It’s a German Christmas at the Texas Christkindl Market

November 21, 2019 By Autumn Rose Reo 15 Comments

There’s tons to do in Dallas and Fort Worth during the holidays. One of our favorites is outdoor fun, culture, and history all in one at the Texas Christkindl Market in Arlington, plus there’s gluhwein. (’nuff said.)

I’m a gal that loves to travel. But with kids in tow and Christmas craziness happening, it’s hard to think there’s time for that. But I found the way to Germany and all you need to do is head to the ballpark (Globe Life Park that is.)

All of these fun events and activities are in my backyard, but if you don’t live in Texas, then you probably only associate Arlington with America’s Team the Dallas Cowboys and Texas Rangers. Did you know it’s home to some of the most magical holiday experiences, too?

Texas Chriskindl Market

You can ooh and ahh at all the floats in the Arlington Holiday Lights Parade and the historical Interlochen Lights or you can enjoy the thrills of Six Flags Over Texas – Holiday in the Park. One of my favorites has to be strolling through Texas Christkindl Market – reminiscent of a German holiday experience.

Texas Christkindl Market, the largest open-air market in the Southwest, is not your typical holiday fair. It’s inspired by German tradition and features holiday gifts, decorations, and of course, German food.  More than 25 vendors are found up and down the market with great giftables like jewelry, ornaments and little German trinkets like cuckoo clocks. Plus, it is the only place in the Southwest where you can find handcrafted gifts and collectibles straight from exclusive Käthe Wohlfahrt merchandise and designs from the iconic Rothenburg ob der Tauber Christmas Village.

This is heaven for shoppers or just people who like to collect festive holiday items, but if shopping isn’t your cup of tea, there’s much more:

SPECIAL EVENTS NOT TO MISS AT THE TEXAS CHRISTKINDL MARKET

Tree Lighting and Opening Ceremonies - Nov. 29 at 7 pm

Kicking off the 2019 Market, the community is invited to welcome the beautiful Christkindl Angel at the Opening Ceremonies on Nov. 29. The angelic namesake of the event, the Christkind opens the market, sharing German holiday traditions and stories. Special guests are invited to join the Angel as she lights up the live 30-ft. Concolor Fir Christkindl Tree, presented by Viridian DFW by Johnson Development, opening the Market for a successful 24 days.

Ice Skating in the North Plaza

Take to the ice with 5,000 sq. ft. of frozen fun produced by Ice Rink Rinks! Take a spin on our outdoor ice skating rink, which will be open through Jan. 12, 2020, and create magical memories with family and friends.

Hours: Open Nov. 29, 2019  – Jan. 12, 2020. After-school hours on weekdays:  4 pm-9 pm; Saturdays and School Holidays: 11 am-10 pm, Sundays: noon- 7 pm.

Tickets: Individual admission for all ages: $16 (includes skate rental). For tickets and information, please visit txchristkindlmarket.com.  For questions regarding group discounts or private skate requests, email txchristkindlmarket@icerinkevents.com.

Warming Haus

Enjoy the comforts of warm, covered seating in the Warming Haus as a cozy place to enjoy eating your gingerbread or catching up with an old friend. The Warming Haus is an ideal destination to warm up by enjoying seasonal beverages including beer, Kinderpunsch and Glühwein in custom-collectible mugs (while supplies last.) After the refreshments, head back to the ice rink for a classic holiday experience with friends and family. For information on hosting private events and meetings, please email info@txchristkindlmarket.com.

Kinder Club

Before heading to see St. Nikolaus, children are invited to write a letter (or download a special template) at the Kinder Club online at: https://www.txchristkindlmarket.com/kinder-club/kids-downloads/. Letters should be dropped at the Warming Haus at the Texas Christkindl Market in Arlington, Texas and put it in the specially marked mailbox to receive a personal response from St. Nikolaus himself (with a little help from the Texas Rangers Women’s Club.)

St. Nikolaus

There’s nothing more legendary than a visit with St. Nikolaus at the Texas Christkindl Market in Arlington! Every child is invited to meet St. Nikolaus to share their special requests and  photography packages may be purchased starting at $19.95.

GE3_2477

After all of the carousel rides and snow fights, you’ll probably work up quite an appetite for some authentic German cuisine – roasting nuts, brats, potato pancakes, funnel cakes and gluhwein / spiced wine (my personal favorite.) And you can enjoy all of this yummy food in the comfort of the Warming Hut or while listening to one of the acts musical acts that are scheduled throughout the market. Just be careful – we don’t need anyone roasting in a warming hut.

