Take a Deep Breath with Exhale Spa Dallas

All this back to school talk already has me in a tizzy and it’s not even started yet. However, when the schedule begins to weight on you, your breathing starts to turn into panting, and you feel like it’s a mad sprint everyday just to get the basics done – it’s time to take a time out. And breathe. And Exhale.

While sleeping probably sounds like the right plan, it’s actually a little mix of R&R with a twist of exercise that can get you on the road to restoration. A recent moment of OMG had me stop in my tracks and take a trip to Exhale Spa at The Highland in Dallas.

Tucked away in the busy, upscale hotel (where you’ll also find John Tesar’s Knife), you can escape all the mess with several options to just get away (even if only a few hours.) And surprise – just because it caters to visitors, you can definitely find a home at this place!

My day started off with one of the most amazing yoga classes I’ve ever taken (and yes, I’ve taken a lot.) Not only did I feel like I should be in the middle of India, we worked through postures and a small dab of meditation that brought me back to my center space and stretched some things that I forgot I had. Thank you, Kristen for that Power Yoga class! (Believe me, you should dust off your well-being even if you don’t have time to do the living room table.) However, if you don’t feel inclined to downward dog, you can hit the barre!

Only seconds after the class feeling about 10 years younger and my brain actually caught up with the rest of me, I shimmied to a fantastic brightening facial with a technician that I should share her name with you, but I choose not to so I can still get into to see her! She not only got my skin back in shape, but gave me the rundown of all the things I should be doing to keep me feeling like I’m in my 30s and not looking like I’m twice my age. Remember, taking care of your skin isn’t something you should think about…it’s something you should be doing every day.

Afterwards, a little time at the pool gave me the perfect trifecta to make my day (and my well being) complete. And that was only three hours!

Do yourself a favor and make sure to open that agenda and make time for yourself now. Not after you already needed it six months ago. Your body (and your family) will be shouting namaste with you.

See Dallas Stay at the Anatole with Staycation Fun

Summer began yesterday, right?

Unfortunately, no longer do I understand the “dog days of summer.” Unless you’re referring to the speed of my dog, Birddie, running after a kitty cat dares to come near our wooden fence.

With everything else that’s been going on, a vacation had not been planned, but was definitely in order. However, with no time to get on a plane or drive in the car with just three days to spend, what was there to do? And where was there to go? Especially something that wasn’t going to be work with two kids….

We’d stay home, but do a weekend downtown to explore all the places that we always drive by like the Reunion Tower Geodeck (a must-do for any trip to Dallas), take the little one to experience the Perot Museum to see science at work, and appreciate our city for all its worth. And without all the traffic!

We stayed nearby at the beautiful Hilton Anatole. With easy access to everything we wanted to see and do without all the stress, just being on property was tons of stuff to do without even leaving. (Doesn’t it look like Central Park? This is the inside green space at the Anatole.) Just walking around hand-in-hand with my kids to talk was a memory I’ll remember for a long time.

A three-day weekend was exactly what we needed – for both me to relax and the kids to enjoy some fun. We headed over to the Geppetto’s Theatre & Workshop to see marionettes come to life for “The Little Mermaid” then off for some serious pool action.

Then off for some serious pool action at the adorable watermelon-clad pool party happening all summer. With a swim-bar (for me) and outdoor grilling including hamburgers and hot dogs we were able to keep cool during the hot summer days in Dallas.

And then at dark, enjoy popcorn during the poolside dive-In movie, Paddington. All the fun that day wore those babies out so mama could enjoy time in the adjoining room to watch a Pay-Per-View movie with a glass of vino in my robe without any distractions (don’t event ask how long it has been since I had seen a new movie and the Anatole had tons available at my fingertips!)

One of my favorite moments of the whole weekend was watching them order breakfast in bed. I admit waking up to a delicious breakfast delivered to my door and someone else cooking it and doing the dishes was h-e-a-v-e-n.

Fort Worth has a little bit of everything from pony rides, bounce houses water sliding, mini golf, ziplines and tubing at Panther Island! The event is free, but you can upgrade to better seating and close bathrooms, which I consider always to be worth the cost. And of course, there’s a big fireworks show that can’t be beat (I saw it last year from Willie Nelson’s Picnic and it was amazing – but see that note below.)

For those of you that always spent Fourth of July with Willie, I’m sad to report he’s left the building…Well actually he’s returned his annual Fourth of July Picnic to Austin, so you’ll need to get southbound 35 for that Texas country renegade roundup.

Do You Want the Best Show in the U.S.? Then belly up with half a million of your new best friends at Addison Kaboom Town!
This little city may be home to less than 20,000 people, for 30 years this nationally acclaimed event has brought more than half to this suburb known for its food and fun to Addison Circle Park for what is called one of the Best Fireworks Shows in the U.S. (and that’s bonafide). On July 3, warbirds take over the sky, military bands fill the park with music, and surrounding restaurants put on their own watch parties as everyone waits for the 30-second show that is also simulcasted on 100.3 Jack-FM.

Word from the Wise: From my own experience (this event is one I’m proud to promote professionally), the way to do this event is at one of the fun parties like Cantina Laredo with a steel drum band, The Quarter with karaoke, or TGI Friday’s with bands all day. But there’s a ton to choose from, so make sure to check the list and see if you need to make reservations so they have a spot for you!

