Everything’s Better with (Twisted) Butter

One of my favorite trends is gourmet butters. I just love the Cabernet Goat Cheese Butter you can add to your burger at Chop House Burgers in Arlington or the sweet honey butter you get delivered with your bread at Saltgrass Steak House. It’s that extra buttery touch that takes it to the next level. And like my kids say, “it makes it taste GOOOD!”

And while I’d love to cook it up Paula Deen style, I don’t have the time or the calorie count. Thankfully, I’ve got a shortcut now for making those fancy butters without the time with Twister Butter. Available in savory and sweet flavors, these cute little tubs are filled with natural ingredients and come in six delicious flavors: Blueberry, Honey & Lemon Zest; Cinnamon, Honey & Brown Sugar; Cilantro & Lime; Chives & Parsley; Portobello Mushroom with Boursin-Garlic & Fine Herb Cheese; Bacon, Dijon Mustard & Green Onion. Of course, I couldn’t just choose one flavor to try, so I decided to take one for the team and taste four of them (the mushroom and cilantro didn’t make it to the testing.) And to be fair, I enlisted a few panelists (my son, daughter, husband and bestie) to help me. To be fair, I decided the only way to really “try” them was to have something simple in which to taste them with (butter on a spoon just isn’t appetizing), so I purchased plain bagels as to not taint our taste buds.

What did the results say of our “official butter tasting?” While I thought the Blueberry, Honey & Lemon Zest would reign supreme, it was the Cinnamon, Honey & Brown Sugar and Bacon, Dijon Mustard & Green Onion that took top honors. The bacon one just screamed baked potato heaven and the blueberry seemed like a great topping on top of French toast. However, when we were done, I really wondered on the different ways I could use these butters to look like I had worked really hard at dinner and didn’t.

Thankfully, the good folks at Twisted Butter already went there for me! Their site was filled with recipes that made me look (almost) Paula Deen worthy. And of course with the holiday cooking season about to go into full gear, these little guys might be just the perfect pairing for a holiday gift to the neighbors with homemade bread. Just remember it’s always homemade if you wrapped it up at home. You don’t necessarily have to make it from scratch.

It’s the thought that counted, right?

A Better Way to Bathe Your Baby

Don’t you just love the smell of baby lotion? There’s something about that little pink bottle and massaging it all over my little ones that reminds me how innocent, sweet and soft they are. For a brief moment I forget how bad their diaper wreaked throughout the house and how the mere scent of “baby” is almost enough to get one thinking about popping out another bundle of joy…almost.

Anyhow, I’ve never questioned my go-to baby bath products. They’ve have been old reliables for my two kids and many, many families before us have used them (their campaign even refers to them as “ the classics.”) However, while the scent is amazing and it has proven to me time and time again that it won’t sting my kiddos eyes when mom accidently lets it, when you turn over the bottle to the list of ingredients, there’s a lot of things I don’t know how to say and certainly don’t know how to read. And since unfortunately, I’ve decided to be more cognizant of what I’m putting in and on our skin, it made me wonder, “what the heck is in here?”

When I went online I couldn’t even find a breakdown of the ingredients, but I did find a full breakdown of all the reasons that the product is “safe.” While I expect safe from my baby products, I really want to find something that not only smells good, but is organic, natural and doesn’t use anything artificial. And baby, did I find some really good smelling stuff with Dolphin Organics.

The line recently rolled out their new Norfolk Lavender™ Shampoo Body Wash, Bubble Bath and Lotion line and it smells simply heavenly (have you picked up on the fact that olfaction is important to me?) When I turned off the bottle, the coconut and sunflower oil-based formula was nothing but impressive. Not only were the ingredients listed (and understandable), but the label had broken down what was organic, natural and artificial (note nothing was listed in the artificial column.) Additionally, it was tear-free like my “old standby,” and because lavender has naturally calming effects, it helped to soothe my baby (which is nothing but a happy thing in my world.) One thing I did learn Dolphin Organics products is that its Shampoo/Body Wash is based in organic aloe leaf juice, which has excellent healing properties, so it is perfect for the most delicate skin (which is important to us since both my kids have dry skin.)

Unfortunately, Dolphin Organics products are a little harder to get in Texas at this time, but thanks to the Internet you can have these large-sized bottles sent to your home directly from their website. I’d suggest getting the whole line, so you can really appreciate the benefits of lavender aromatherapy while you get in the kids clean. (That’s mom multitasking!)

