Just in time for National Donut Day, we’re sharing fantastic facts about donuts. Paired with your free donut from Dunkin Donuts, it’s going to be the sweetest day.

Consider this my ode to the donut. Or is it doughnut… and what in the world is a cronut?

Whatever it is we all can agree it’s good however you order it – glazed, powered, filled or sprinkled. So on this blessed holiday from the food gods (there’s one for everything, right), we have 10 factoids to give homage to the all-American (or not) donut.

1. Is it doughnut or donut?

Actually they are both right. So for all intensive purposes, I choose to smell it the shortest way possible.

2. Who do we thank for the donut?

That could also be out for discussion…This delectably simple treat that has spanned the ages and has been giving our taste buds a run for their money as early as the 19th century from Dutch-U.S. immigrants calling the pastry an oliekoek (a Dutch word literally meaning “oil cake”.) However, some historians give the title to “settlers from the English county of Hertfordshire, who brought with them recipes for yeast-raised “Hertfordshire Nuts.” However, the donut historian Michael Krondl gives evidence it could have been even earlier than that.

3. If there’s no nut, where did the “nut” come from?

That all depending on your preferential historical background of the donut. However, stories say the first “donuts” didn’t have holes and resembled more of a walnut shape, hence the name “dough” NUTS.

4. How did the holes came to be?

It’s all in the cooking…Legends say that the trend of donuts with holes came to be only because it made it easier to cook evenly.

5. How much do we like donuts?

We like ’em a lot. 10 billion donuts are consumed in the US every year.

And it shows. There are more than 11,300 Dunkin’ Donuts restaurants worldwide – more than 8,000 Dunkin’ Donuts restaurants in 41 states in the U.S. plus the District of Columbia, and more than 3,200 international restaurants in 36 countries.

Okay – this is technically six…but I’m on a roll…

6. Why is there a National Donut Day?

While it’s just a good reason to eat donuts, this “holey” holiday has been around since 1938 from The Salvation Army as a fundraiser to honor the special volunteers sometimes called “Doughnut Girls” during WWI, who helped boost soldiers’ morale with the confection.

So in actuality it’s un-American NOT to celebrate National Donut Day! And Dunkin Donuts wants to help you celebrate!

National Donut Day is Friday, June 5, 2020 and Dunkin’ Donuts is giving Dallas – Fort Worth guests a free classic donut of their choice (while supplies last) with the purchase of any beverage. The offer is good all day on June 5 at participating Dunkin’ Donuts restaurants nationwide.

National Donut Day is Friday, June 2, and Dunkin’ Donuts is ringing in the day in a most delicious, delightful and delectable way, offering guests in the Dallas – Fort Worth area a free donut of their choice (while supplies last) with the purchase of any beverage. The offer is good all day on June 2 at participating Dunkin’ Donuts restaurants nationwide.

To make the day even sweeter, at 10:00 a.m. on June 2, Dunkin’ will deliver 60 dozen donuts to the Dallas Police Department headquarters at 1400 S. Lamar Street, Dallas, to be distributed to all substations. Dunkin’ is proud to support law enforcement and is making sure the officers have the opportunity to participate in the free donut offer. National Donut Day was originally established in 1938 by the Chicago Salvation Army to honor women who served donuts to soldiers during World War I.
