Make it a Moment to Remember with Mimi’s NEW Menu

December 4, 2013 By Autumn Rose Reo 5 Comments

Disclaimer: I was invited as a special guest to enjoy new menu items at Mimi’s Cafe. And enjoy them, yes, I did. Read on to find out what I liked most! (All the words here are completely my own!)

Do you remember your first brunch?

I was in college I had my first “real brunch” upon a friend’s invitation. Beginning sometime after normal lunch was supposed to happen, we enjoyed 2+ hours of mimosas, muffins and omelets at Mimi’s Cafe. The friend’s treat soon became a weekend ritual, as it was a great time to catch up with each other while we devoured all the cinnamon muffins we could handle – sometimes in our slacks and many times in last-night’s blue jeans and a pony tail. Either way, our Mimi’s moments became my benchmark for what brunching was meant to be – friends, fabulous food and fun.

Fast forward ten years: things, of course, have changed.  While weekend to-dos have transitioned from brunches to babies, I still remember the fun, comfort and joy I had at Mimi’s. While I hadn’t been to Mimi’s in a long time, I was excited a few weeks ago when I received an invitation to re-experience Mimi’s.  I could only hope it would take me back to what I remembered before life was as complex as a decade of being an “adult” could be.

Just like my life had changed, I learned Mimi’s had also changed over the last decade. As with any great restaurant, it had transitioned with the times and with it, so had the experience (and not necessarily for the better). So when its new owner, Le Duff America, Inc. purchased the french casual concept this year, they felt it was time to get back to the basics of what Mimi’s Cafe had been for me and many other fans years ago – an inviting, classic French bistro.
And after months of work, dedication and tracking down many of the recipes to hard copies in the back of the file cabinet, the whole team including the very charming executive chef Executive Chef Katie Sutton (a graduate of the French Culinary Institute and previous Executive Chef at Hess Collection Winery in Napa), was ready to dust them off.

Like a good champagne, I was anxious to uncork this baby. Let the trip down memory lane commence!

First of all, the roasted tomato basil is exactly what you want on a cold day – or any day where you feel like you need a pick-me-up, this rich bisque will do the trick (and the bacon doesn’t hurt either.) I enjoyed other classic French dishes like Mimi’s Signature Bouillabaisse, Grilled Salmon Salade Niçoise, Coq au Vin and Spinach Crepe. But the Le Burger de Madame, crowned with a fried egg, was magnifique.
I’ll be honest, I don’t remember the menu tasting as good in the past as it did that night – especially this baked brie with tart apples and apricot chutney (gush).

Perhaps it was the company I was keeping (as they were all friends).

Perhaps it was the staff that seemed like they had been my friends my whole life with their pure passion and generosity.

Or perhaps it was surpassing my month’s quota of heavy cream in one sitting that made it just seem so buttery rich and perfect.

Either way, I was not only taken back to those fun days of college, but actually advanced to a new experience that still could include mimosas. However, it also reminded me that life can take you many places but at Mimi’s, you’ll always have a little bit of Paris you can revisit again and again. And even if for no other reason than for those chocolate croissants.

Just in time for the holidays:
No time for a Mimi’s moment of your own? Then bring it home with you. Or better yet, let Mimi’s create a memorable holiday experience at home with their Holiday Feast To-Go that can feed all your holiday guests – for both brunch and dinner!

Or are you looking for a personalized gift to give, but think gift cards don’t show your thoughtfulness? Mimi’s Cafe has gotten really creative with gift cards you can personalize for the holidays with voice messages and photos to really give it that personal touch!

Give Gifts They’ll Love with Help from Walgreens Holiday Gift Guide

December 2, 2013 By Autumn Rose Reo 11 Comments

Disclaimer: I am a member of the Collective Bias®  Social Fabric® Community.  This shop has been compensated as part of a social shopper amplification for Collective Bias and its advertiser.

With a Walgreens just around the corner from my house, I’m there all the time. If not to pick up the usual prescriptions or photos, I’m there to pick up any number of things including gifts! It’s like my own little secret to find last-minute Christmas gifts that are perfect for everyone including teacher gifts, neighbor gifts and co-workers. And best of all, Walgreens has all your unique wrapping needs to make your gift stand out and look like you spent hours making it look perfect!

So when work caused me to spend Thanksgiving away from my family, a long-time coworker/friend was kind enough to invite me to her home to join her family for Turkey Day. While I wasn’t able to be with my kiddos, the hospitality of her family not only made it bearable, but memorable, so I wanted to give a little token of my appreciation for allowing me to spend the day with them.

And of course, I found all kinds of other gift ideas for other people, too!