Move Over Cupcakes – Mini Pies Are the New Slice of Birthday Heaven

Like many parents, my kiddos birthday parties are a big deal. I enjoy the planning and putting it together and they enjoy the party, so it’s a win-win, except for the paying part. However, for my daughter’s first birthday, I really wanted to make it all about family, especially since ours doesn’t live so close. With an August birthday close to Labor Day, we chose the lake as a perfect setting to just take it easy with a retro cherry-themed birthday party, complete with mini-pies, homemade ice cream and a huge helping of family fun…all made possible with a little help from a couple of local friends.

Like a Slice of Humble Pie with Mini Pies by Keller’s Sugar and Frosting

I really love cupcakes. I mean really. When I was pregnant with my first, I actually drove 40 miles to get a strawberry cupcake that I had seen in a magazine. So when this southern-style bakery opened up in Keller over a year ago, the only thing bad (or good) I can say is at least it takes me 20 minutes to get there to indulge in their scrumptious cupcake flavors like cookies and cream, samoa and turtle caramel pie. Then when they broke out the mini pies (about the same as size as and pie pops), I knew exactly when I would be ordering up a batch. In efforts to delight everyone’s taste buds, I had them give me a handful of everything. Oh, my, we love pie! (Can’t wait to bite into these!)

Nothing Goes Better with Pies than Ice Cream

Since the party “theme” was supposed to be centered on old-fashioned family fun, it seemed only fitting that we would complement the pies with homemade ice cream. I’ve never made ice cream myself, so I scoured the Internet looking for a classic vanilla ice cream. Of course, one of my favorites TV foodies, Alton Brown had a recipe for Serious Vanilla Ice Cream that didn’t seem too complicated and was rated five stars. A little off the charts…the peach preserves seems a little something delicious! One of the things I really wanted for my ice cream is that it had a solid texture and wasn’t watery like soft serve, so I am planning to freeze it for a few hours before serving with the old-school Original Zeroll® Ice Cream Scoop to make the perfect-sized scoops!

The Grandma Kit: What Do Caregivers Need When Parents Go on Vacation

Disclaimer: I received a copy of The Simple Joys of Grandparenting for purposes of this review, however, the views expressed here are all my own. Additionally, affiliate links have been included.

After two decades of waiting, I’m only a week out from embarking on my dream vacation to Italy. Two glorious weeks in Rome, Sorrrento, Florence, Pisa and Venice with my husband – and totally kid free. While that sounds pretty amazing, I know that two weeks is going to be HARD without my kiddos. Luckily both my amazing mother and my selfless mother-in-law are sharing the load of taking care of the kids while we’re away at their homes. And for that to be successful for everyone, it takes planning and paperwork to make sure the children and our moms are properly prepared with every detail from what foods the kids eat – to the pediatrician’s number in case an emergency happens (oh, please I hope that doesn’t happen…)

Each of the grandmas got a special kit with everything I could think of that they needed in addition to clothes, toys, games and of course, bottles and formula. With a little help of Google, I found many free downloadables that I could use to fill out and print.

The Grandma Kit included:

1. Temporary Guardianship:
Allows my parents and my husband’s parents to have temporary guardianship of my kids in our absence. (There’s both a start and an end time on this.)

2. Medical Power of Attorney:
This form allows the listed person to order medical services if necessary. For instance, if you child broke their arm, this would be the form needed to ensure grandma could take him to the emergency room and take care of any needed medical services in your absence.

3. Medical Information:
Provides basics like social security numbers, insurance info, allergies, prescriptions, and medical phone numbers like their pediatrician.

4. Kids Info Sheet:
Gives the basics on your kiddo like favorite foods, routines, etc.

5. Copy of Itinerary:
While I’m providing a link to a helpful template, I just use my own Excel worksheet. This is just a spreadsheet covering my daily activities which is useful if they needed to reach us or explain to the kids what we are doing.

6. Email & Skype Info:

Since we were traveling overseas, using our phones was not in the plan. So through the magic of iPad, we had planned to Skype our families periodically to see them and to checkin. This way we didn’t have to pay for any international fees. Another useful tip we’d learn is that if Skype wasn’t working out for us, you can always buy a Pay and Go Mobile Phone for $30 and use that in place of our mobile phones without incurring roaming charges on our normal phone rates.

7. The Simple Joys of Grandparenting:
This was a last-minute find and was the icing on the cake for my “grandma kit.” Grandmas never run out of hugs or cookies – but now there’s no way they’ll even run out of stories, nursery rhymes, games, crafts and even recipe ideas! The Simple Joys of Grandparenting by Abigail R. Gehring created a great collection of a little bit of everything that makes grandmas great like mac n cheese, homemade hot chocolate with marshmallows, sock puppets and even tea parties!