When I think of a spa day it NEVER has included one thought about the kids except who was watching them while I was there…however, in Carrollton, right outside of Dallas, there’s not only a day spa that you will love with three floors committed to recharging your mind, body and spirit, but a spa that’s created amenities for the kids. Spa Castle is the name of the fantasyland spa property right off George Bush Tollway and Josey Lane. For just $35 bucks you can live it up with the girls for a daycation just like you’d have at a resort (swim up pool with a bartender included), or just a quiet weekend with added Eastern-style spa services and an overnight stay at the on-premise hotel, or even a fun getaway for the family for a relaxing day of water fun and dining. Too good to be true? That’s probably why they called it a castle…I mean that is where we all think magical fairy tales come alive, right? But I have evidence it’s the real deal and one of my favorite Dallas places to spend a few hours (or maybe a few days if I’m lucky). With hydrotherapy pools, saunas, dining, spas and more, you will find relaxation at Spa Castle. However, I did need a little 101 to figure out what to do once I entered the doors. But the very friendly staff led me in the right direction and ensured I was enjoying myself all day long. (You didn’t expect me to bring the kids this time, right? A mom has to scope things out first…)

Just a few things to know:

Wristband: After claiming my magical “wristband” at the front desk, I was able to open and lock my locker, check in for spa appointments and even order a meal with my a show of my wrist (that’s attached to your credit card.)
Shoes: Because this is a spa built on Eastern practices, you’ll be leaving your shoes literally at the door in a special shoes only locker upon arrival. Then yoou will have another locker for your other clothes and belongings. You won’t be wearing shoes all day, but don’t worry, you’ll see them clean the floors more times in the day than I did my entire kitchen last year.
Clothes: You’ll be provided a spa outfit while you’re there of what seems like pink scrubs. You will wear those in the spa areas, a bathing suit in the pool areas and if you choose nothing in the hot tubs. But don’t worry, no pressure!
Pace Yourself: Like Disney World, you just can’t do everything in one day. Just enjoy things a little at a time and remember, that at only $35 you can afford to come back again and again.
Tips: Your gratuity is included in your spa service, so you really don’t have anything to worry about!

Featured as part of your $35-day pass, Spa Castle’s signature Sauna Valley features ten different saunas that help promote relaxation and detoxification. Each room has a different theme and purpose for you to find the best service for exactly what your body needs. In addition to my sauna time, I also snuck in a few spa services (there are tons to choose from) including the luxurious caviar facial. I wasn’t sure exactly what caviar was doing on my face, but whatever it was, it did it well since my skin has felt and looked radiant every since. My facial also included a little shoulder massage as well so after I was done, I was almost too relaxed to do anything else…However, I didn’t want to leave Spa Castle without seeing a few of the places I planned to enjoy the next time when I bring the girls next month for a resort-type day only a few moments from home!

Get Walked All Over and Like it: Relax with Felax

Relax. You should do it. Even if some Frankie in Hollywood says don’t.

However, it’s not a word most of us get to hear, do or even really understand what it means, right?

For me, when I relax, I don’t feel like I’m managing things at work, at home or anywhere…However, my “management style” has now caused the rest of my body to look and feel like something out of “Hunchback of Notre Dame.” (And just in case yours looks the same; it’s not supposed to look that way no matter how long you’ve looked like it.)

Funny enough it’s not always a long day at the spa that can help you to “get right.” Actually it’s amazing what 30 minutes of “felaxing” can do for you and your well being.

Massage Felax specializes in the ancient art of reflexology and other massage modalities including Swedish, Prenatal, Lomi Lomi, Deep Tissue, Sports, Trigger Point and Ashiatsu.

Each reflexologist has been through a rigorous reflexology traning program to ensure proper technique of the 50 reflex points. Whether you’ve got only 30 minutes for a reflexology session at just $29 (lunch break) or you can spare 60 minutes for a $79 massage, Felax creates the comfortable environment you need, but also allows you to be able to work through it (with my mobile phone still in hand for a few email check ins while I was checked out!)

While I ~~enjoyed~~ loved the ample attention to my feet (I always say you have to be good to the things that keep you upright), it’s the ashiatsu (don’t forget the A in that word) that really will take you to a new world. Like a member of Cirque de Soleil, my Massage Felax therapist leaped onto the table I was laying on, grabbed the bars above her head, and began to really work through the pressure I was holding in my back. It was an intense experience, but if you deal with stress in your shoulders, back or neck, you know that the ongoing pain from that is much worse. She worked through my trouble areas and I began to be able to work through mine, too.

Not up for trying things alone, bring a friend and the spouse. Special features such as a couple’s therapy room is available at the Park Cities and Dyer Street locations and oxygen therapy, ashiatsu massage and accommodations for group spa treatments are offered at the Addison venue. If you have the time, it’s totally worth the $85 seventy minute signature combo (reflexology and full body massage) for the complete head-to-toe treatment. And now until May 29, to honor our veterans, Felax is offering a free massage when you call and make an appointment and show your VA card.

This is the happy ending that they really meant for us all to have.

Trinity Forest Adventure Park is an aerial course that has six self-guided courses at three different elevations and four levels of difficulty. The courses become higher and gradually more difficult, and have 8-12 elements (obstacles) each. Each course varies in terms of elevation and the strenuousness of the challenges.

The courses consist of:

Military-style obstacles (cargo nets, wobble bridges, tight ropes, ladders, etc.)
Zip Lines where the participant is in control
Six Courses with varying degrees of difficulty

To participate, an individual must be:

6 years old AND at least 48” tall
Able to grasp a cable 60” above them while flat-footed
And LESS than 265 lbs.

While at this time Mend does not accept any insurance, sometimes comfort, convenience, and customer service are completely worth the very reasonable costs (that are also consistent with what I’ve paid for urgent care out of pocket costs.) Ranging from $199 for the visit to $175 for a complex service, no services are rendered without your consent and are payable with your credit card, Health Savings Account, or Flexible Spending Account.
