Back to School 2020: Virtual Learning Tips

August 16, 2020 By Autumn Rose Reo Leave a Comment

Whether in person, virtual learning or home schooling, back to school looks much different than ever. Here are tips for how get it done and survive Back to School 2020.

Back in March 2020, most of us went to spring break for just a week, never to think we wouldn’t return to our classrooms. We were left with just a few weeks of school, doing whatever it was to make it to the finish line. Yet, here we go again, six months later, except we’re beginning the next “school year” in a different kind of limbo – not just how to complete a school year, but to hopefully educate our kids in the process and not lose our own minds. Welcome to back to school 2o20.

Back to School 2020_ Tips for Virtual Learning

Move over Survivor…you couldn’t make this plot up and every parent is a forced participant. However, we’re all in it together and there are many things we can learn from each other especially with what’s working and what’s not. So here are some of our favorite tips for Back to School in 2020.

#1) How You Choose to School is a Personal Decision.

Back in the good ole days of January 2020…there were basically 3 options for school: there was school, home school and for some kids, virtual learning.

Back to School

Yep, the good ole days.

Fast forward to now and we’ve changed all the options and how they work:

  • In-Person School: Remember that brick-to-mortar school?
    • However, even going back to school includes learning environments with big changes including masks, minimized socializing, no sports, etc.
  • Virtual Learning:  Coordinating with a school’s curriculum through an online format .
    • Some people have referred to this as at-home school, but technically this is virtual learning and differs from home schooling.
    • Some kids have chosen to do this for years, but most public schools are new to this and have spent months flipping to this system
    • And for some families this has another hybrid using a pod-learning system with one parent acting as “coordinator” for virtual learning for multiple families
  • Home schooling: A parent creates and controls the learning flow / environment
    • However many of the locations for field trips or on-site learning have changed so those aren’t available for resources for parent-teachers

Whatever option you had to make for back to school in 2020, it wasn’t easy and it doesn’t mean today’s decision is what you’ll end with. 2020 was the atypical year of pivot, change, pivot, change and if there’s any lesson we’ve all learned by now – flexibility is the key and the best plan is one that can change. So don’t judge or be critical of whether you’re doing the “right” thing…just give yourself a break. It’s good to learn from each other and hear all the pros and cons, but feel ok enough that when you come to a decision, you’re good with it and the kids are good with it (as best they can.) AND even more so, that if you change your mind – that’s ok too! There’s no right answer so if you find yourself discussing the same topic with a friend, just make sure to do it with no judgment.

Yes, basically, you do you.

#2) Create a Successful Set Up

Once you’ve made a decision, what’s next? For our school district, everyone is starting online to begin the year so that means everyone has to do it for at least a few weeks. So many parents are sharing their set ups on social media, so places like Facebook Groups, blogs and talking with friends have been my saving grace. Some of bought everything that IKEA and Walmart has online, while others are making use of dining room tables or adding their kids to their own home office set ups. Just remember, it’s about making a space to call your own. In our case we’ve made sure that their learning space isn’t in their bedroom but somewhere they have room to move a little, have access to all their needed supplies like paper, pencils and it’s in some organized fashion. I actually had a friend send this set up to me and I thought it was super resourceful especially for homes where the kid may have to move around when family members are on a call.

Otherwise there are several simple, inexpensive tables for purchase like these and these. This one is just $37 and I love that this desk folds up so if you need to move it for PE or need the space to be flexible. And remember that desk at IKEA? They have many options you can pickup curbside and have ready to roll tonight that are beautiful and have all kinds of drawers this desk folds up

For us and having two kids, that means two desks, two sets of supplies, two of everything. While I’d love if my house had four offices, it’s a house so it doesn’t. Until then, we’re going with something like this after school starts. The reason I’m waiting is you don’t know what’s going to work so until we get rolling, I’m not making any big purchases.

Whatever you do, just make sure the technology works. Everyone on the network is going to cause it to strain especially if you have everything Zooming, streaming and all that at one time. Mesh networks allow your existing WiFi to stretch to areas of the house that might not have the best connection and right now are at an all-time low on Amazon.

#3) Make it Fun

Are we not having fun yet? Well, it should be…at least for the kids! So of course it could be different, but this is it for now and we need to make the best of it. Let the kids help with decor or making their own space – even if it’s a photo, decorating their binder or bringing their dolls to school to make it seem less lonely are all ok. It’s about their comfort level during a not-so-comfortable time.

For us we’re also creating menus just like our school (Taco Tuesday is going into full effect and if I can find the recipe for those rolls the lunch ladies make at the school that would be the best!) Sundays are a great day to prep it all out and get ready for the week, so have them do lunches while you work on dinner! Having their lunches also gives them some “normalcy” so it feels like school.

Tips-for-Back-to-School-Bento-Box-Lunches13.jpg

And theme days – like wear your favorite college shirt or backwards shirt day –  is going to be important for keeping the spirit alive and a connection to their school. If you can’t purchase one, it’s time to make one together!

And the best biggest tip is having the schedule posted and quite possibly in multiple places! Having the schedule posted helps to help us remember when it’s time to log in and also when to log out! We all need to remember to walk away and take a break especially when you’re in the same place all the time. Walk around, take a social break (let them call a friend or message them) will also be a good one to keep things in check. Besides, these rules should apply for all of us!

Want to really know the secret to being the best at back to school this year?

Grit and grace.

That’s right. Give it to yourself, give it to others and remember we’re gonna get through this. Just breathe.

(And if you need a mask for you and your kids while you’re breathing away, these come in 10 packs #becausekids.)

Don't miss

Go: Summerfest at the Gaylord Texan

July 17, 2020 By Autumn Rose Reo 1 Comment

Need a quick way to get away…like now? Take an instant vacation from quarantine life with SummerFest at the Gaylord Texan.

Thank you to the Gaylord Texan for inviting our family to enjoy a stay at the Gaylord Texan.

Summer is supposed to be full of water, sun and lots of fun. While 2020 hasn’t been the ideal pocketful of sunshine, our family was able to follow the rainbow to the Gaylord Texan to remember what summer is supposed to be. Each year the Gaylord Texan celebrates the season with SummerFest, the ultimate summer getaway featuring events and activities for the whole family to enjoy throughout the resort! And with its outdoor 10-acre outdoor waterpark, Paradise Springs, featuring slides, zip line, poolside bar and lazy river, it’s always a part of our summer fun.

Gaylord

BEFORE OUR STAY

Of course, this year things have been different…and after three months being social distanced and quarantined to our home, I NEEDED a break.

Well we all needed a break.

I needed to hear laughing, splashing and something cold to drink next to the water PDQ.  However, for us travel wasn’t in the plans and we were apprehensive about how being at a hotel with COVID-19 guidelines could be possible and still be fun. But after reading about the Marriott’s “Commitment to Clean” practices put in place with the Vanderbilt University Medical Center, including enhanced cleaning technologies, hospital-grade disinfectants, dedicated sanitizing agents and cleaning processes throughout the resort, I was prepared (masks and antibacterial packed) to stay with one caveat: be ready to leave at anytime if we didn’t feel comfortable.

Paradise Springs is only available for hotel guests of the Gaylord Texan so you can’t purchase day passes.