The stocking stuffers galore including a great display of Christmas socks and Christmas toiletries that anyone would love.

And I’m pretty sure I began shopping for gift wrap before I even found a gift. Aren’t these options ideal for the small things to the big items that are never easy to wrap.

And who couldn’t miss these guys – the holiday “chorus.” I just couldn’t resist myself from hearing them all sing in unison. Check out the Walgreens “Chorus!”

One of the coolest things I found was an end cap display – when you buy two bottles of wine and a package of Ghirardelli chocolate, you’ll also receive a free festive red cardboard basket that’s perfect for gift giving, and all for a reasonable price!

Trying to narrow down the options, I remembered while I was visiting with the family they mentioned that they were having a cooking decorating competition and it would be the last one before her son went to college. So when I saw this Ninja Gingerbread Cookie Kit in the holiday aisle, I just had to have it. Since I’m an apron fanatic, I thought adding a Santa apron would be a way to give signature gift from me. And to wrap it up just right, I found this adorable ceramic Santa cookie tray to use as part of the gift wrap AND as part of the gift.

Using the red ribbon and these sparkly mitten nametags that almost could be double as pot holders for my culinary-themed gift, I put together a sophisticated gift that I’m so excited to give.

Walgreens always has the right thing you are looking for and the unique gift wrapping options from quick-and-easy to beautiful and personalized. Make Walgreens part of your holiday shopping this year and don’t forget to sign up as a FREE Walgreens Balance Rewards member! Not only do you get discounts on thousands of items, but you also get money back! It only takes a minute to sign up and you can save even more money just for shopping!

Happy Holidays and Happy Shopping at Walgreens!

November 27, 2013 By Autumn Rose Reo 1 Comment

After you’ve hit Pumpkin Pie coma, dad has OD’d game and the kids have caught cabin fever, it’s time to get out of the house for a little post-Turkey Day time.

Here are a few unique ideas for family fun in Dallas that doesn’t take too much time or planning to get the holiday happiness flowing!

Get to the Ice to Meet Missile Toes, the back-flipping, pyrotechnic ice-skating Santa at Galleria Dallas

And if you try real hard, you probably can even get a little shopping checked off your list, too! If you just can’t get out of the house on Thanksgiving then venture out on Friday at noon when Galleria Dallas debuts the first Macy’s Grand Tree Lighting Celebration of the season. World Champion and Olympic skater Kurt Browning joins cute local skaters and the legendary pyrotechnic Missile Toes countdown to the tree lighting on the ice for a 20-minute holiday extravaganza around the 95-foot-tall Christmas tree. Best of all this show is free!

Galleria Dallas has several holiday experiences for you to enjoy, so visit the full schedule at galleriadallas.com. (Disclaimer: #Client)

We are super excited to load up the car, grab our hot chocolate and turn on Michael Buble for Christmas memories you’ll enjoy for years to come.  Read more about the Prairie Lights here…
Go Nuts at the Gaylord Texan ICE display of The Nutcracker
Our family loves the Gaylord Texan at the holidays because it’s like going to a little bit of Disney – but I can be home in just 20 minutes!  Last year we really enjoyed our experience (if you’ve never been to ICE check out my 7 tips to the Perfect Ice Experience here), but we are really excited to check out the new theme, The Nutcracker! Of course, little man is all about the tubing action and some mama fun making a gingerbread house with Gingy!

Even if you aren’t a guest, you can enjoy the ICE exhibit! Hours vary for this experience, so make sure you check out the website for the specific schedule and price.
Nothing Says the Holidays than Snow with the Gift of Lights at Texas Motor Speedway
Texas Motor Speedway doesn’t do anything small and that definitely describes their holiday event, the Gift of Lights. The Snow Village at TMS features a tubing hill, snow ball gallery, and a snow play area – and finish the fun by making s’mores! Read more about the Gift of Lights…

Thanksgiving Leftovers: Turkey Tortilla Soup

November 22, 2013 By Autumn Rose Reo 172 Comments

Had turkey yesterday? Then you probably have leftovers. Here’s what to do with them with this easy Turkey Tortilla Soup.

SponsoredPostDisclaimer

Thanksgiving seemed like it was going to be a bust since I was scheduled to work all day. However, I decided that we’d just do Thanksgiving on another night with just the family.

That meant that I was doing it all by myself. From making the menu, shopping, cooking, decorating and of course, my favorite, cleaning it all up (not), Thanksgiving was going to be a solo performance.

However, I had no idea how many times my best friend PAM was going to come to my rescue.