Growing up, trips to my grandma meant the world to me (and still do), so just reading this book gave me the warm and fuzzies just remembering the fun I used to have. Beautifully illustrated, it’s a perfect gift for new grandparents as well as like this when you might be traveling or they have the kids for an extended period of time.

While I have no tip or downloadable about how not to feel guilty or keep from missing your kiddos while you are away, hopefully this kit can make the experience a little more bearable for everyone!

Mama Needs a New Pair of Shoes

Unlike most women, I don’t like shoes. (Pause for gasping.)

We’ll let me paraphrase…I don’t like to wear shoes.

I actually like to look at shoes and even take them out for a walk from time to time, but I’d just rather be barefooted all the time. Unfortunately, the only thing bad about an upcoming trip to Italy is that I have to get a few pair of shoes that are supremely comfortable to wear for several miles of exploring, but have a smidge of style since I only have room enough for two pairs of shoes for two weeks! What I found is that shoes can be a lot more than just footwear. They can have their own personality and even improve your health.

The Predictable: Black Crocs Capri IV Sandal, ($39)

I’m a big Crocs lover, not of their most familiar shoe design, but their sandal line. I’ve had four years to research all the pros and cons of these shoes. They’re versatile, far-beyond comfortable with Crocs technology, minimal design, and reasonably priced at approximately $40. The double-cushioned footbed feels amazing, the little “massage pods” feel nice all day long. I can tell you from experience the only downfall is that if you leave a pair in the sun for several hours, they will shrink, so I pay attention to the warning they give you! However, a few avid travelers told me that Crocs were not the way to do Italy and I needed something more “sturdy.”

However, from looking at some blogs, it seems you either think Crocs are the best or the worst option for traveling. I won’t know which of these camps I’ll be in, but I’ll let you know in August upon my return as I don’t go anywhere without my Crocs – at least not yet.

The Trendy: Tom’s Wedge, ($69)

A recent birthday party with some moms all discussed their love or hate of Toms. Some of the ladies owned like ten pairs and my side still didn’t get it. I really want to like Tom’s…really. I looked at buying several pairs of them, although I think they are the cutest ugly shoe I’ve seen in a while. But after I yearned for a cute comfortable shoe that I could go to a party or the grocery store and not feel like I looked like “that” mom, I finally broke down and bought the Tom’s Wedge. I considered this style to be an upgrade from the original style and would be so stylish. Once they arrived on the doorstep, I put them on immediately and was pretty depressed. Not so comfortable and actually kind of tight, but thought I needed to break them in. While I got complimented EVERYWHERE I went, my feet hated me even more than they did all swollen at 9 months preggo…I still have hopes, but they just feel like a nice boyfriend that you just couldn’t get yourself to like no matter what.

The Wise One: Dr. Andrew Weil Spirit Sandal, ($90)

In the middle of my research on comfortable shoes, I ran into Dr. Andrew Weil…or at least his line of MOVE-ment sandals. Developed to not only make your feet look good, his podiatrist-designed, biomechanical Tri-planar Motion Control footbed has a deep heel cup that stabilizes, supports and naturally realigns the feet. And since this renowned doctor has focused his line on the mantra walking for life, I knew these shoes had to be comfortable and really great for my feet — if anything my feet (and my posture) would better than it was before. So to be a little “out-of-the-norm,” I opted for a snake-skin look and put these puppies to work.

I definitely felt the difference. Immediately the way I stood changed in the sandals. The style was cute and certainly above my everyday sandal. Now while the sole was flexible and soft, I have yet to actually put this sandal and the straps to a real “wear-it-all-day” test on my toes. However, I think this shoe might make it a place in my suitcase…maybe not as my long haul option, but as my dressier number for dinners and a change of shoe. I am actually looking into the Restore Sandal for #1 spot, but at $90 I’ll have to save up a little.

The Wild Card: Marchez Vous Claudette ($395)

In my search to “Google” comfortable shoes, I have run across several probably comfortable but very ugly shoes. But that was not the case with Marchez Vous. French for the words “You Walk,” this Italian-made shoe line is designed not only with comfort in mind, but definitely with style and fine craftsmanship. Created by veteran actress-turned footwear entrepreneur Yeardley Smith (probably most-well known voice of Lisa Simpson), this new line of shoe have a personality all their own. Now while I won’t be galloping in these shoes in Italy, I might have to make some space in my case to at least take these babies out to at least frolic.