Before our stay I also received an email with details from the hotel about what to expect and how to navigate the experience in the best way possible including a reminder to wear our masks, how to increase a social distancing with private seating options like cabanas, lounge chairs, etc. Additionally several options for contactless technology was put into place including using:

  • Mobile Check-In – Avoid the front desk and receive a Mobile Key delivered to your phone allowing you to skip the desk (yes opening your door with your phone!)
  • Chat with Us – For any needs before or during your stay use the Chat icon to connect directly with the hotel.
  • Mobile Requests – For those standard needs use the mobile requests to have items delivered directly to your room with contactless delivery if desired.

Honestly, they had thought of more things that I hadn’t even thought of, it made me feel even more comfortable before we even left.

DURING OUR STAY

When we arrived at the Gaylord Texan, we were primed and ready to make the most of our 24-staycation! Since we were staying on a Thursday – Friday, there were limited activities available during the week compared to the weekend experience. (A full list of activities and a map of the property can be found at WelcometoGaylordTexan.com.)

Gaylord

From the moment we were on property we were met with amazing customer service (even with everyone wearing masks on you could “feel’ the genuine hospitality.) Using our app we checked in, opened our door and dropped our bags to head to the waterpark…but not before we saw all the evidence that the room had been cleaned, a special bag of antibacterial for our stay, and a QR code to make it easy for us to keep us updated on the schedule of activities and dining options.

Gaylord

After we received our water park passes we rode the shuttle to the waterpark (required for all guests without private reservations at Paradise Springs) and off to swim! The shuttles come often, so we learned that if they were fuller than we wanted to ride you can elect to wait for another shuttle or there’s always walking (although it’s a bit of a climb with little ones.)

That’s when vacation really started.

Gaylord

Once I was escorted to my chair (it was just me sitting down or I would’ve gotten that cabana), a masked pool side team members was there to get me a cold drink (bring on the white sangria) and solve any other issues I might have. And then the kids hit the water HARD! They played all day long and I did, too. For the first time in a LONG time I was able to take a deep breath and enjoy myself. There was a moment when we all three of us were riding the lazy river (where each tube was cleaned each time you exited the water), when we all just looked around and say “THANK YOU.” It was a moment I’ll remember for a long time because none of us were taking advantage of the opportunity!

Gaylord

You are asked to wear a mask into Paradise Springs and then as we walked around, but it is not required in the water or while drinking/eating.

While dragging the kids out of the waterpark was almost impossible, they also didn’t want to miss the fun like Trivia, Painting on Canvas, and the resort-wide scavenger hunt!  I was able to sneak in sunrise yoga next to the pool in the morning and surprise the kids with room service with pancakes (all delivered to the room with disposable dining ware.)

TIPS FOR STAYING AT THE GAYLORD TEXAN

  • Visit during the week if you want optimal social distancing, however, if you’re looking for the most activities/ amenities available opt for the weekend.
  • You’ll find antibacterial in your room so it’s not necessary to load up your luggage with cleaning products. Just remember to bring your mask!
  • To minimize attendance and give everyone an opportunity to enjoy Paradise Springs, on the weekend you must pick AM or PM to visit. However, there is another resort pool to enjoy on property and a huge lake nearby to swim.
  • Get the reservations for the chair / cabana. I was able both days to nab a spot with no advance, but if you have a bigger family or want to optimize your distancing, this is the way.
  • You cannot bring outside open drinks to Paradise Springs so don’t BYOB. There are plenty of great options available for food and drinks while at Paradise Springs (so if you’re bringing water for the baby bottle just keep it closed until you get there.)
  • Know your activities and schedule accordingly. For instance, since some of the activities, retail stories and restaurants are only on the weekend, you’ll want to make sure you don’t think you’ll be slurping noodles at Zeppole on a Tuesday night.
  • Look for specials! Recently the Gaylord Texan hosted a $139 rate (which is almost unheard of), so keep watch for great deals!

Gaylord

I’m so glad we went to the Gaylord Texan! The change of scenery was just what we needed. When my daughter woke up in the middle of the night and asked if we could open the doors, we stepped unto the balcony that opened into the atrium and looked out to hear the water running and look out over “Texas,” she said “mama, it’s so peaceful…isn’t it wonderful?”

Gaylord

NOTE: This was an account of our experience. While we felt safe and reasonable accommodations for the activities we participated / experienced, please make your own decisions for what is best for your family.

Keep it Together with CBD

July 6, 2020 By Autumn Rose Reo 1 Comment

Stressed? Tired? Headaches? Foggy brain? Body Pains? More than ever it’s time to look at what and how you take care of your body. Keep it together with CBD.

Over the last few months we’ve all learned some new talents – school teacher, playdate mate, manicurist, hair colorist, nurse, and that was already in addition to housekeeper, wife and mom. With all the additional stress (let’s stress that) lately, a lot of things have suffered.

  • All of our sleep patterns have been crazy. (Some days it’s four hours and some days it’s 10…)
  • I’ve spent hours in front of a computer for weeks and I can feel the carpal tunnel kicking in…and my legs are aching. (Work and school still have to happen, right? Along with filling out grants, loans and taxes!)
  • My back is killing me (especially around my neck) enough that I’ve been begging my daughter for back rubs (for 8 years old she’s not bad.)
  • The headaches are real.
  • And then there’s just the malaise happening right now for obvious reasons.

CBD

Now rattling off my list of ailments and gripes makes me feel like an old lady (and apparently look like one since my son starting calling me bags (dark circles), but it was the truth and I needed something to help me find a solution – ideally one that was as natural as possible and if I can get them directly without stepping into a doctor’s office.

I had been dancing around the idea of CBD for a while as a possible solution, but honestly I didn’t want to just follow the fad. I wanted to really understand what CBD is and how it works to be such a great “cure all” for so many issues. But with its natural characteristics, did make now the right time to explore its credibility and even more so, its effectiveness.

Why CBD?

CBD (Cannabidiol) is one of more than 100 cannabinoids found in the Cannabis plant.  Unlike THC which is commonly associated with marijuana, CBD is non-psychotropic and therefore will not cause feelings of intoxication or the feeling of being “high”.  While CBD can be found in the marijuana plant, most CBD products on the market today are derived from the Hemp plant.  Hemp, by definition, is very low in THC containing only trace amounts (less than 0.3%).

Our bodies contain “cannabinoid receptors” which are part of our endocannabinoid system (ECS). The ECS is responsible for the regulation of internal functions such as a pain sensation, inflammation levels, body temperature, and sleep. When CBD enters your body, it collaborates with our ECS system by binding to the cannabinoid receptors and thus helping the ECS system to promote homeostasis (a natural state of balance).

CBD

Unlike many modern-day pharmaceuticals, CBD works at the “system” level, not the “symptom” level, engaging with your body’s endocannabinoid system to provide homeostasis with, for example, your body’s immune and central nervous systems. So, if your body is experiencing high levels of inflammation, CBD works to help lower the inflammation to normal levels – restoring homeostasis. If you are feeling anxiety, stress or having trouble falling asleep your central nervous system may be over excited in certain ways. CBD works to help lower that level of excitement and restore homeostasis.*

While the FDA (and all the other orgs that certify and police products) continually researches CBD for natural healing and supportive properties, CBD is even more attractive because it’s non-habit forming. There are studies underway to research CBD for symptoms and needs such as pain and inflammation such as muscle and joint pain, lower back pain, sports injury, workout recovery, headaches as well as other common concerns such as stress and anxiety, headaches and importantly sleep issues like sleep loss, help falling asleep and staying asleep.