Yep, you probably know her – she’s the reliable, zero-calorie cooking spray that you reach for when you want to make sure your food doesn’t stick to the pan…but that’s not all I learned she can do!&

Thanksgiving, I picked up my can of PAM Cooking Spray at least 10 times. From spraying the pan for the rolls, spraying the turkey to give it a little color, finishing the top of the stuffing before hitting the oven for crisp corners, giving a little mist in the food processor before chopping the pecans for the pie, and coating the skillet for the bacon-bleu cheese brussel sprouts, PAM was there for me to make sure that the meal came out picture perfect and even more important for me, easier to clean up the aftermath.

I just wished I would have sprayed my floor before my daughter decided she needed to make a pie like mama — all over my kitchen.

But the meal I really look forward to is the after-Thanksgiving leftovers. Using the turkey, several leftovers I found in the fridge, and a can of diced tomatoes and green chiles, I cooked up a Turkey Tortilla Soup that was a great way to reinvent Thanksgiving 2013. And, PAM played a starring role for this meal, too, by creating the finishing touch with homemade tortilla chips to give the soup the perfect crunch in under 3 minutes.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 7 cups of broth (use chicken broth or broth from the turkey)
  • 3 cups shredded turkey (or use what you have left!)
  • 1 Tbsp cumin
  • 2 Tbsp chopped garlic
  • 1 tsp red pepper
  • salt and pepper
  • 1 can of black beans, rinsed and drained
  • 1 can of whole kernel corn, drained
  • 1 can of diced tomatoes and green chiles like Rotel
  • (Whatever leftovers you have – carrots, onions, etc.)
  • 3–4 flour tortillas
  • PAM Cooking spray

Instructions

  1. Instructions
  2. In a large pot, boil the broth and turkey together with cumin, garlic, red pepper, salt and pepper. Season to taste. After boiling for 7 minutes, add the black beans, corn and Rotel and move to a simmer for 20 minutes or more.
  3. While the soup is cooking, prepare to the making the tortilla chips.  Spray the cooking sheet with PAM.  Then using a knife or cookie cutter, cut the tortillas into several triangles like a pie and lay them out separately on to the pan. Then spray the triangles with PAM. Place the pan in the oven on broil for 2-3 minutes until crispy and golden.

Want-it Wednesdays:

Disclaimer: I received a gift card to help promote this amazing deal for the holidays from Massage Envy DFW.

While I love receiving a gift card for just about anything, I admit I normally end up spending them on necessary things like groceries and clothes and not on the fun stuff that Christmas is meant for. (Isn’t being an adult fun!?!)

That’s why we get you something that you are forced to enjoy like manicures, clothes and massages, you can’t feel guilty about just appreciating a gift, right? It would rude to waste it.

Now take a look at that Christmas list and see who could benefit from one hour of stress-free attention to work out those knots…I know everyone on my list would (and it’s a BIG list!) Then get the best reward by scoring a massage for yourself by just giving to others!

Emeals Meal Planning Makes it Easy to Save Time and Money (Even at the Holidays) {Discount} {Recipe}

November 14, 2013 By Autumn Rose Reo Leave a Comment

Disclaimer: The post includes affiliate links. The opinions and comments here are all my own. I am acting in accordance with FTC guidelines.

Unlike most moms I know, I actually LOVE to go to the grocery store. I like to peruse the aisle, dream of what meals to make and just get my hands on fresh vegetables, meats and just enjoy food at its best. Unfortunately, time doesn’t really allow for a two-hour trip for fun and certainly not the full list of necessary family things I have to buy before I enjoy my time. So I end up running in the store with 45 minutes to pick up $200 of groceries just to get home and not have anything to make for dinner.

And at the holidays? I am that person running in the store at the nth hour throwing things in the cart and returning five more times before I get Thanksgiving on the table. At that point, I’m not so in love with the grocery store and I spent way more than the budget allows.

However, I just had found out there’s a better option for all this poor planning AND I can even save money in the long run with emeals. Recommended by budget guru Dave Ramsey, emeals sends you an email once a week a list of groceries and menus to make things easier (and cheaper) for you when you go to the grocery store. Basically, emeals takes all the work out of the work of going to the grocery store and allows me to enjoy it again.

Save 30% on all meal plans with code CYBER

On a special diet or eating plan? No problem. They have choices based on your changing diet. From Paleo, Slow Cooker, or just Clean Eating – emeals has it covered. I appreciate having my time and money back by using emeals for all our meals – breakfast through dinner. And the holidays aren’t an exclusion either! Right now you can get a full holiday plan for free when you sign up with 15% discount to boot when you use this link.