10 Reasons to Go to Granbury Texas

June 17, 2016 By Autumn Rose Reo 17 Comments

Need to “get away,” but only have a few hours for a vacation? A quick drive to Granbury Texas and you’ll feel like you’re hundreds of miles away from it all. Need more convincing? Here’s 10 Reasons to Go to Granbury and what makes it so grand.

Thank you to Visit Granbury for partnering with mamachallenge by providing complimentary experiences to many of its great landmarks.

Vacation? What’s that?

With little time to sandwich in a big getaway with the fam or even the hubs, I’ve come to master the art of a 24-hour vacation.

Even with just a few hours at your disposal, you can really get refocused when you walk away from the norm and take a deep breath of fresh air – in somewhere new, different, and unexplored (i.e. somewhere that didn’t have Starbucks or lots of traffic.)

Granbury-Park

With little to spare in traveling time, we jumped in the car just about an hour away to the grand little town of Granbury, Texas.

Granbury Texas

A small-town girl myself, I know that Texas is full of jewels like Granbury…you just have to let your imagination let you roam. And be ok to create a little schedule since you might fall in love with your first stop and not have any time left to explore some of the other fun destinations. Consider this kind of trip, your “Whitman’s Chocolate Sampler,” an opportunity to get a taste of everything in order to come back again (and again) to indulge in your favorites as little or as much as you want.

GranburyDowntown

While I have more than 10 reasons you should plan a visit to Granbury, I’m actually rather selfish, and don’t want to share them all. I feel like it’s my own little piece of paradise and I don’t want everyone taking a piece of it. While I realize Granbury isn’t technically, mine, she did have my heart in just 24 hours.

Granbury-Pillow

1. Eagle Mountain Farmhouse Cheese

Your discovery of Granbury actually should start outside of town in Lipan, about 20 minutes from town.  Founded by the one and only Dave Eagle, Eagle Mountain Farmhouse Cheese is the only the finest hand-made cheeses from the fresh natural Grade A raw milk of the Brown Swiss dairy cows pastured exclusively at Sandy Creek Farm in North Texas. Here you’ll find Gouda style cheeses, Alpine style cheeses, Trappist style cheeses, tomme style cheeses and others that you can purchase to nibble on the way home (I’d suggest two at least – one for now in the car and one to eat when you realize the first wedge is already gone.)

EagleMountain

Award-winning cheese making happens here, but you’ll need to call ahead to get in on classes well in advance (and these are real deal classes, not just an hour or so to touch it and say you made it. This is the kind real cheesemakers do!) And just in case someone moves your cheese, you can get your hands on more at local North Texas farmer’s markets like in Coppell, Texas and some of the finest restaurants in Texas like Ellerbe’s Fine Foods in Fort Worth.

Eagle-Mountain-Cheese

2. Revolver Brewing

One of the reasons Dallasites are flocking fast (say that 10 times fast) to Granbury is in pursuit of Blood and Honey. That is the nectar of the Revolver gods, the brewery that is found right outside of Granbury.

Revolver-Brewing

Each Saturday the gates are opened and you’re invited for just a few hours to take a tour of the brewery, catch some live tunes, let hot sauce drip down your face as you shove in a taco, hang out and of course, redeem your $10 worth of cerveza.  Imagine a family reunion where everyone likes each other, brings good grub and condones drinking. Worth the drive just for the day, but with so much to do, why would you stop just here.

revolver

Don’t miss: Come early to make sure you make the brew tour at 1:30 pm.   Arrive before 2pm and you get four 8oz tastings.  Arrive after 2pm and you get two 8oz tastings. You can still come out and get your brews, but you won’t get to see how it becomes the hard-to-find brew that is tops on everyone’s list.

3. Historic Downtown Square

This is a good place to start your day (and end it) in Granbury.

If you love history, you’ll love just strolling the square to see the store fronts and landmarks.

Love to shop? They have you covered with several shops that display everything from clothes, rare coins and from what we found, even old gun from colonel that had fought in the in a battle (I didn’t catch that part).

Shopping in Granbury

Don’t miss: If you’re lucky, get in on the the second Saturday of the month for Girls Night Out. Many shops on the square keep the oil burning with extended hours to allow you to sip, savor and shop a little longer.

FOOD FUN ON THE SQUARE

Love to drink wine and eat great grub? Granbury doesn’t disappoint. Walking the square, you’ll find homestyle cooking, tea room fare at the name, Italian food at D’Vine Winery, and you can even be transported to Germany only steps from each other.