Yes, that’s still a lot to take to understand, so I decided to try it for a bit to see what it did.

CHOOSING A CBD COMPANY

KINDURTH isn’t just a reputable CBD company – it’s focused on the environment (hence the name.) Kindurth’s mission is to provide the community with wellness products that are derived from nature, completely safe and of the highest quality available. Their products are 100% natural, organically grown, vegan, non-GMO and sourced responsibly from licensed farms in the US. KindUrth with the core value that the Earth is KIND — sustaining life, health and wellness for all beings who inhabit this wonderful planet. Urth places emphasis on “U” as in “You” and “Us” in our shared responsibility to show KINDNESS to the Earth.

CBD

Plus, I loved the packaging that felt like one of my favorite upscale beauty products and everything I researched came with extensive information about the ingredients and the overall information about CBD, which is a win for me.

DOES CBD WORK

I decided to dive into the pool of CBD slowly. First choice was with the CBD Gummies designed to help with sleep. The combination of CBD and Melatonin (a natural sleep aid) together helps you fall asleep fast and supports healthy sleep cycles. They were delicious (=and my kids even tried a few. Indeed after about a week, things seemed to improve with more restful sleep.

CBD

While I saw positive results from the CBD Gummies after a short time, the cream was an immediate change. The 300 mg Premium Nano CBD Cream is a high-quality CBD blended with a special formula of Rosemary, Lavender, Arnica, Vitamin E, Menthol for maximum penetration and benefit to help with pain. Using the metered dose pump, I applied the vegan, USA made product to my lower back and with my daughter’s help to the parts of my back I couldn’t get to. Immediately I could feel the tingle from the menthol, but within 15-20 could feel the pain soften. And while the product is not habit forming I have to admit at night it’s become a part of my sleep ritual and brought me much relief. I used to be able to see the massage therapist, but for now considering my kids are the only ones to help me,  I’m relieved to have found something that works – with a beautiful scent and brings instant as well as longer-term relief with its extended time release formula.

As for the hallmark of the KindUrth products, the Premium Full Spectrum CBD Oil – I’m just starting to use this product. I wanted to give each product an opportunity to experience its results on its own and so far I’m so excited. I had held off because I had heard from others the taste of CBD oils are so “grassy.” but honestly I don’t taste anything off the 500 mg oil made only with hemp extract and coconut oil. Just placing it under the tongue, letting it sit for less than a minute and then swallow. Best of all the oil helps to bring a sense of calm, manage everyday stress, recovery from exercise, maintain healthy sleep cycles – things we all need right now. While I’ve only been using the CBD oil for less than a week, I’m excited by the track record of its results!

So am I using KindUrth now, I am. I plan to continue my exploration of CBD and how it helps, but right now I can say that it’s part of my new normal.

Hostess with the Mostest: Macaroni and Cheese Bar

June 13, 2020 By Autumn Rose Reo 32 Comments

What’s better than macaroni and cheese? NOTHING. Well except macaroni and cheese with stuff in it. Make your small gathering the easiest and cheesiest with a macaroni and cheese bar.

Want to get people all excited? Ask them about what makes the perfect mac and cheese.

Is it multiple cheeses? Is it just processed cheese? On the stove or in the oven? There are so many ways and so many opinions.

Macaroni-Cheese--Bar

A few years ago the mashed potato bar became the big trend for weddings and fancy parties. First because who doesn’t love mashed potatoes, but more so because it allowed everyone to personalize their meal just the way they wanted. I like to call this “Starbucking” phenomenon and for the most part, it always works! Plus – it’s really easy to lay out options and let guests do the work.

Macaroni-Cheese--Bar

Now just like cupcakes went to donuts, mashed potatoes has gone to macaroni and cheese. Other than a few basics, there’s not one way to do it – just let their creativity take over. I love this option and so will they! Here’s how we did this on Good Morning Texas.

How to Make a Mac and Cheese Bar

The Base

First off you’ll need a great, basic macaroni and cheese recipe. To keep the noodles warm, I suggest making a macaroni and cheese recipe in the slowcooker. Based on this recipe, I’ve added a few touches to make it noodleriffic (see below.)

Macaroni-Cheese-Bar

The Toppings

Once you have this down, the fun begins. What sounds good to you? I’ve put together a few common elements of toppings that are popular, but don’t let it end there. Taking a little inspiration from your favorite menus, add ingredients that together make a whole new dish. For instance, one favorite is Buffalo Mac and Cheese. So don’t forget buffalo sauce and chicken as toppings. And because sometimes people want recommendations, add a few suggested menu ideas just in case!

Topping Suggestions
  • Buffalo
  • Grilled Chicken
  • Lobster
  • Spinach / Artichoke
  • Bacon
  • Weenies
  • More Cheese
  • Pico de Gallo
  • Jalapenos, chopped/sliced/diced

Bradenton Area: This Florida Beach Destination Will Surprise You

June 4, 2020 By Autumn Rose Reo 2 Comments

Need to get away? Florida is a popular destination, but we found a paradise not far off the beaten path that is an adventure you don’t need a ticket to enjoy. Welcome to the Bradenton Area in Florida!

Hello Mama Challenge readers! My name is Debra Muccio and you’ll usually find me over at FindingDebra.com, a lifestyle blog where I focus on my day to day adventures at home, on the road and in the air. From holiday recipes to Disney secrets, I’m your go-to girl. Recently. Autumn sent me to cover a travel destination for her, the Bradenton Area of Florida. It was there that I joined 3 other bloggers for an adventure I’ll never forget.

Bradenton Area Florida guide

Anyone who knows me will testify to the fact that I spend A LOT of time in Florida. In fact, if you looked at my calendar recently, you’d find that this Texan visited the state four times this fall. But I have a little confession to make. Most of the time when I visit Florida, it has something to do with a certain mouse we all love. So when I had the opportunity to visit the Bradenton Area on behalf of Mama Challenge, I jumped at the chance.

What did I discover? That there is WAY more to Florida than my favorite theme parks and characters. Shhh! Don’t tell Mickey!

Follow along as I take you to a Florida beach destination that will surprise you, one set along Florida’s West Coast.

Bradenton Area Florida

Bradenton Area Beaches

Truth be told, I’d never heard of the Bradenton Area before, but one quick look at a map and I knew exactly where it was. Nestled between Tampa to the north and Sarasota to the south, you’ll find this area which includes the more city-like area of Bradenton, Longboat Key and a little known tourist destination called Anna Maria Island.

Whether you are looking to plan a family beach vacation or trying to add on a little rest and relaxation after a busy Orlando trip, this is the spot for you. It’s one of those destinations where you’ll find families coming back year after year. How do I know? I met many of them.

Let’s start with why people visit Florida year after year…the beaches!

The Beaches to Visit

The Bradenton Area has many beaches and they are all so very different. I’m talking about 16 miles of sand in this area. While the rain kept us from spending more time at the beach and from actually getting in the water (seriously, Mother Nature did not cooperate those 3 days), the moments spent visiting the beaches were amazing. These are just 3 of the beaches in the area. One beach in particular had me in awe.