Can you imagine making Thankgsiving dinner easy and with one trip to the store? Or are you still trying to stay on a healthy plan without sacrificing Thanksgiving tradition? Just check out this recipe for clean eating Toasted Pecan Tart by emeals. (I can smell warm pecan pie baking as I think about it.)

With all these options, emeals is a great choice for moms and dads looking to save time and money so they can spend it in the places it really counts. Unless you enjoy spending hours couponing and recipe planning, then emeals is definitely worth considering when you are looking to solve one of mama’s biggest challenges.

While it seems you’ve got everything complete – from costumes to candy – here’s a last-minute touch to get ready for trick-or-treat fun.
It’s the soundtrack!

When you have little ones, you really can’t play Tubular Bells (the worst Halloween song EVER), screaming girl or squeaky door sounds – well not too much at least. Believe me, you’ll regret it when you do when you wake up in the middle of the night with them screaming of bad dreams. So you compromise.

Forget princesses, this Disney-inspired playlist from Rdio, the ad-free online subscription service, is all about Disney villains.

So click play and get the party started just the way Disney wants you to.

Halloween Celebration Play Date Fun: Boo Bark, Spooky S’mores & Poison Punch {Recipes}

October 28, 2013 By Autumn Rose Reo 4 Comments

As part of a sponsored campaign for Collective Bias®, I was inspired to create some fun and quick recipes for a Halloween play date using our favorite Mars candies, 7 UP and Hawaiian Punch.
As I’ve been sharing on mamachallenge, I simply love Halloween.

The decor, the fun and the candy make it a perfect opportunity to get together with family friends to catch up before the Christmas holidays. So we invited over a few of the neighbors for a little play date with a spooky celebration theme!

The kids wanted to help with the party preparation fun, so we put on our aprons and began the creation fun! My little mad scientist (my 5 year-old) came up with the idea of Boo Bark; an inspiration from his recipe of Easter Day Bark. Using all his favorite Mars candies like Twix, Snickers, and M&Ms, he whipped together a delicious candy-coated treat, with a little help from mom (melting the chocolate.)

#shop

Once in the Halloween spirit, he couldn’t stop himself! My little chef, wanted to have one more dessert for his party. Since he loves s’mores, he decided to make a Halloween S’mores using pumpkin marshmallows, Snickers miniatures and cinnamon-flavored graham crackers. I was surprised at how good they were and tasted just like Halloween!

#shop

To wash it all down, we made up our own brew of “Poison Punch” with Hawaiian Punch, 7 UP and a little dab of sherbet for effect. We also used some other Halloween fun using juice ice cubes and gummi body parts to add a little more fun to the bow. Using a decorative cauldron and a fun little toy we found at the Halloween store, we were able to add a little spooky effect with fog. While you could opt to use dry ice instead of the vaporizer, we were able to find ANY anywhere, so this little device made it easy for us to use and could be used over and over.

#shop

See? Having a little spooky celebration get-together can come together with little work or effort with just a few favorite ingredients! And best of all, after Halloween, what an easy way to use your leftover candy and create a treat perfect for giving in November (just change out your M&Ms for yellow, orange and brown.)

Mars Variety Packs make getting ready for Trick or Treaters easy with Miniatures available in 230 pieces & Fun Size packs in 55 pieces.

We’ve done our own BBQ stop shopping this last year from our own @hurtadobbq, @smokenashbbq and @225bbq in Arlington, @goldeesbbq and @panthercitybbq in Fort Worth, @zavalasbarbecue in Grand Prairie and @franklinbbq in Austin, no one can say that BBQ is BBQ. It’s as vastly different as the landscape as Texas. Now I’m off to @burntbeanco - #sequin here we come with the rest of the state!

🚨 ACT NOW: Keep Public $$$ in Public Schools! 🚨

Click Here (takes less than one minute):
https://www.txpta.org/take-action

Tomorrow, March 11, the Texas House Committee on Public Education will hear HB 3. Let’s make it clear: Public money demands public accountability!

Texans have rejected vouchers since 1957—yet lawmakers are once again pushing them through with SB 2 and HB 3.

💰 Vouchers drain public school resources.
📉 They don’t improve student achievement.
❌ They aren’t about "parent choice"—private schools choose their students.
🏫 Texas parents already have school choice.

Governor Abbott is making vouchers a priority, but Texans are pushing back. Lawmakers are feeling the heat from voters who refuse to let public schools be undermined.

📲 Take 1 minute to make your voice heard NOW!

📷Jackson and Taylor are 2 of the 5.5 million reasons why Texas must keep public dollars in public schools. I was a product of public schools and had an amazing experience in a rural community with some of the best teachers. Change needs to happen, but taking away resources like these from schools is not especially when they ste already underfunded and our teachers’ morale is at an all time low. Communities work better together not when you separate them further apart.

