being a place that sells cars. Many of them take great pride in the process of having a car, the customers that buy them, and hopefully, that you’re a client for life.
For example at Park Place Dealerships (which has 24 locations throughout DFW), #MyParkPlace is an entire campaign showing clients that not only have bought a car with Park Place, but have bought multiple cars for many years because of their exceptional service. From the moment you head to the door, there’s someone available to show you cars or if you prefer, lets you peruse the lot. And if you’re the kind of person that wants to do as much as much as possible online before you even visit the dealership, you can work with the Internet Sales Manager who can help you through the whole process online until it’s time to pick up the car!
But there are some other really good reasons to head to Park Place Motorcars especially the one I visit in Arlington.
Just take a look in their Customer Service Area and you’ll see what looks like the most beautiful coffee shop, sports bar, and even a space for the kids. With beverages available, plentiful seating options, TVs (just count how many), and free WiFi, you can get your car washed and maintenanced in the ultimate comfortable setting. I know from my own experiences, that is not normally the case at other dealerships, waiting for eight hours in a loud, cramped service center. I admit in my experience at Park Place, I actually waited a few minutes after my car was done because I didn’t want to leave and I was getting work done. But on days you can’t wait, Park Place customers also get access to loaner vehicles when they get services.
Paying for It
Okay no one wants to have this conversation, right? It’s the more adult part of the car-buying process…how are you going to pay for it?
First, be real with yourself. Know your credit score and where you sit with your finances. Then consider pre-financing. Whether than pick a car and wait to see if you can pay for it – you can get online and begin the process NOW so you know what you can pay before you start. Park Place Arlington has an online option so it’s quick and easy, but if you prefer, there are other options available like our bank / credit union, Lending Tree, etc. that can walk you through your process.
In the case you need a co-signer/co-buyer, do them a courtesy and ask BEFORE you are ready to sign on a car. Give them the opportunity to make a decision that’s good for them as well in a reasonable time AND that they can also see their finances are also in order. Plus if they know you’ve been planned out and taken the time to make your car choice, they’ll see you’re going to be responsible with their money and where their name is attached.
For me, I know my habits and I like the technology in a car so having a new car is important for the latest and greatest in tech. But for other people it’s having a specific kind of car, like a beautiful Mercedes or a Lexus that drives their leading priorities. But I’ve learned that it’s possible to have your cake and eat it too.
New / Preowned
Did you know that Park Place Arlington has both pre-owned and new cars available? So if you really have your heart set on a Land Rover, or a Ford F-150, or even that Jaguar convertible, they have it available! These pre-owned cars are Certified so that you know that they have been inspected, services, and restored to a like-new condition. And you still get the benefits of being a Park Place client.
Lease vs. Own
So do you want to own or lease? Again, there are advantages and disadvantages to both. I lease my car because I always want a newer car with the most updated technology that has a warranty, but I also need to keep my payments reasonable. My husband’s car is owned because he loves it and so he can add what he wants to it, so we do both.
Try it Out
Whatever you do, you must drive the car. Yep, take that test drive. Even if you have to have it ordered in, you need to make sure you’ve put your eyes on it and driven the car. And here’s why – I once had a car I requested in black that I literally was signing the documents on my car to purchase, but when I saw the car, I saw that the “black car” was actually navy. While somewhere on the documents it said navy, the sales rep thought it was black, too.
But that’s definitely not the only reason to test drive the car. If possible, don’t just drive it around the lot – make sure you’ve driven it on the highway, on the access road, and my favorite learning opportunity, your garage. Yes, once upon another time I bought a car that didn’t fit in my garage. Nothing is worse than realizing you bought a car that doesn’t work for you. You need the kids to get in it if you’re buying a family car including your spouse (hey, they need to fit too.) And if it’s just you and your dog, you might want to make sure they fit too!
Not only do you want to drive it, but turn on the radio, try out the trunk / back area, use the buttons – love this car.
Americans spend on average 293 hours in their car a year.
So you better like what you’re driving.
Seal the Deal
So you found it – your car! Congrats we’re almost there. There’s just a few more steps to the finish line!
Once you have the car in mind and you’re ready to take the plunge, make sure to confirm the rate and price with the lender. Also, if you have a trade-in, time to level up and see how much the dealership is willing to give you for the car so you can leverage your final payment price!
Another benefit of working with a sales representative at a dealership like Ken at Park Place Arlington is that you can discuss all the warranties, special offers, benefits of the dealership and how they work. If Roadside Assistance is part of your deal, make sure you understand how it works, how to contact them, etc.
Once you’ve settled on the price and signed the dotted line, make sure to get the lowdown on all of the following:
- Have your sales representative do show and tell! Have them show you how and set up all your technology before you leave the lot.
- Have your chair set perfect for you, get the radio set, ask how things work! This is why you have a sales rep – they’re there to help you!
- And while you’re looking at the car, make sure you know how to manage that spare tire – just in case!
Yep, it’s that easy…ha! Actually buying a car can be a great process or a horrible one, but with a little planning and help (hello, Park Place Arlington), you can be ready to hit the road in no time!