Bradenton Area Manatee Beach

Manatee Beach – Located in the heart of Anna Maria Island, this beach is close in proximity to everything and is more for families with kids. It has many amenities perfect for families, including a cafe, restrooms, water fountains and gift shop. The playgrounds are incredible and located right on the sand!

Bean Point – Located at the very northern tip of Anna Maria Island, this beach is for those wanting a more serene and quiet spot. It will not disappoint.

Coquina Beach – This is the beach that stole my heart. Why? Well, I’m from Texas and let’s just say I’ve always been enamored with seashells. I’ve visited a few Florida beaches before and there were shells here and there, but let me tell you that Coquina Beach blew me away. At one point I was walking on nothing but shells. It was incredible and I cannot wait to take my daughter back. She would literally spend all day collecting shells.

Bradenton Area Restaurant The Sandbar

Where to Eat

Food. It’s at the heart of nearly every vacation you take. You not only want a great destination but you want to experience amazing and unique food. The Bradenton Area did not disappoint!

The Sandbar – From the very first night on Anna Maria Island on, we were spoiled rotten by the generosity of the restaurants we visited. In fact, that very first night could not have been spent on a more beautiful beach. Yes, our dinner was spent watching the incredible sunset with our toes in the sand. That’s not something you can do every day. You’ll want to make room for a visit to The Sandbar restaurant for sunset dinners. I’ve also heard the Sunday brunch is pretty incredible.

Owner Ed Chiles’ commitment on serving locally harvested seafood and local produce makes this restaurant top notch. One can see why The Sandbar is consistently chosen as a top spot for weddings and receptions by brides everywhere.

Seafood Shack – If you are looking for somewhere a little more casual, you’ll want to head over to the Seafood Shack. Located at Cortez Fishing Village, this restaurant, which opened in 1971, has gotten a new look and updated menu thanks in part to Chef Gerard. Locals and tourists alike will love the seafood offerings here. A special menu created for our visit included an outstanding spread of seafood complete with lobster and even turtle soup. (Yes, I tried it – delicious!!)! I have to say the Chef outdid himself and the meal ended with Bourbon Pecan Pie, family style!

Bradenton Area Pier 22

Pier 22 – When it comes time for an upscale meal or perhaps a date night, you’ll want to head off the island and back into Bradenton for a stop at Pier 22. It was at this restaurant, sitting outside along the water’s edge, where we spent 3 hours enjoying the cuisine.

Yes, 3 hours!

Pier 22 served us more than a meal. It was an experience.

Bradenton Area Seafood

From the unexpected sushi boat that arrived on our table to the homemade fudge slices that came directly from the recipes of the Chef’ Campbell’s Grandma, each bite was superb. The seafood. The sides. The incredible service. They wow’d us and for that reason alone, I will be back!

TIP: Pier 22 is in a great section of Bradenton and within walking distance to several area attractions, including the South Florida Museum I mention below. So definitely make a point to grab a reservation here.

Restaurants Off the Beaten Path

We all know it’s those small restaurants and locations off the beaten path which can make a destination memorable. Anna Maria Island has several of them worth noting!

Ginny’s and Jane E’s – This funky gift store actually has a cafe in the back where they serve the most amazing cinnamon buns that are approximately 6 inches wide! Do not miss this. You know it’s great when locals and tourists alike are standing in line!

The Donut Experiment – Kids and grownups alike will be smiling upon entering this small storefront off Pine Avenue. This is the island’s only donut shop and what a donut shop it is. Donuts are made to order with so many icings and toppings to choose from, but you’ll find a few specialties as well. TIP: Try the Key Lime Donut with a coffee to go!

Poppo’s Taqueria – Looking for a quick meal, one with affordable prices and organic ingredients? Look no further than Poppo’s Taqueria on Pine Ave (right next to The Donut Experiment). We grabbed a quick dinner one night after enjoying the annual Bayfest event. Don’t miss the fresh tacos and gourmet craft soda!

Bradenton Area - Things to Do

What to Do

Now that you’ve seen all the amazing restaurants in the area, you might think you’ll be eating the entire time you’re visiting. Oh no, you must make time for all the non-beach and non-food activities too!

You won’t be lacking in things to do while you are in the Bradenton Area, but here are a few of my favorites!

Bradenton Area South Florida Museum

South Florida Museum – A short walk from the the upscale restaurant Pier 22 you’ll find the South Florida Museum. The museum houses not only the Parker Manatee Aquarium, but also the Bishop Planetarium. We experienced both. I have to say that the show in the planetarium was stellar!

It doesn’t take long before you realize that manatee’s are a big part of the Florida landscape here. No trip to the Bradenton Area is complete without meeting Snooty, the world’s oldest manatee, located right here at the Parker Manatee Aquarium. He’s so famous that they even named a drink after him at Pier 22 restaurant!

Mixon’s Fruit Farm & Wildlife Rehab Tour – Another stop worth making in Bradenton, especially if you have kids, is Mixon’s Fruit Farm. This is Florida, so you can expect orange groves and it was a fun experience to get up close at this farm during a tram tour. It wasn’t exactly the time of year for harvesting, but you can bet we took advantage of the homemade orange swirl ice cream offered inside the gift shop.

Surprisingly the farm is also home to a wildlife tour, where we learned about how they rehabilitate Florida wildlife for release back into the wild. We met all types of animals like skunks, tortoises, a gigantic snake and more. You also can bet there were a few alligators. I even touched one of the smaller ones!

Bradenton Area Dolphin Spotting

Dolphin Watch Tour – You’ll want to head over to Historic Bridge Street to catch a dolphin watch tour with Paradise Boat Tours. The team there took great care of us and though a fast, incoming storm forced our trip short, we ended up spotting two dolphins upon our return. Due to the rain, they promised another boat tour to those who are able to take advantage, even if it’s not for months. Great customer service!

Bradenton Area Shopping

Shopping along Pine Avenue – Pine Avenue is Anna Maria Island’s main street, running from the Gulf to the city pier. The island in general is very committed to “green” and the shops are no exception here. You’ll find unique, one of a kind boutique shops along Pine Avenue and I dare you not to find something you must have! A few fun favorites included Junktion and Olive Oil Outpost.

Bradenton Area - Getting Around

How to Get Around

Whether you are coming in from Tampa, Orlando or Sarasota, chances are you’ll have a rental car at your disposal, which is great for getting to and from Anna Maria Island and back to Bradenton Area attractions, but don’t miss the fun of getting around this island.

You’ll want to check out Beach Bums, a great rental shop offering an assortment of transportation for your stay, including bikes, kayaks, paddle boards, and more. You’ll find that many tourist on the island use street legal electric golf carts to get around on the island and many use scooters & pedal cars too!

Free to those on the island is the trolley, which makes a continual loop from the Pier on the north to Coquina Beach on the south. The trolley is air-conditioned and runs daily from 6:00am to 10:30pm.

Bradenton Area - Where to Stay
Where to Stay

There was one thing I quickly learned during my visit to Anna Maria Island – this wasn’t a place where you’d see your favorite hotel chains. Anna Maria Island is unique in that many of the tourists stay in vacation rental homes, though you’ll find several boutique inns and motels seaside.