While many of the animals sleep, DinoLumia and DinoVision: a Jurassic adventure comes out to play, along with tons of holiday light photo opps and winter fun experiences. Enjoy catching up through self-guided, self-paced walk-through and spend time together while taking photos, which is ideal if you don’t like the holiday overload! And don’t sleep on Santa here, as he has a certain twinkle in his eye the kids always seem to like to catch up with (mom was even able to get a shot.)

And for the even bigger kids over 21, Dallas Zoo: After Dark, goes wild on Thursday, Dec. 12, 6-9 PM with eats, treats and holiday drinks, live music, and games and other ways to get you in the holiday spirit!

WHERE TO CHRISTMAS IN DFW WITH TEENS // Classic Ch WHERE TO CHRISTMAS IN DFW WITH TEENS // Classic Christmas

🌲 Coca Cola Classic Christmas - Choctaw Stadium in Arlington
🗓️ Now through Dec. 29

Growing up @cocacola made the holidays magic, so when Coca Cola Classic rolled down the road, we had to go peek! Partnering with @enchantchristmas, the experience is part lights, part photo opps and for my kids mostly FOOD and overall a lot of fun - all washed down with (of course, a Coca Cola!)

What was also great was a little walk through memory lane with Coke Christmas moments throughout the years - cue the polar bears and 18 wheeler!

Experience:
🎅Market Square (definitely hit up the t-shirts - reading each one is half the fun)
🎅 Snow Tubing (always our favorite)Ice Skating (truth: we don’t skate, but it’s perfect people watching)
🎅 Interactive Light up Dance Floor
🎅 @cinemark Theatre with holiday movies
🎅 Coca-Cola Lounge - 21+ Cocktail experience (looked great to go with the girls)
🎅 Santa Landing

And of course, the Eatery! Eyes (and mouths) got big here with featured food from State Fair of Tex winners like The Drowning Tacos (SO GOOD we then ordered the Birria Tacos, too all cooked onsite and with all the sauce!)

It’s the real thing!

WHERE TO CHRISTMAS IN DFW WITH TEENS // Prairie Li WHERE TO CHRISTMAS IN DFW WITH TEENS // Prairie Lights

🎄 Prairie Lights, Lynn Creek Park in Grand Prairie
🗓️ Now through Dec. 31 (NYE) at 6 pm

Christmas wouldn’t be Christmas without @prairielights- with a packed car with blankets, Santa hats, hot cocoa and coffee, and blasting holiday music while we sing them even louder.

A stunning two-mile drive through light park complete with a midway stop - The Holiday Village with carnival rides, amazing bites (corndogs, funnel cakes and more, oh my!) And this year we were surprised with a new light tunnel, reimagined walk-through forest and new displays, great photo opps, gifts, visit with Santa, a lighted strollable forest.  It’s perfectly timed for food, fun and a little time on foot!

PRO TIP: Go early, get tickets in advance and spring for the fast pass on the weekends and prime holiday times. And enjoy it and don’t try to rush it - enjoy it! That includes entry and the experience (so bathroom before you go, but thankfully there’s one at The Holiday Village and you get the corn dog.)

Follow the “red light” to this one-of-a-kind e Follow the “red light” to this one-of-a-kind experience in DFW. 🚨

Named after Bangkok’s legendary road of entertainment of all kinds (Sukhumvit Soi 11), it seems fitting this newly imagined destination would find its home in Arlington’s Entertainment District. Anchoring the NEW @loewsarlington, @soycowboytx (also from @bbbutchers / @berghospitality) recently swung open the curtain this summer with an opening that made heads turn at every corner of this 12,000 sq. ft. of sexy space - with 3 unique bars, patio, viewable kitchen and dining room.

To call it a “Pan Asian restaurant” doesn’t do it justice with its rich menu of fresh sushi, dim sum, caviar, truffle, lobster, waygu (all things you don’t find in the home of the margarita machine and ballpark nachos.) And if you’re looking for entertainment, just take a peek into the expansive kitchen and watch your rolls or omakase be made. The cocktail menu is just as extravagant with everything from mezcal to Japanese whisky, you’re eyes will be just as happy as your lips upon your first sip.

While we experienced live music, fashion show and more as part of the opening, the cool smoke installation and the people-watching is definitely just part of the menu at Soy Cowboy you’ll have to explore.

Food Nerd Note: SoyCowboy is on the upcoming @dfwrestaurantweek menu for just $39, so it’s a steal to take your own trip on a budget. (Make your reservation.)
