Turn Back Time – Ways to Keep Your Skin Looking Younger

Last week I made an amazing, yet very SAD discovery.

Mother Nature left a little mark on me in the form of a wrinkle.
I was looking in the rearview window and noticed it and of course, tried to wipe it away. Then after a few minutes I realized it wasn’t going away or could it?

So off I started on my search for the fountain of youth to find out what I could do today to make a difference now and hopefully tomorrow as well.
Starting from the inside out, here’s what I found can help or at least in the words of Cher, “If I could turn back time.”
WATER, WATER ALL AROUND
Water is the answer for almost everything and when it comes to skin there’s nothing better.
Think of a raisin…with water, your skin looks like a grape. Without it, it looks like a raisin. Which one do you want your skin to look like? Most people don’t even drink their recommended water intake. Roughly to find your water intake you want to multiply your weight by 2/3 or 67 percent. If you weight 100 pounds, you need 67 oz water. If you’re 200 pounds, you need around 130 oz. Of course, the environment, your exercise habits, alcoholic intake impacts your intake requirements. Just remember, you need about 2, 2 liters of water a day. Don’t like water or need a little help to drink more? Check out this post on “How to Get your H2O!
YOU ARE WHAT YOU EAT
Veggies and fruit aren’t just good for your diet, but for your skin, too. When it comes to our skin we want to be an ace – meaning we want to make sure we are getting our Vitamins A, C & E.

They contain antioxidants that fight off the free radicals, aka the environmental toxins that’s in the air, in what we eat, and all around us. They also fight off our cancer risk and have several healthy benefits.
TOMATOES contain the antioxidant LYCOPENE which helps your skin cells work at their optimal rate.
Eat at least 1/2 cup of cooked tomatoes a day.
BLUEBERRIES contain the antioxidant POLYPHENOLS, that helps to protect your skin and maintain elasticity and vibrancy. Plus polyphenols also help prevent memory problems.
Eat one or more 1/2-cup servings daily.
KALE contains the antioxidant LUTEIN to help prevent aging and contains iron.
Eat two or more 1/2-cup servings of kale or other greens a day.
RED PEPPERS contains the antioxidant BIOFLAVANOIDS to moisturize and heal the skin.
Eat two or more 1/2-cup servings a day of red peppers, carrots, beets, or similarly colored veggies.
PUT IT ON THICK
The cosmetic and beautycare makes up a multibillion dollar industry and it’s full of products that claim to turn back time. Whatever your price point you need to remember all skin care routines need to really consist of four steps:
1. Clean
2. Exfoliate
3. Moisturize
4. Protect
And you have to make sure to put on the sunscreen! I love SUPERGOOP – it’s sunscreen, anti-aging serum and moisturizer in one.
Some do and some don’t, but these products give you both instant and long-term results just like having a spa at home.

Using a silk or satin pillow instead of a cotton pillow can help fight off sleep induced wrinkles and even keep your hair in check! The fibers in many of them have copper, which is a proven mineral to minimize aging skin. Since cotton absorb moisture, it not only wipes off that moisturizer you just put on, but takes out all the moisture you want your skin to keep while you sleep.
It’s Gonna Be a Bright, Sunshiny day
Want to appear you’ve taken off a few years before you leave for the day? Then wear brighter colors. While I have a closet full of black and it makes me feel thinner, the color actually causes a  harsh contrast in the skin making your skin appear to be more dull and less vibrant. But adding color into your wardrobe, it appears you have a more youthful look. Even if it’s a necklace, cardigan or scarf, a small change can make a big difference in looking younger! Also by changing up those accessories to more trendier pieces, you can make that black dress you’ve been wearing for 10 years and your skin look runway ready.
Say goodbye to wrinkled skin!

How Mother’s Day is Made at The Shops at Park Lane with No Shopping at All

Disclaimer: I was part of a tour to check out The Shops at Park Lane. So glad they did since I’d never been. That’ll change now. See why below.

I have a confession…I don’t like to shop.

Well, let me rephrase, I just don’t think of it as something fun, but work. Hard work, but someone has to do it.

On Mother’s Day, shopping it’s not exactly my idea of how I want to spend my day, but instead, relaxing and enjoying myself while I do little to nothing at all.

So the thought of going to The Shops of Parks Lane may not be the first place I’d suggest to spend Mother’s Day, but after a recent trip, I’m pleasantly surprised!

Actually, I was flat out wrong.

In just three hours, all the woes and drama of my day had dissipated and I was, for at least a moment, without a care in the world. At a shopping center.

Right…?