We were hosted in an 8-bedroom house on Anna Maria Island, complete with 7.5 bathrooms, courtesy of Anna Maria Vacations. The Malibu Beach home was spectacular both inside and out, complete with every modern convenience you can imagine. Though this house was meant for a large number of people, Anna Maria Vacations has rental homes to fit every traveling party size.

I don’t know about you, but I love the advantages of staying in a rental home. Having a full kitchen can save on meals and with a pool in the backyard (one with an amazing rock slide), there was build in entertainment! I did the math, and my extended family (which would fill up 8 bedrooms) could easily stay here and split the cost for much less than typical resort stays we are used to. Love that!

Bradenton Area

Overall, I have to admit that I fell in love with the Bradenton Area and I dare you to do the same!

Gift Ideas for Him

June 4, 2020 By Autumn Rose Reo 1 Comment

Father’s Day? His Birthday? A special celebration? It’s not always easy to get that special guy a gift, but these Gift Ideas for Him are perfect for any occasion at any price.

Ugly shirts. Tools. Bad-for-you food. I don’t know why, but getting HIM a gift isn’t always easy – especially if you have to send it in the mail.

Whether it’s Father’s Day, a birthday, a special occasion or of course, Christmas, men are just as hard to buy for as women. Unless they tell you what they want, it’s a game of cat and dog to figure it out or you know exactly what it is, but you need there size, special scent or flavor or it seems too much to make the wrong decision. (Believe me, I bought a recliner for my husband once and I was informed quickly that’s the kind of thing you let them pick out.)

Gifts for Him

Let’s be honest, guys are as hard as women to get the right thing. They don’t all love sports. They don’t all love BBQ. But we’ve put together some general ideas that work well for all different interests, styles and wants.

So if you’re looking for a good set of ideas of gifts that are going to be met with rave reviews, we have gift Ideas for Him are perfect for any occasion.

For the Beer Lover

Mini-Monster Bookshelf Brewery Homebrew Kit

Yep, let’s start with the generic “man” love – beer.  But beer making can actually be something that can be done as a personal or family project.  This Mini Monster Bookshelf Brewery One Gallon Homebrew Kit looks a lot more like a chemistry project than a beer-making apparatus, but the instructions looked simple and we could do it together. Many great partnerships have been built and shared over a cold beer. So we could make it and then drink it (barring that the stuff tasted good when we are done.)

Beer of the Month Club

For the beer connoisseur (or that guy who just can’t wait to make it and drink it), there’s the Beer of the Month Club.  Each month he’ll receive 12 bottles of the best brews from across the nation:

  • 12,  12 oz. beer
  • 4 different styles – 2 from each craft brewery
  • 3 beers each (cans featured 3x per year)
  • 3 free gifts (koozies, openers, etc.)
  • Beer Newsletter + Magazine

Spirits Connoisseur

Drinkworks Home Bar By Keurig

Okay there are plenty of things you can get him that have a beer theme, but like in the case of my husband, beer isn’t his favorite. He prefers whiskey and the occasional margarita. For this guy, he will love the Drinkworks Home Bar by Keurig. Yes, it’s that easy to put in a pod and out comes the perfectly poured, perfectly crafted cocktail, beer or cider with this easy push and deliver maker.

Flaviar Membership

If making his own is more work than gift, then go with spirits delivery and let them pick. I love the Flaviar membership representing some of the best names in bourbon, scotch and more. Either quarterly or yearly, each quarter you receive 1 Tasting Box of your choice and 1 full-size Bottle of your choice with free shipping. The cherry on top is the free live tasting events.

Personalized Whiskey Glasses

And of course with whiskey there’s the perfect presentation. These beautiful, personalized whiskey glass with a bullet going through it, is great for a hunter or Bond fan alike. Plus they are a great talking piece!

For the Food Lover

This is where many men fall in my life: they’re all about some good food. And if you can make it where you can enjoy on a good camping trip or easy to eat wherever he’s going, then I’m golden. Make it taste amazing and it’s almost too hard to keep it stocked. That’s why the The Manly Man Company® is a no-brainer. The Best Jerky Gift Box is exactly what it is – the best of the best with a little bit of everything including spirit infused jerky and the strangest, but best Pepperoni jerky (don’t knock it until you try it!)

There are other options as well including the very romantic Beef Bouquet that is bound to show your love in more ways than one! Available in different flavors and sizes, you’ll get his attention with this beautiful display and make his taste buds dance! (We all know the way to make a man really happy is through his stomach!)

Man Crates Hickory Grilling Crate

For the BBQ, go with the Man Crates Hickory Grilling Crate as another way to give him something not just to eat, but to create. This crate, part of the Man Crate brand, includes seasoning, marinades, chips and more to make him the BBQ king of his domaine. And when your man loves BBQ as much as mine does, well it’s clear that there never will be a sauce that he’s not afraid to pair when a big rack of meat.

BBQ Crate

Personalized Steak Branding Iron with Cedar Gift Box

He’s got the skills to make a mean, juicy steak so it’s only right for everyone and their dog to know who the master griller is. Treat your grill master to some red-hot pride with the Personalized Steak Branding Iron with Cedar Gift Box.

BBQ Kit

The Man with Style

Dollar Sock Crew
Whether he likes this funny or likes them with class, the Dollar Sock Crew makes for a great gift. With several price points including as low as 4 pairs for $10, you can create a subscription or let him do the picking for new socks every month. With various designs and colors made with quality materials, these are the socks he’ll walk into each day with a little pep in his step.

Scent Box
My husband has had one scent for 20 years…and that’s when he actually puts on cologne. If the man in your life needs to update his smell-good factor SCENT BOX is an affordable and fun way to do it. Sample new designer fragrances each and every month and once you find your favorites, you can then purchase them in larger sizes.

No Idea What to Get Him?

It’s ok – it’s the thought that counts, right? Try out America’s Crate. Yep, American-made and American-centric products curated at different price points for any guy who wants to show his American spirit.

Father’s Day: Donuts for Dad Printable {Giveaway for Hamilton Beach Coffee Maker}

June 2, 2020 By Autumn Rose Reo 62 Comments

Holidays seems to be coming in fast, so make sure not to miss this one including a sweet treat for dad! Here’s an easy way to celebrate Father’s Day with a free printable and recipe.

Thanks to Hamilton Beach for keeping the caffeine flowing by providing the Hamilton Beach Scoop CoffeeMaker and sponsoring this giveaway.

To say that coffee has been our family’s lifeline for the last few weeks is an understatement.

I just thought we liked coffee – until my husband was at home full-time due in early March. After just a few days, I realized toilet paper wasn’t going to be what I was going to have to search and stock up on. It was coffee, especially in those little cups. I mean do the math…I wasn’t going to keep them in stock or afford them on the way he was sucking them down!

DonutsforDad

I normally sipped (and microwaved) 1-2 cups of coffee a day and with the new workload I was adding another to make it through the day. But once our home became the corporate headquarters for both our jobs, along with our kids’ classroom, lunch room and gym. To make our schedules all work together as much as possible, Dad’s office took over the media room upstairs and my office directly below his. Beginning at the light of day, I would hear the coffee pot go off in the kitchen, then multiple times up and down the stairs as it went to refuel in between his 6+ zoom meetings and conference calls, until around dinner time…”If he only he had a breakroom,” I thought.