Not only were these tall platforms rather comfortable for a pair of 4 1/2-inch shoes, but they made me feel like a whole different woman. And apparently that’s exactly what self-professed shoe-aholic Smith wanted when you slip her shoes on. So much so that each shoe has a card inside the box that has a special name and personality for each shoe.
When I opened my box and unraveled the pretty autographed-inspired paper to find:

Once I buckled them across my ankle, I felt like a supermodel with those killer-to-die-for shoes you repin on Pinterest (and I was just walking from my bedroom to the kitchen!) While I may have to find the right dress to match these hot-mama shoes, it’ll be worth it if I get the same head-turning looks I felt like they deserve. Time to take Claudette for a test drive (or at least another strut around the house!)

How to Get Your H20

It’s free.

It’s readily available.

It’s fat free, calorie free and absolutely necessary for good health.

But no matter how many reasons and times I read it and hear it, I just can’t make myself drink the amount I should.

Yep, it’s water.

I’ve tried many ways including using a big jug (you know the one that looks like a Sparkletts’ jug, chugged water before each meal and my favorite method that worked for my grandmother – putting rubber bands around my water bottle to keep up with the number of times that I had filled it up throughout the day…but somehow I always end up at the end of the day counting up like 2 whole glasses of water – if that.

Since none of the personal tips were working for me, I decided to go to the source. Understand – I actually like the taste of water, but there’s just some issue with me drinking it. I love lemonade, tea and ironically I normally order water with lemon when I dine out , but for some reason I have to do a little something to the “home” supply to liven in up. Once I started to investigate, I realized there were actually a lot of options AND none of them required me to add sugar. Actually many of them added a lot of good stuff like vitamins and lose weight.

So this mama was on to her next challenge, “what’s the best H20 Helper?”

Skinny Girl Daily Vitamin Power Packets

I already love me some Bethenny Frankel and my Skinny Girl Margaritas, so I figured that in the spirit of a little foul-mouthed love, I’d love me some Skinny Girl Daily water enhancers. Designed to fix the things that women want most like ENERGY, CALMNESS and healthy HAIR AND NAILS, it seemed like a marriage in heaven for me. I’ll admit, I didn’t consume so many of these that I started to look and feel like a Barbie, but the flavor tasted good and made water a little easier to take down. And maybe since it was well branded with a certain “Skinny Girl” it made me think I was doing something positive – which I was since its sweetened with agave and chock full of vitamins and nutrients (beyond your basics daily vitamins and the enhancers included in my roundup). Unfortunately, these aren’t sitting in my grocery store, so going online or a specialty drug store is necessary to get your dose of SG daily. However, you can get a multipack as well as a variety pack of all the Skinny Girl products…(more than you ever thought possible.)

Crystal Light Energy Packets

If I actually consumed the amount of coffee that I needed to really give me energy, I’m sure I’d be hooked up to a java IV. Since my body can’t take that much caffeine, I have to look for other ways to keep me going to get everything done that is necessary every day. With the words “energy” across the packaging and my favorite flavor of “wild strawberry,” I had to throw this one in the basket for a try. And it was good. Good enough I bought this was twice to keep in my bag in case I was out and needed a little “something.” Again, I don’t know how much energy it gave me or if my brain was just happy to make me thing so, but at only a few dollars for a box and only five calories – it’s a good keeper to have on hand when you want Kool-Aid, but need something that won’t make you look like the Kool-Aid Man.

Mio Liquid Enhancer

I was intrigued when I heard about the little “Mio,” so I looked for this one at the store and instantly brought it home to try. The thought of something that was not a powder, but a liquid that I could put it my drink only a squirt at a time was super. Especially since I always forget to take that first drink off my water bottle and make a mess when I used the powders. A MiO is sweetened with sucralose, a calorie-free, artificial sweetener that is 600 times sweeter than sugar. To maintain color and freshness, MiO does use certain preservatives and artificial colorings. While I’m a little leery of the artificially coloring in my white kitchen, the color of the “sweet tea” (which I have yet to try), does make it a little more believable that it could substitute my favorite southern beverage.

So what was the best? While I think the Skinny Girl Dailys were my favorite for getting lots of healthy benefits including drinking my water, the Crystal Lights are always on sale and readily available. I’ve got a cabinet full of them including my favorite drink option when I was pregnant their mocktail line. (It was the only way I got my mojito fix for nine months and coincidentally was the healthiest I’ve been in years.)