4. Ketzlers Schnitzel Haus and Biergaten

Hitting up Ketzler’s and the biergarten was a must on our trip to for all the best of the wurst (with traditional bratwurst, smoked bratwurst, wiess wurst and nurnberger with saurkraut and German mustard) and one two three cold Paulaner Oktoberfests under the shade of the trees next to the water fountain. (However, overheard a woman making some delightful noise as she devoured her reuben so it’s a good chance it’s because it was that good too.)

Ketzlers

Since the one that makes it also serves it to you, it’s the kind of place that you pull up a bench and stay awhile (at least until the last bier wears off.)

Ketzlers

5. Eighteen Ninety Marketplace Grill and Lounge

Just a few doors down: go back in time to 1812, a culinary mecca for spices, oils and some epic gluten-free brownie mix. This is where I went crazy. For foodies, this is your playground with flavors found you can’t get anywhere else.

1890

After throwing down my credit card, I discovered the shop was just for starters…there is also pretty hot steak joint that serves as the fancy dining in town. However, blue jeans make the cut as you order the Texas Trilogy. While we had other dinner plans that night, don’t think I’m not calling in advance to make sure I’m on the top of the list for this place so I can sop up some PEI mussels.

Christinas

Don’t miss: On the square inside Christina’s is a beautiful custom built wooden bar. Take it its awesomeness while ordering the sangria selection of the day or at least make it a pit stop as you round that side of the square. And if you have time, you should definitely stay for tea time.

6. Gluten Free in Granbury

With only 24 hours we couldn’t taste everything (especially since we didn’t have time to wait in the line), but we wish we could have. During a bathroom break I did stumble into the old stomping grounds of Billy the Kid and found some pretty epic gluten-free sweets at the Nutshell (for the win!). And don’t miss Farina’s Winery for a family Italian experience complete with gluten-free pizza!

7. Barking Rocks Winery

Always one to hit up the local wine trail wherever I go (Napa, Fredricksburg, Temucula, Grapevine), a drive a dirt road to Barking Rocks was one of my favorite parts of Granbury. After second thinking a few times that we had mistakenly hit up the wrong winding road, we reached the beautiful country oasis.

Barking-Rocks

Insider the barn you’ll find a few tables, a knowledgeable staff, live music (when you’re lucky) and what you need to just forget to check into Facebook (but yes, I did.) Founded by Tiberia and Kristina Bolinger, this winery was started after he finally had enough of corporate America and ready to embrace his Italian heritage of wine making. The barn also serves as the place where the magic happens and then washed away before scooting the tables back to the center of the cement floor.

BarkingRocks

If you can catch it, check out the winery the first Friday of the month. Bring your best potluck and your friends for live music at the winery. Consider yourself lucky if Tobias stops by to join in the fun which often happens.

Oh, the Fizz n’ Rose. With Mourvedre, Roussanne and Chardonnay grapes, which is the ideal patio sipping wine for hot Texas summers with just a little tinge of sweetness and effervescence.   Grab a few bottles (only $17) to take home, but not too many – you’ll want an excuse to return for more.

Wine

Don’t miss: You’ll also find a few other wineries if you want to do a little more wine touring including Pemberton Cellars, BluffDale Vineyards, and D’vine Wine of Granbury (also a great hangout for the locals).  If you really love wine, plan now to visit in April for the annual Granbury Wine Walk.

8. Granbury Ghosts & Legends Tour

No visit to Granbury should be without tickets to the 7 pm or 9:15 pm Ghost Tour. Owned and conducted by mother-daughter team Coletta Henderson and Brandy Her., this tour is a trip down memory lane with tons of history and of course, of much local lore. Kicking off at the Nutt Hotel, you’ll walk through the “darker” parts of Granbury to explore and engage in legends come to life including Audrey and John Wilkes Booth (yep, that one that shot Abe.)

Ghost-Tour

Totally family friendly, we didn’t talk too many scary stories, however, while walking around the square, which was dark by now, some of the lights began flicker during one of the accounts of a ghost that still haunts the area, but apparently that’s not the only thing that has happened on these tours. It’s a great way to end the evening in Granbury.

Granbury-Ghost

9. Inn on Lake Granbury

Ready to hit the hay? You’ll find total relaxation at the Inn on Lake Granbury bed and breakfast resort owned and operated by the most hospitable local couple.

Lake-Granbury

At check in we learned that this was a destination for couples to really enjoy doing nothing and let the culinary talents of “wife’s name” take over during happy hour and breakfast (included in the stay.) The property includes a beautiful pool, picturesque lake view with tons of Pottery Barn-like perfect seating, and lots of activities if you want to just stay put at the Inn (worth a trip to do nothing at all.)