Dunkin-Donuts

Show Them We Appreciate: Donut What We Would Do Without You {Printable}

So with Father’s Day coming up (and no idea what to get for dad), the kids and I decided to create our own break room upstairs, stocked with all the staples for “dad’s breakroom.” Any good coffee station would need a durable, single-cup coffee maker with the extra tall ones so dad could fill up his big insulatable cup) and of course, donuts.  The kids were excited to add their creative part to the donuts (using this easy-t0-make, easy-to-decorate recipe, especially when you can’t get delivery.)

DonutsforDad

The Hamilton Beach Scoop  was the ideal coffee maker for this secondary coffee station. This uniquely designed coffee maker brews ground coffee in less than 90 seconds, so ideal for those times in between calls. And with two brew options sizes including eight ounces or a 14-ounce travel mug as well as regular or bold settings, he can fill ‘er up without trying to wedge his cup or brew two cups to full it up. What I really loved was that without the use of pods, K-cup®** pods or disposable filters, he could just use his own coffee blends and scoop it up directly with the scoop that goes into the pot and press brew. That’s it. No directions or extra cups necessary.

DonutsforDad

DonutsforDads

The coffee maker selection was the easy part…now what?

I didn’t have time or the ingredients to make a scratch-made gourmet donut recipe. However, the kids really really wanted to make them (actually, they just wanted to decorate them!) Thankfully, I found several recipes online that require only 2 ingredients to make donuts. (Yes, just two ingredients and they were two I had.) While they weren’t going to knock Krispy Kreme out of business, any time you’re covering something with sugar and then douse in sprinkles, it’s going to be good – especially when you’re pairing donuts with coffee. (I’m hoping to share a stellar donut recipe very soon after a little more practice, so keep your fingers crossed.)

DonutsforDad

Of course, a nice break room needed a sign to bring it all together, so we created this cute printable! Printing it off on 8×11.5 inch paper, we slid it in a flier holder and it was ready! (Of course, you can change the printout for what size you need.)

Donuts for Dads - Download MamaChallenge (Click to Download)

And that was it! With many of us at home working for a while, this idea is perfect to keep you both sane or if you have a house guest, this is the ultimate way in show some real hospitality. And of course, this little station is made for Father’s Day, so greet dad with a special way to say “thank you” and “we appreciate you” for all those hours of work every day.

Hamilton Beach is being very generous to help make this day memorable by giveaway one Hamilton Beach Scoop Coffeemaker to a lucky follower!

5 Fantastic Facts About Donuts

June 1, 2020 By Autumn Rose Reo 98 Comments

Just in time for National Donut Day, we’re sharing fantastic facts about donuts. Paired with your free donut from Dunkin Donuts, it’s going to be the sweetest day.

*Affiliate links may be included.

Consider this my ode to the donut. Or is it doughnut… and what in the world is a cronut?

Whatever it is we all can agree it’s good however you order it – glazed, powered, filled or sprinkled. So on this blessed holiday from the food gods (there’s one for everything, right), we have 10 factoids to give homage to the all-American (or not) donut.

NationalDonutDay

1. Is it doughnut or donut?

Actually they are both right. So for all intensive purposes, I choose to smell it the shortest way possible.

DD7

2. Who do we thank for the donut?

That could also be out for discussion…This delectably simple treat that has spanned the ages and has been giving our taste buds a run for their money as early as the 19th century from Dutch-U.S. immigrants calling the pastry an oliekoek (a Dutch word literally meaning “oil cake”.) However, some historians give the title to “settlers from the English county of Hertfordshire, who brought with them recipes for yeast-raised “Hertfordshire Nuts.” However, the donut historian Michael Krondl gives evidence it could have been even earlier than that.

 DD6

3. If there’s no nut, where did the “nut” come from?

That all depending on your preferential historical background of the donut. However, stories say the first “donuts” didn’t have holes and resembled more of a walnut shape, hence the name “dough” NUTS.

DD5

4.   How did the holes came to be?

It’s all in the cooking…Legends say that the trend of donuts with holes came to be only because it made it easier to cook evenly.

DD3

5. How much do we like donuts?

We like ’em a lot. 10 billion donuts are consumed in the US every year.

And it shows. There are more than 11,300 Dunkin’ Donuts restaurants worldwide – more than 8,000 Dunkin’ Donuts restaurants in 41 states in the U.S. plus the District of Columbia, and more than 3,200 international restaurants in 36 countries.

DD2

Okay – this is technically six…but I’m on a roll…

6. Why is there a National Donut Day?

While it’s just a good reason to eat donuts, this “holey” holiday has been around since 1938 from The Salvation Army as a fundraiser to honor the special volunteers sometimes called “Doughnut Girls” during WWI, who helped boost soldiers’ morale with the confection.

So in actuality it’s un-American NOT to celebrate National Donut Day! And Dunkin Donuts wants to help you celebrate!

Camp Goes Online: Virtual Summer Camps

May 22, 2020 By Autumn Rose Reo Leave a Comment

Move over home schooling, summer school is up next…but no “Camp Mom” here. Instead we’re taking it online with our favorite Virtual Summer Camps.

As parents wind down the end of your mandatory “home schooling” you may feel that celebrations are in order…well they are (mostly from the parents.) The question is NOW what are you going to do with the kids?!?

While some summer camps may be in session, many have canceled their offerings for 2020. However, that doesn’t mean kids are stuck with TV or CAMP MOM as their only option. Just check out how some very creative camps have pivoted to a virtual summer camp.

Virtual Summer Camp

From two-hour one-time camps to full-day weeklong (and longer) options, there are camps for almost everything to outdoor skills, art, cooking, programming, theatre, and many more. And best of all, what a great way to explore some of your favorite places for camp, whether you’re a local or just want to explore some of Fort Worth / Arlington’s favorite places for camp from the comfort of your own computer!

Get ready for some real adventures in parenting with online summer camp!

(This list will be updated as information is available. Please email us with your suggestions and recommendations.)

TRADITIONAL CAMP

Okay, none of this is traditional, right?

But when you normally think of camps, there are cabins, counselors, arts and crafts, and of course, cabinmates. These camps are going above and beyond trying to take the camp experience online.

Camp Supernow

Kids ages 5-11 are invited to escape the boredom of quarantine with adventure online creating and learning at Camp Supernow! Managed through Zoom, campers are guided through a schedule of crafts, play-based learning activities, movement and mindfulness, while gaining a greater sense of human connection with their counselor and 6-8 cabinmates. The weekly curriculum is tailored for the campers’ ages and can be customized to the interests and needs of a given group. Plus they give you one day of camp free to try it out!

SPECIAL OFFER:  Receive $25 off your first week with code: MAMACHALLENGE at Camp Supernow.

Buffalo Gap Camp

I think having as much time outdoors as possible is always a plus in the summer for the kids. For this reason I sign the kids up for tons of outdoor camps to get them to move, socialize and enjoy being a kid. Well…this summer may be a little different, but Buffalo Gap Church Camp is doing their best with Camp-in-a-Box! Each camper will receive a “camp in the box” in the mail and have access to online live bible studies, live small group games and conversations, craft tutorials, and worship services. Plus it’s only $45!

CREATOR CAMPS

Quarantine life has managed to make us all better cooks in our kitchen, artists in offices, and much more, so it’s time to get the kids some schooling with some creator camp options!