So what did I do that was so dang enjoyable that it changed my life that day in a little bit of time and only around $50?

Photo from The Shops at Park Lane website

I got my hair washed, dryed and style at the Aveda Institute of Dallas for one. And in beautiful Aveda fashion, the amazing aromatherapy started at the door and led me to a comfortable chair with a lovely woman who instantly whisked me away to a place of peace with a light neck rubdown to relax me before we started the wash & dry. Then during the wash, my hands were given the same love and attention with a massage.

“I’m in Heaven…” and I didn’t even have my beautiful hair done yet, but it was perfect, anyways.

For a moment I heard the music you hear in the commercials and I twirled my hair around in such the way you see Eva Mendes does in her Pantene commercials.

After my relaxing hour at Aveda for less than $20 (yes, less than $20), I was off to give a little love to my very sad nails. Normally, I just have them buffed, but this time I wanted a little something extra and the lovely ladies at L’acqua Nail Spa Lounge were able to give me an express gel manicure.

In 30 minutes my nails were picture perfect. If I had only had a few more hours to spend for a pedicure, facial and massages. But the Mother’s Day packages now available are affordably priced for a second-trip to the lovely nail boutique known for the working women’s mecca for getting ladies in and our during their lunch hour!

MOTHER’S DAY SPA PACKAGES

So what’s a girl to do when she’s had her nails and hair done and no where to go? This one went to the Sleep Number store! Considering I’d always wanted to lay down on one and and find my sleep number, without kids and a few minutes to spare I went on in and laid down.

I was in heaven again. No hearing any crying, no kids screaming, no iPhone ringing, and just comfort.

I found out all kinds of stuff behind the Sleep Number bed and that a new app can even measure how you slept and how to make it your sleep time count. Considering the grossness of having two children sleep, eat and jump on your bed, I can confidently say that my bed is not in tip-top shape. And my back and sciatic nerve can concur.

While I couldn’t put a Sleep Number bed in the back of the car, a girl can definitely plan for a future purchase, right?

So after three hours of nothing but pure relaxation, I went to a shopping center and didn’t shop one bit. But I’ll admit, I eyed a few places I wanted to check out. And a few more to eat at…

I’ll be back. Especially for that $18 blowdry. And you or your mom will too.
Happy Mom’s Day!

Real Moms Talk About Real Body Issues

Mom makeover.

Tummy tuck.

Liposuction.

The list goes on of all the things I know I’ve considered in efforts to have a body I could be proud of.  Heck I’ve asked for them for anniversary gifts. However, as a mom of a little girl, it’s hard to say in one hand “fix it” and another hand, “be proud of it.”

And especially in Big D, home of more plastic surgery than any other place except LA, I thought this was a pretty big conversation.

So what do you think of these stats from RealSelf? Especially after this blogger was asked her for a photo with a shirt on as part of her feature in Shape magazine after her weight loss left her less midsection less than airbrushed.

So it’s time to weigh in…(well not really, but I want to hear your thoughts!)

Put Some Color in Your Life with the COLOR FUN FEST 5K, April 19 in McKinney

I hate to run.

A lot.

But it sure does help to burn calories.

However, I still need something to get me excited enough to move my hiney. Thankfully, runs are getting creative so people like me that don’t like to run still want to get involved and enjoy the fun.
In the words of Julia Roberts: Well then color me happy!
The COLOR FUN FEST 5K comes to North Dallas/McKinney on April 19, 2014. Both a day and night  5k color run featuring finish-line festivals, the goal of the Color Run is to combine fun and fitness while helping local charities!
COLOR FUN FEST 5K is an EPIC color fun run that heightens positive emotions by combining a5k fun run with the energy of electronic dance music, all while coloring the crowd with thousands of pounds of vibrant colored powder. The event is family-friendly, and features a post-run celebration with DJ entertainment.

The charities the run benefits Free Arts for Abused Children, a nonprofit organization that gives children that have suffered adversity a chance to express themselves through art. Another nonprofit that benefits from this event is a new startup charity called Flight for Cystic Fibrosis that gives children with CF a chance to feel alive by experiencing the incredible feeling of skydiving through wind tunnels and jumps. The mission of this program is to show these kids how to overcome fears and feel hope, bonding families and encouraging healthy living, which is vitally necessary for a person with Cystic Fibrosis.

And this run is one the whole family can get involved in including kids/parents, couples, groups of friends, fitness gurus, dance enthusiasts, runners, joggers, walkers, bloggers, couch potatoes, the young, the old, and basically everyone and anyone that likes to have fun!