Inn on Lake Granbury

While we didn’t get the opportunity to really revel in the delightful nothingness that many others retreat here for, our time in the Pool House ensured we would return as many of the other couples had recorded in the guest book when they needed to get away or celebrate another momentous occasion.

Lakehouse

10. And here are a few I missed but will be going back to visit:

City Beach Park

This is one that I’m making a point to visit this summer – the beach…in GRANBURY! There’s not a lot of beaches to get to in this neck of the woods, so this was a super surprise, especially if you’re just looking for a few hours in the sun next to the water. The beach park includes a spray park, SUP/volleyball/bicycle concessionaire, kayak rentals in the summer, and thatched roof picnic pavilions available on a first-come, first-served basis. And since it’s close to downtown, you can still add a little time downtown to the start or end of your trip!

Art Galleries and Museums

Combined there are more than 20 museums and art galleries in Granbury. So if you’re into history, art, or just appreciate exploring new things, you can make a whole trip just visiting each of these! While the Veterans Museum was closed while I was there, I was able to snap this shot of the plane near the park, also another stop to enjoy in Granbury.

VetsMuseum

Now you know a few reasons Granbury is so grand. Hopefully you’ll make a stop (or a stay) in the future.

It’s one of those places that makes me proud to call Texas home.

Your New Dream Home is in Fredricksburg at Boot Ranch

September 8, 2015 By Autumn Rose Reo 24 Comments

Disclaimer

Fredricksburg is one of favorite places.

History. Wine Country. Cultural Cuisine. Small Town Hospitality.

Close to all the conveniences of the city, but almost like a world away, just veering out to see where the sky meets the hills is one of those magical moments where time seems to stand still and you can just appreciate mother nature and the current moment of today.

HillCountry

It’s one of those places that you can take a deep breath and just appreciate the handiwork that makes every Texan proud to call this home.

Several months ago I was invited to spend my birthday to “take a break” from everything to stop and smell the peaches (Fredricksburg is world famous for peaches and they smell heavenly.)

As I rolled up the drive way in the blue Cadillac leading up to Boot Ranch, I was taken by the idyllic views of the pink billowy clouds and rolling hills, I was already enraptured, and I hadn’t even driven up to the lobby.

The Boot Ranch community is a 2,052-acre private master-planned community designed to ensure timeless appeal and responsible land stewardship. Featuring Audubon Sanctuary certification, the property is designed to peacefully coexist with the beautiful surrounding landscape and gentle wildlife. Naturally, it also affords our Members spectacular Hill Country views, a premier golf course set within the area’s natural ridges, spring-fed lakes populated with native fish and homesites cradled by nature.

From the estate homesites to overlook cabins and Sunday houses, every aspect of Boot Ranch is designed to embrace the natural terrain while adhering to the highest standards of construction, detail, and design.

Boot Ranch Selects Insperity from Boot Ranch on Vimeo

While we unloaded our things into the beautifully furnished family cabins (available for when family members come to visit you when you live in the community), I couldn’t wait to see what else was waiting. With picturesque paved pathways through the 18-hole Hal Sutton designed championship golf course and a 34-acre golf practice park, even this non-golf-paying fan was ready to pick up a club. But if the views weren’t enough to make you plan the color of your drapes already, the 55,000 sq. ft. members-only clubhouse and village complex, and the 4.5-acre pool and premiere spa will (see slideshow.)

After picking up my chin, the next move on my itinerary included a multicourse wine dinner featuring my favorite friends from Messina Hof with a few new friends. After devouring a venison meal that still gets my mouth watering months later by the gifted Boot Ranch Executive Chef Aaron J. Staudenmaier (previously of Dallas’ own Mansion at Turtle Creek, Abacus, Jasper’s, Rathbun’s Blue Plate Kitchen), we were able to watch the sun go down with a movie in the family room and a hands-down AMAZING bacon popcorn I’m still trying to figure out how to make.

BootRanchDinner

While I could have spent days never leaving the property, we were also able to visit all the fun that Fredricksburg was able to deliver with innovative wineries, historical museums my husband can’t wait to come back to, and super shopping at small boutiques/gift shops. And you can’t miss the dining especially with the German heritage that Fredricksburg is known for.

Fredricksburg

So while one can only wish that staying at Boot Ranch was as easy as making a hotel reservation, the only way you make this dream stay is a “long-term vacation,” by purchasing one of the available properties to build a home at the Boot Ranch or at one of the furnished Sunday houses. Living at Boot Ranch isn’t just your next house it’s a destination for you to call home.

Where’s your dream home?