Science Project Kits

Sweetology

This Missouri-based gem already had camps for both in-store and online cooking fun, but now more than ever we’re benefiting from the forward thinking of Sweetology. When you sign up, you don’t just get the online instruction, but the supplies are also sent to to your door so you truly have what you need for camp! With three different camp themes (Under the Sea, Furry Animals and As Seen on TV) divided into two age groups for three hours a day for a week, this is really a sweet deal!

River Legacy Science Center

Summers in Arlington wouldn’t be the same with fun at River Legacy Science Center. A true gem in the city where we live, River Legacy has shifted their normally very booked camps to an online offering for all ages. With greatly reduces fees from their normal class, this is an opportunity to see why there’s normally a long wait list for this one!

Lindsay’s Art Camp

Honestly, I can’t recommend Lindsay’s Art Cart enough and you’ll find that is what everyone says. Her free virtual art classes throughout the pandemic are how both my kids and I have kept it together. However, she’s just launched her newest concept, Family Collaborative Painting, which is a self-guided, 5-day e-course you do as a family – that’s is as much art as it is therapy (she actually partnered as well with a therapist, too!)

GAMING / CODING CAMPS

Here is where being online really does win! Definitely riding the wave of e-gaming, this isn’t a trend, but the way of the future. If you have a budding e-gamer, engineer or , they will thrive in these camp options.

Code Ninjas

Code Ninjas is keeping kids busy with their online summer camps. Minecraft, Python, and all that online stuff that makes kids today much smarter than us. At least if their online they can learn how to make a million.

Virtual Tech Camps

Virtual Tech Camps from IDTech are focused on fostering STEM skills while bonding with new friends, all online. With several different options (5 consecutive days, Monday-Friday) with topics like Python, Java, Minecraft, Roblox, Unity, Adobe, 3D modeling, and more. With only 5 students per instructor blending personalized learning and time to socialize with new friends.

i-Code School

What got my attention at this STEAM-focused camp is “65% of children entering primary schools today will work in jobs that don’t exist today.” So why wait to get them prepared for what’s coming? i-Code School has several courses with extended day (9 am – 5 pm), Monday-Friday choices including game design, robotics, drones, virtual reality, technology, engineering, 3D printing and entrepreneurship.

THEATRE CAMPS

My kids have always loved theatre camp and I’m a drama brat so I know the benefits of getting to present, use your imagination (especially during these creative thinking moments), and enjoy a little escape.

North Texas Performing Arts

Photo Credit: North Texas Performing Arts

North Texas Performing Arts

In addition to normal physical summer camps, North Texas Performing Arts announces its Virtual Summer Camp programming for youth ages 7-18 featuring two new programs, half-day “Virtual Theatre Explorers” and full-day “Virtual One-Week Productions,” This is in addition to a continued long list of hourly online class options throughout the summer that start at $9.99 for hourly sessions with half-day and full-day sessions available.

Dallas Children’s Theatre

One of our favorites, Dallas Children’s Theatre operates all year long so some camps are already started, but summer sessions start May 26 so you still have time to join!

Dallas Cara Mia Theatre

Dallas Cara Mia Theatre’s School of YES! is a fan favorite already, but now it can do it online! This FREE, month-long life skills and leadership development camp is designed for ages 7-18. What’s not to love about this – it’s free, it’s for the bigger kid and it teaches them to be good humans.

Kids Who Care

Fort Worth-based Kids Who Care! is dedicated to producing great kids through the powerful combination of Musical Theatre + Leadership Education. July 6-11 they’ll have camp online for all ages with several different options based on ages including mini camp for the littles, actor’s studio for the elementary / tweens and improv camp for the high schoolers. Each Zoom camp is only 1 hour long so an outlet to do something special, socialize and have something to build and grow their skills.

Stage West Theatre

This Fort Worth legend has exemplified the “show must go on” with virtual plays and entertainment from Day 1 of the quarantine, so it was only fitting they would also take their summer camp online, too. From tech theatre, broadway and even Tik-Tok (yes, that is definitely performing), Stage West Theatre has camp topics ranging in ages, lengths and prices.

FREE CAMP

Varsity Tutors

While summer camps may be hiatus there are several options popping up daily. However, one of the largest camp offerings is also FREE with some classes led by celebrities. Varsity Tutors has live classes that span for weeks with everything from cooking to art to theatre to songwriter and so more for all ages. (There’s even 5th grade math on here if your kid wants to get ahead!) And did we mention it’s free? Can’t beat that!

Fresh Start on Laundry: Managing the Load

May 21, 2020 By Autumn Rose Reo Leave a Comment

It’s a necessary evil but it’s gotta get done: laundry.  Here’s a handy list of keeping things manageable and also a way to keep you from “laundry overload.”

Thank you to Press Cleaners for helping me to manage my mamachallenge and this sponsored post.

There are two things I hate doing more than anything (yes, anything): dishes and laundry.

But they both have to get done and unfortunately neither the dishwasher or the washing machine can do it all without your special interference. (Let’s fact it, those appliances should be renamed the “dish helper” and the “washing machine steps 2-3.”)

Laundry

Get a fresh start both at school and home with these laundry tips.

Did you know that on average we spend up to eight hours a month on laundry-related activities?

Donate or Alter Old Clothes

Let’s face it, last year’s wardrobe probably doesn’t fit anymore because this summer’s growth spurt decided to take matters into its own hands. If you timed everything right, one sibling can easily jump into their older sibling’s hand me downs (a lot of us have been there). If not, think about throwing any old clothes into bags and taking them to a consignment sale like Just Between Friends (it’s my favorite.) Make a little money on your old clothes and you can stock up on clothes for the next season at extraordinary prices.

Just Between Friends Fort Worth

Get Ready for New Stains

You know that giant box of markers you just received at SchoolSpecialty.com? You know who’s favorite color marker is going to make its mark on that brand new outfit you bought just two weeks ago. Luckily a lot of crayons and markers can easily be removed with some detergent and warm water, but if it turns nasty (looking at you, permanent markers), you’re going to need some heavier stain warfare. Make sure you’re stocked up on stain removal products so you can attack the stain once the 3:30 bell rings. If all else fails, enlist the expertise of your local dry cleaning professional, as they have more products to work with (mine says don’t do anything before you bring it to her because it can also do worth, so decide in advance who is going to take on that stain for success!)

Freshen Up Household Linens

From the school supplies to the wardrobe, everything seems like it’s getting the refresh that it deserves — except for your home. Summer break means a lot of wear and tear on your home’s furniture and linens. With the kids in school and a regular schedule back in motion, think about professionally cleaning everything from bedding to drapery. In fact, you should try to freshen up household linens frequently since they’re essentially magnets for dust, sweat, and other less than desireable friends. So how often should you be cleaning certain linens and fabrics around your home?

Women spend nearly an hour a day on laundry and interior cleaning (compared to men at just 15 minutes on average)

Here’s a quick guide for reference:

  • Bedding (Sheets/Pillowcases) – Weekly
  • Bath Towels – Clean After 4-5 Uses
  • Workout Towels – Clean After Each Use
  • Curtains – Every 1 to 3 Months
  • Duvet Cover/Comforter – Every 3 to 6 Months
  • Pillows – Every 3 to 6 Months
  • Couch Cushion Covers – Every 3 to 6 Months

If you just went through that list and don’t know the last time you actually cleaned some of those items, it’s probably a good time to get it done. Some items, such as towels and sheets, can easily be cleaned at home. Others, such as curtains and couch covers, typically need professional care. If you smoke inside or have residents that are allergy-prone, you’ll want to increase the frequency of the cleanings.

All Hands On Deck: Laundry Day for the Family

Family laundry day? The words make me laugh, but even at the age of 6, my daughter is required to put in a little time. But when there’s just no time at all and the laundry starts to pile up like a national monument in your house, it’s time for reinforcements. Press (think uber for laundry) helps you get through the work so you can get to what you need to or even better, find time to spend as a family – not doing laundry. Doubled-down and won big! Congrats to @daynetxbbq Doubled-down and won big! Congrats to @daynetxbbq for being named #7 in @texasmonthly 2025 Top 50 BBQ!

We’ve done our own BBQ stop shopping this last year from our own @hurtadobbq, @smokenashbbq and @225bbq in Arlington, @goldeesbbq and @panthercitybbq in Fort Worth, @zavalasbarbecue in Grand Prairie and @franklinbbq in Austin, no one can say that BBQ is BBQ. It’s as vastly different as the landscape as Texas. Now I’m off to @burntbeanco - #sequin here we come with the rest of the state!

🚨 ACT NOW: Keep Public $$$ in Public Schools! 🚨

Click Here (takes less than one minute):
https://www.txpta.org/take-action

Tomorrow, March 11, the Texas House Committee on Public Education will hear HB 3. Let’s make it clear: Public money demands public accountability!

Texans have rejected vouchers since 1957—yet lawmakers are once again pushing them through with SB 2 and HB 3.

💰 Vouchers drain public school resources.
📉 They don’t improve student achievement.
❌ They aren’t about "parent choice"—private schools choose their students.
🏫 Texas parents already have school choice.

Governor Abbott is making vouchers a priority, but Texans are pushing back. Lawmakers are feeling the heat from voters who refuse to let public schools be undermined.

📲 Take 1 minute to make your voice heard NOW!

📷Jackson and Taylor are 2 of the 5.5 million reasons why Texas must keep public dollars in public schools. I was a product of public schools and had an amazing experience in a rural community with some of the best teachers. Change needs to happen, but taking away resources like these from schools is not especially when they ste already underfunded and our teachers’ morale is at an all time low. Communities work better together not when you separate them further apart.

WHERE TO CHRISTMAS IN DFW WITH TEENS - Dallas Zoo WHERE TO CHRISTMAS IN DFW WITH TEENS - Dallas Zoo Lights

🌲 Dallas Zoo
🗓️ Now - January 4

Wonder what the @dallaszoo is like after dark? Once Upon a Wild Light comes alive with more than two million lights, 5:30 pm - 9 pm each night through January (so you can do this one with your family during the holiday break!)

While many of the animals sleep, DinoLumia and DinoVision: a Jurassic adventure comes out to play, along with tons of holiday light photo opps and winter fun experiences. Enjoy catching up through self-guided, self-paced walk-through and spend time together while taking photos, which is ideal if you don’t like the holiday overload! And don’t sleep on Santa here, as he has a certain twinkle in his eye the kids always seem to like to catch up with (mom was even able to get a shot.)

And for the even bigger kids over 21, Dallas Zoo: After Dark, goes wild on Thursday, Dec. 12, 6-9 PM with eats, treats and holiday drinks, live music, and games and other ways to get you in the holiday spirit!

WHERE TO CHRISTMAS IN DFW WITH TEENS // Classic Ch WHERE TO CHRISTMAS IN DFW WITH TEENS // Classic Christmas

🌲 Coca Cola Classic Christmas - Choctaw Stadium in Arlington
🗓️ Now through Dec. 29

Growing up @cocacola made the holidays magic, so when Coca Cola Classic rolled down the road, we had to go peek! Partnering with @enchantchristmas, the experience is part lights, part photo opps and for my kids mostly FOOD and overall a lot of fun - all washed down with (of course, a Coca Cola!)

What was also great was a little walk through memory lane with Coke Christmas moments throughout the years - cue the polar bears and 18 wheeler!

Experience:
🎅Market Square (definitely hit up the t-shirts - reading each one is half the fun)
🎅 Snow Tubing (always our favorite)Ice Skating (truth: we don’t skate, but it’s perfect people watching)
🎅 Interactive Light up Dance Floor
🎅 @cinemark Theatre with holiday movies
🎅 Coca-Cola Lounge - 21+ Cocktail experience (looked great to go with the girls)
🎅 Santa Landing

And of course, the Eatery! Eyes (and mouths) got big here with featured food from State Fair of Tex winners like The Drowning Tacos (SO GOOD we then ordered the Birria Tacos, too all cooked onsite and with all the sauce!)

It’s the real thing!

WHERE TO CHRISTMAS IN DFW WITH TEENS // Prairie Li WHERE TO CHRISTMAS IN DFW WITH TEENS // Prairie Lights

🎄 Prairie Lights, Lynn Creek Park in Grand Prairie
🗓️ Now through Dec. 31 (NYE) at 6 pm

Christmas wouldn’t be Christmas without @prairielights- with a packed car with blankets, Santa hats, hot cocoa and coffee, and blasting holiday music while we sing them even louder.

A stunning two-mile drive through light park complete with a midway stop - The Holiday Village with carnival rides, amazing bites (corndogs, funnel cakes and more, oh my!) And this year we were surprised with a new light tunnel, reimagined walk-through forest and new displays, great photo opps, gifts, visit with Santa, a lighted strollable forest.  It’s perfectly timed for food, fun and a little time on foot!

PRO TIP: Go early, get tickets in advance and spring for the fast pass on the weekends and prime holiday times. And enjoy it and don’t try to rush it - enjoy it! That includes entry and the experience (so bathroom before you go, but thankfully there’s one at The Holiday Village and you get the corn dog.)

Follow the “red light” to this one-of-a-kind e Follow the “red light” to this one-of-a-kind experience in DFW. 🚨

Named after Bangkok’s legendary road of entertainment of all kinds (Sukhumvit Soi 11), it seems fitting this newly imagined destination would find its home in Arlington’s Entertainment District. Anchoring the NEW @loewsarlington, @soycowboytx (also from @bbbutchers / @berghospitality) recently swung open the curtain this summer with an opening that made heads turn at every corner of this 12,000 sq. ft. of sexy space - with 3 unique bars, patio, viewable kitchen and dining room.

To call it a “Pan Asian restaurant” doesn’t do it justice with its rich menu of fresh sushi, dim sum, caviar, truffle, lobster, waygu (all things you don’t find in the home of the margarita machine and ballpark nachos.) And if you’re looking for entertainment, just take a peek into the expansive kitchen and watch your rolls or omakase be made. The cocktail menu is just as extravagant with everything from mezcal to Japanese whisky, you’re eyes will be just as happy as your lips upon your first sip.

While we experienced live music, fashion show and more as part of the opening, the cool smoke installation and the people-watching is definitely just part of the menu at Soy Cowboy you’ll have to explore.

Food Nerd Note: SoyCowboy is on the upcoming @dfwrestaurantweek menu for just $39, so it’s a steal to take your own trip on a budget. (Make your reservation.)