Tomorrow, March 11, the Texas House Committee on Public Education will hear HB 3. Let’s make it clear: Public money demands public accountability!

Texans have rejected vouchers since 1957—yet lawmakers are once again pushing them through with SB 2 and HB 3.

💰 Vouchers drain public school resources.
📉 They don’t improve student achievement.
❌ They aren’t about "parent choice"—private schools choose their students.
🏫 Texas parents already have school choice.

Governor Abbott is making vouchers a priority, but Texans are pushing back. Lawmakers are feeling the heat from voters who refuse to let public schools be undermined.

📲 Take 1 minute to make your voice heard NOW!

📷Jackson and Taylor are 2 of the 5.5 million reasons why Texas must keep public dollars in public schools. I was a product of public schools and had an amazing experience in a rural community with some of the best teachers. Change needs to happen, but taking away resources like these from schools is not especially when they ste already underfunded and our teachers’ morale is at an all time low. Communities work better together not when you separate them further apart.

🎅 Snow Tubing (always our favorite)Ice Skating (truth: we don’t skate, but it’s perfect people watching)
🎅 Interactive Light up Dance Floor
🎅 @cinemark Theatre with holiday movies
🎅 Coca-Cola Lounge - 21+ Cocktail experience (looked great to go with the girls)
🎅 Santa Landing

And of course, the Eatery! Eyes (and mouths) got big here with featured food from State Fair of Tex winners like The Drowning Tacos (SO GOOD we then ordered the Birria Tacos, too all cooked onsite and with all the sauce!)

It’s the real thing!

WHERE TO CHRISTMAS IN DFW WITH TEENS // Prairie Li WHERE TO CHRISTMAS IN DFW WITH TEENS // Prairie Lights

🎄 Prairie Lights, Lynn Creek Park in Grand Prairie
🗓️ Now through Dec. 31 (NYE) at 6 pm

Christmas wouldn’t be Christmas without @prairielights- with a packed car with blankets, Santa hats, hot cocoa and coffee, and blasting holiday music while we sing them even louder.

A stunning two-mile drive through light park complete with a midway stop - The Holiday Village with carnival rides, amazing bites (corndogs, funnel cakes and more, oh my!) And this year we were surprised with a new light tunnel, reimagined walk-through forest and new displays, great photo opps, gifts, visit with Santa, a lighted strollable forest.  It’s perfectly timed for food, fun and a little time on foot!

PRO TIP: Go early, get tickets in advance and spring for the fast pass on the weekends and prime holiday times. And enjoy it and don’t try to rush it - enjoy it! That includes entry and the experience (so bathroom before you go, but thankfully there’s one at The Holiday Village and you get the corn dog.)

Named after Bangkok’s legendary road of entertainment of all kinds (Sukhumvit Soi 11), it seems fitting this newly imagined destination would find its home in Arlington’s Entertainment District. Anchoring the NEW @loewsarlington, @soycowboytx (also from @bbbutchers / @berghospitality) recently swung open the curtain this summer with an opening that made heads turn at every corner of this 12,000 sq. ft. of sexy space - with 3 unique bars, patio, viewable kitchen and dining room.

To call it a “Pan Asian restaurant” doesn’t do it justice with its rich menu of fresh sushi, dim sum, caviar, truffle, lobster, waygu (all things you don’t find in the home of the margarita machine and ballpark nachos.) And if you’re looking for entertainment, just take a peek into the expansive kitchen and watch your rolls or omakase be made. The cocktail menu is just as extravagant with everything from mezcal to Japanese whisky, you’re eyes will be just as happy as your lips upon your first sip.

While we experienced live music, fashion show and more as part of the opening, the cool smoke installation and the people-watching is definitely just part of the menu at Soy Cowboy you’ll have to explore.

Food Nerd Note: SoyCowboy is on the upcoming @dfwrestaurantweek menu for just $39, so it’s a steal to take your own trip on a budget. (Make your reservation.)

Normally we’re always behind the smartphone camera, today we stepped out in front of the TV screen! The lovely folks at the new morning show Morning on Merit Street @morningonmeritstreet invited DFN for a little “roundtable” discussion about dining trends with our own Food Nerd @autumnreo / @mamachallenge and Bill Trevino of @craftandvinerestaurant CraftandVine along with hosts @dominiquesachse and @fanchonstinger for a little dishin’ on dining!

(If you’re able to take a look online, keep watching to see our new friend Pearl 🐶 and friends from @sweetpearlsicecream share their incredibly sweet story with @hungreehannah!)

✔️ And just like we shared on the show, we want to know what you think! What do you think about Table Limits on reservations? Yes restaurants should have them or no way?
